Hahnemann warns Wayne

Wednesday 26th August 2009, 11:29AM BST.

WOLVES V SWINDON 13 GD 25Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann has warned Wayne Hennessey he is gunning for his No 1 spot after making his full debut last night.

The 37-year-old kept a clean sheet in open play, as the home side battled to an extra-time 6-5 penalty shoot-out win over Swindon in the Carling Cup second round.

Signed from Reading in the summer, the American veteran has had to wait for his chance, with Hennessey rested ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit of Hull.

The Wales international has cemented himself as first choice in the first three league games of the season, but his rivals for the jersey are waiting in the wings should the situation change.

And with fit-again Carl Ikeme on the bench last night and long-term injury victim Matt Murray back in training, competition will only get fiercer as the campaign wears on.

Now Hahnemann – who has the significant top-flight experience boss Mick McCarthy craves in a player – has warned Hennessey he’s in for a tough ride.

The USA international said: “I don’t want to sit on the bench, I want to play and I told Wayne that right when I came here.

“But he’s got the No 1 shirt right now, so I have got to push on and fight for his place.

“Carl wants to play and Matt will want to play when he comes back, so that is what the competition brings.

“We are all ready to take that chance if we get it.”

Hahnemann has also been impressed with seeing Murray in training first-hand, as the club’s longest-serving player bids to end years of injury hell with a return to action.

The two know each other from years of lining up on opposite sides in the Championship, the former England Under-21 international with Wolves and his counterpart over seven years at Reading.

Though the two will no doubt wrestle for position when Murray returns but Hahnemann is relishing the challenge.

He said: “Matt is very good and is a super guy to boot. We have got four really good goalkeepers here.”

Hahnemann was delighted to have his first competitive test last night, albeit against League One opposition.

He added: “You can play in the reserves and pre-season friendlies, but it’s just not the same as playing a real game.”

Better distribution of the ball to speed up the play than Wayne, but not impressed with his penalty stoping ability, along with his desire to be a right back and taking out the swindon player….time will tell

Agreed. His quick release and distribution provided a great platform for a counter attack. Also controlled his box better than Henessey.

However, once fully fit I still believe Matt murray is one of the best keepers I’ve seen and should be our no. 1!

Great news to hear Big Matt is back in training… Just hope he takes his time this time and makes sure he is ‘fully fit’ before he plays… As for last night, it’s hard to read too much into it. Marcus was Ok i suppose, Elokobi and Zubar impressed also… Just can’t wait till all players are back fit, with hopefully a couple of supprises over the next couple of days…
If no further signings come, think we’ve had the wool pulled over our eyes a little, just hope the boys can pull togther until January, and if we are in a good position then, get a few players in the cement our place in the promised land…

    Mature performance,showed experience, regarding
penalty saves. you cannot base a season on a few penalties. Regarding Matt Murray, i think the
injuries are overtaking games played, and very
sadly it might be time to bite the bullet?

God there are some muppets on here, do you honestly think there is nothing else being done behind the scenes to strengthen the squad. If certain players hadn’t been unfortunately injured we would be stronger, you can’t blame MMM for that.
Why the negativity we are doing as well as expected, the important thing is to beat the teams that will be around us at the end, I don’t expect West Ham and Man City to be, and we beat Wigan point taken. Hull is a big match.

Nice to hear that there is healthy competition in some areas. Pleased with his signing and will keep Wayne on his toes. Would love to have Matt back playing but just can’t see it happening. Good luck to the big fella!

Its weird how little football Murray has played over the last few years and yet some people are convinced he is one of the best keepers in the country. He has potential but the odds of him fulfilling it are not looking great. He is not one of the best keepers in the country as he has hardly kicked a ball in anger for years……………

Marcus Hahnemann is a better and experinced keeper he can read the game much more ,command his box, releases the ball quicker and a better kick he needs, aswell as the other keepers, get to talk and get his defence organised ,saying that hahneman can teach the other keepers more then the so called keeping coach.

    10. Darth – very much in agreement, good in his time but we have to face facts we need to spend time and money on up and coming players and not those who have been plagued with injuries – harsh but true

I would love to see a fully fit and on in form Murray back but,I must admit I have doubts about his injuries time after time. When he is injured it always seems to be a long time for him to recover.I cetainly hope all that is behind him and wish him the best of luck for the furure. As far as keepers Hahnemann is the man for now,Henessey needs to be taught how to command his area better, and Ikeme just wants more experience.Just a thought for you Mick, albeit a mite ambitious, but,Dunne,Pavlyunchenco,Distin.Wow ,sorry I got carried away with ambition again, you should try it Mick.

Who agrees with this? We need james harper, niko kranjcar and jay simpson. The later one on loan or instead maybe a double swoop at boro for tuncay and johnson then i believe a 10th place finish is reachable! Anyway saturday 3 points is a must a 3 1 win i think with the team been:
    Hahnemann
    Foley
    Zubar
    Mancienne
    Elokobi
    Halford
    Henry
    Milijas
    Keogh
    Doyle
    Seb

And then our dream team could be:
    Murray
    Foley
    Mancienne
    Zubar
    Elokobi
    Kightly
    Miljas
    Kranjcar
    Johsnon
    Doyle
    Tuncay

    Subs:
    Hahnemann
    Stearman
    Henry
    Jarvis
    Harper
    Keogh
    SEB.

dont think we’ve got any problems in the goal keeping department but mick must surely looking to strengthen the central midfield position and also some cover on the wings harper have not seen enough of him,but carlos edwards is now fully fit and has looked useful, wont raise my ambition any higher as i dont like being let down. do like suprises though

Let us not forget how well Carl Ikeme played when Wayne was out last season. I think he can become number 1.
