The Public prepares to open doors

Tuesday 25th August 2009, 10:30PM BST.

thepublicFinal preparations are under way at Black Country arts centre The Public as it gets ready to open its gallery to visitors this weekend.

Plans for the future financing of the £67 million venue are also set to be discussed at a meeting behind closed doors tomorrow.

An extraordinary meeting of Sandwell Council’s cabinet has been arranged to look at future management, and is expected to include a discussion of running costs.

Councillor Steve Eling, finance boss at the council, said he is confident that Sandwell Arts Trust, which is taking over the management of the building, will not be asking for any more cash.

He said: “The meeting has been called as we are keen to get everything signed over by the end of the month, when the arts trust will take over entirely. We will discuss funding arrangements with the leisure trust. There is no suggestion that they will be asking for any more money.

“Everything will be dealt with within existing budgets.”

The interactive gallery will be open to the public for just three days a week following its grand opening on Saturday.

It will be open between 10am and 6pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to the public with tours for schools and community groups on Wednesday and Thursday. The rest of the time it will be closed.

Interactive exhibits have also been modified to slash tens of thousands of pounds from running costs. Some of the hi-tech exhibits will not be on show and other artworks will no longer be electronically connected.

Under the original plans guests were to be issued with a radio controlled “tag” on entering , which stored images from exhibits to produce an individual artwork at the end of the experience.

Bosses have now scrapped those plans, which they described as “phenomenally expensive”. The gallery was due to go live when the rest of the building opened in June last year, but technical problems kept it closed.

Public Gallery Limited, the company charged with running the gallery part of the development, went into administration early this year.

The local authority took over the management of the building and has worked with Sandwell Leisure Trust to form the new company Sandwell Arts Trust which will run the centre.

The gallery, which is now free, will open to the general public at 10am on Saturday.

Linda Saunders, the new general manager at The Public, said: “There has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to get the gallery ready to open.

“Everything is now up and running and we are hoping as many people as possible will come to visit us to experience what the new gallery has to offer.

“We are all looking forward to our opening weekend.”

It should be a good day on Saturday – a Michael jackson ‘tribute’ day with a lot of local performers. Whilst the Jackson tribute thing may not be every ones cup of tea the idea of local people joining in is what the pUBLIC should be about.

A waste of money – but no doubt an ego satisfying carbuncle of a project for our councillors

    Then

It will be open between 10am and 6pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to the public with tours for schools and community groups on Wednesday and Thursday. THE REST OF THE TIME IT WILL BE CLOSED.
