O’Neill’s rounds on Villa’s critics
Tuesday 25th August 2009, 11:00AM BST.
Villa boss Martin O’Neill rounded on his critics after his team came roaring out of their slump by flooring Liverpool at Anfield.
The 3-1 victory ended a 31-match unbeaten run in the Reds’ home fortress last night and dramatically reversed a Villa decline stretching back to mid-February.
O’Neill’s men had won only two of an 18-game sequence since, then watched their European and domestic hopes slide before losing key figures Gareth Barry and Martin Laursen in the summer.
When another summer of muted transfer business was followed by an opening-day defeat by Wigan, O’Neill came under fire for the first time in his three years at the club while his players were booed from the pitch.
The Anfield effort was easily Villa’s best result since victory over Arsenal at the Emirates last November, giving O’Neill the chance to round on those who have questioned his progress.
He said: “I’m staggered, really, by what is going on. For us to get the abuse we got at half-time against Wigan, which I just don’t think was warranted 45 minutes into a game.
“It’s interesting – we won a pre-season tournament in Spain against some very big teams but OK, I accept doesn’t mean a lot to some people.
“But this is a very daunting league in which teams have spent an awful lot of money, making it even more difficult for everyone.
“To be booed off at the end against Wigan I can accept – people pay their money, they can go for it if they want.
“But we have a group of young players who are still learning this game but who are quality. ”
There’s no respite for Villa with Thursday’s Europa home clash against Rapid Vienna, when they attempt to overhaul a 1-0 deficit, already in sight.
Villa are in talks with Blackburn to recruit defender Steven Warnock, but fear Everton may snaffle Portsmouth’s now want-away centre-half Sylvain Distin.

staggered?
really?
you think complaining about a small squad all season then losing your best two players, not replacing them and continuing to play people out of position to suit your ridiculous tactics and then the fans giving you grief for it is staggering?
well buckle up O’Neill things are gonna get tougher for you unless you buck your ideas up.
last night papered over the cracks but you are going to have to pull a rabbit out of somewhere to convince anyone you have the tactical nouse to be a premiership manager based on the past 3 years of inexpliacble lack of tactics and luck.

i find it amazing that people are jumping on MON and the teams back after 1 bad game ,
last season has gone, we had a bad end to the season but still finished 6th, which is a lot higher than some people thought last summer ,they would be the same people who are over reacting now . we had a good pre season and a good win over a title contender yet some people aren’t happy
for some reason the last couple of years every body(not just us villa fans) have become so reactionary there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground or common sense.
if you loose you should be sacked ,if you win your going to win the league ?
IMO booing does nothing but puts the players under more pressure which isn’t going to help any one

Great result , well done .
However “Villa” still need three quality players to increase the squad size .

Need a good centre-half, midfielder and quality striker and for players to play in THEIR positions.

Your views actually stagger me. You’ve just beaten one of the best teams in the world away from home, scoring 3 in the process and the first thing you do is yet again knock the manager! I would love it if MON walked out on you lot now and you got another O’leary in, then I think you’d realise just how lucky you are and what a real lack of tactics is all about.
Think back to what your team looked like and how they performed before MON took over…

We got to 3rd in January by playing 4-5-1. we were doing well in Europe too at the time. Then (after buying Heskey)MON suddenly switched to 4-4-2 and we were awful and won just 2 games in the rest of the season.
Despite that, in the first match this season MON persisted with 4-4-2 and we made Wigan look like Brazil and us like relegation candidates. Thats why everybody was getting restless.
Then against Liverpool MON at last brought Reo Coker back to centre midfield and played 4-5-1 for the first time since January and just look what happened!!!
