Shoot-out win puts Wolves through

Tuesday 25th August 2009, 10:00PM BST.

WOLVES V SWINDON 2 GD 25Wolves go through to the next round of the Carling Cup in a 6-5 penalty shoot-out win after a goalless 120 minutes at Molineux.

Gordon Greer hit the post for Swindon from the spot to put the home side through, after Neill Collins had converted the first sudden-death spot-kick to preserve the perfect record.

It was the only way to separate the two sides aftera drawn-out affair, although sub Andy Keogh nearly won it for the Premier League club in stoppage-time but his lob over advancing goalkeeper David Lucas cleared the bar as well.

And the League One visitors gave their opponents some hairy moments over the 90 minutes, not least when winger Anthony McNamee turned inside Collins outside the box with his right-footed effort bouncing off the top of the crossbar.

Billy Paynter then had a goal chalked out for offside before the break.

Swindon sub Mark Marshall also struck the outside of debut goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann’s near post with nine minutes to go.

But penalties it was, with Andrew Surman, David Jones, David Edwards, Keogh, Sam Vokes and Collins converting to put Wolves into Saturday’s third round draw.

    JIWAL

So that’s one goal in four games with ALL of our strikers,(Iwelumo excepted), now featured in one way or another.Simply not good enough , and if we draw another blank on Saturday it will be time to spend some money on a decent striker. Vokes isn’t ready yet, SEB is NOT PL standard, and teh jury is out on Doyle. If we don;t score goals, we can’t rely on the defence to keep them out. Forget winning 6-5 on penalties, it was a rubbish performance, against a poor team, and we still couldn;t score.Morgan, Moxey…sort it before the end of the month.January is too far away.

Why you being negative for JIWAL??

Don’t matter how many goals we score, we’ve got 3 points on the table, and as long as we keep grabbing points it doesn’t matter. Keogh has been unlucky not to score more. He hit the cross bar twice on Saturday, when in other games they would have flew into the top corner, and when Jarvis had that top corner shot saved by Given, not every keeper would have been able to have made that save. Don’t forget that we’ve been playing with a lone-striker, Keogh and he’s not a natural goalscorer. Ebanks-Blake scored 25 goals last season and you can’t say he won’t cut it after one bad game, where he was already clearly injured against West Ham. SEB will cut it in the Premier League and will score goals for us, he’s got all the attributes. Doyle is proven in the Premier League, and he’s only just came back from injury. He looked impressive against Man City, and he’s back against Hull and he’ll score goals aswell. Then the rest of the team, such as Jarvis/Surman, Milijas, Kites when fit/Halford will have to all chip in aswell. Our defence hasn’t looked too bad – don’t even think Craddock is out of his depth from what I’ve seen so far and I’ve been to every game so far and did last season aswell. Stop the negativity and see what happens against Hull.

And don’t judge anything about tonights performance. Was a second string team, and only Keogh and Doyle were the first team players who started, and they weren’t going to over do themselves we’re they when we’ve got Hull on Saturday. We had chances, and if it was a competitive game we would have scored them. Take the positives out of tonight. Berra looked decent, Zubar looked really good, and we set up chances and proven that we can take penalties. Don’t worry, once everyone’s fit we’ll stop up I think, if this is our squad…

    ————— Hennessey —————
    Foley — Mancienne —– Zubar — Elokobi
    Kightly — Henry —— Milijas — Surman
    —– Doyle ————- Ebanks-Blake –

With Hahnemann, Halford, Craddock, S.Ward, Jones, Jarvis and Keogh as bench players.

Still think we need another CDM for cover and competition with Karl Henry. Henry’s been amazing so far, but there’s always an injury risk, as proven so far, and we need another prolific striker, then I think we’re done :)

I was at the game, total and utter rubbish, and the Wolves Management should be embarrassed at their teams performance against ordinary division 1 Swindon, in fact the loyal Wolves supporters should have had their money refunded.
We are desperate for a goal scorer, surely this proves what everyone has been saying for months is correct, one goal in four games is, or should be, of major concern to Wolves, and we only have a couple of days to fix this problem.
The match against Hull at home is a must win for Wolves, but after tonights performance with six of our first team involved, including our 6.5 million mistake, Kevin Doyle, we are going to face defeat unless we establish a reliable ‘focal point’ as a striker, who can score goals.

Very poor performance – demonstrated that some of our fringe players are not up to the task.

The lack of strength in depth was shown by the fact that Mick played someone at right back who had clearly never played the game of football before, as they seemed incapable of controlling the ball or not kicking it straight out of play all of the time.

While I agree with JIWAL on alot of things I think he is wide of the mark here.Doyle needs to get a few more games before he is fully fit and I think he and SEB will be good enough especially when Keightly gets back.Went last night and IMO the likes of Collins ,Jones ,Vokes gave the impression they didnt want to be on the pitch :shameful.I cant remember Collins passing to one of our players.

    Wolves were dreadful.

Players before hand were saying this is their chance to shine and push for the first team but apart from Mendez-Liang not one of them could be bothered, Doyle looks like he needs a good few games has he couldn’t get past the last man and lacked a lot of pace. I also noticed that Berra is terrible at heading the ball.

My one major concern is injuries because

    3. Keogh was on the bench by the way.

Surely one goal in 4 games is a worry to everyone. I can remember Mick’s last game in charge for Sunderland, it was away to Man City and on Sky.Sunderland played really well for the first half but players like Stead could not score. They hit the post and had a few go just wide, Man City caught them on the break and in the end won easily.Has Mick lean’t anything from this? We know money is in the bank, and Mick should be knocking on the door demanding we sign a quality forward in the next 5 days. This guy Castillo by the way played in 11 and scored none for Everton last year in the Prem. Ultimately there are no prizes for valiant efforts in the Prem. Can anyone tell me of any side in the last 20 years who have established themselves in the top flight without spending real money. No excuses this time,5 days to go.

No.4 – I think you are taking a rather narrow view. While not alway’s agreeing with MM’s decisions, on this occasion he was spot on. The first team needed resting and the second team need the experience of ‘first’ team football if they are to gel effectively and be up to scratch when they are required. There were some promising moments and we won. Stop moaning and offer some encouragement.

Some negative comments again I see! We were never going to put out a first team tonight and yes I agree the perfomance was off the mark. But to start whingeing about Mick and calling Doyle a 6.5 million pound mistake is a joke! Swindon gave a good performance and did the usual ‘raising their game’ display that leeser teams always seem to do when they visit Molineux. I have to say that their supporters put us to shame too! Its early days and I have complete faith that we will still be in the Premier League next season. Keep the faith! Highlight of the night was when the ref fell over! Says it all really!

A few people are defending the team by using the excuse, this was not our first team. There is no need for that excuse, even if it was our first team, we would never of played with the intensity and urgency that you will find us playing at in the league.

Mick Mccarthy would of been viewing this game, as a chance to get match fitness and sharpness. The fact that we got through to the next round is an added bonus as it will give him another chance at a later date to do the same thing.

The people who are copmplaining about our football obviously dont realise that the same thing will happen to the majority of premier league teams, as the focus will be on more pressing matters like the premier league.

Ive seen to many “Big Guns” come and go from Wolves in my 13 years as a season ticket holder. Pay days for players that make as much effort in one season as a Keogh does in training.

McCarthy has given the shirt to those that got us here, and rightly so. You should chip off to Blues. They’re bringing in the “Big Guns”. Millions on players that dont understand the club, didn’t get their club there, and are doubtless disrupting the balance of their teams pay structure, make up and therefore morale.

Considering the 3 clowns he was paired with in defence, he hardly put a foot wrong, looked pacey, and misjudged one header in the whole game-winning every other header! For a guy who can hardly speak english at the moment, he looked a class act. 38-frank wolvo, how can you criticise the guy, and even criticising hannemann? what did he do wrong? he set up some great counter attacks with some good throwing, his kicking was good, he claimed every cross he came for, and didnt have a save to make!
Have to agree with the concerns about the defence though. hill is a cart-horse and was poor in the championship, collins was abysmal on tuesday, and as for berra, i still fail to believe the sum we paid for him! But at least Craddock is looking good, and we know mancienne is a class act.
