Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Kasabian swagger at the Civic
Tuesday 25th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.

“So did you miss us at the V Festival?” Tom Meighan asked the sold-out Civic, prompting the city’s biggest collective ‘Yesss’ since Wolves won promotion.
And for anyone who suffered Oasis’ grudging and soulless set at Weston Park, this was the perfect antidote.
From the minute Meighan swaggered on stage – newly-trimmed and looking like a slicked-up Russell Crowe – he banished any doubts that a recent swine flu scare had dimmed his innate likeability and raucous stage presence. “Yes, I’m alive,” he beamed.
Epic opener Underdog set the standard and, having mastered the ‘difficult third album’ syndrome with ease, Kasabian were able to cherry pick a catalogue now unrivalled by any band since The Stone Roses.
Cue big stomping anthems, almost all of which turned into sing-along, clap-along fan-fests with the whole venue joining in, except the security staff, who bottled their big moment, to pantomime boos from everyone else.
The set was faultless, with ‘Where did all the love go’ and ‘Fire’ raising the bar ever higher. Time, sadly, flew past. So much so that when Club Foot kicked in, it still felt like the middle order.
In fact it was the set-closer, giving way to a storming encore of Stuntman, followed by a reprise of their Glastonbury showpiece as Candi Staton’s ‘You got the love’ bled seamlessly into a memorably rousing LSF.
As the band left a sea of smiling faces in their wake, Meighan shouted above the cheers: “We want you to make us the most important band in Britain.”
On this form, they already are.

They were great, but, not as good as last year. Support was dire, and the sound wasn’t quite right, perhaps the reason they were still sound-checking when the doors opened.
The set was spot-on, but I felt short at just over an hour and twenty minutes, but saying that Tom didn’t seem himself and still suffering from the effects of his flu. Tonight will be even better (I hope).
I have to comment on the cheek of trying to sell Tour shirts with dates on. These gigs were originally due to be held in June, but moved, yet they are still trying to sell shirts with May dates on the back (Wolves date not even included). This really is trying it on!

I have been to nigh-on 20 gigs in the past 12 months, including seeing Kasabian twice… Last night was THE BEST PERFORMANCE & ATMOSPHERE I have ever seen – by a country mile! The crowd were amazing – especially the ones “bonnet-surfing” on passing cars outside and standing on top of phone boxes still singing!!
Just quite simply – EXCELLENT!
Well done Wolverhampton – with Kasabian, Ian Brown and the Wolves playing at home last night – I thought there would have been a riot!! It just proves that it only turns into a riot when there are hundreds of police around!

They rocked! Tom looked more himself on Tuesday and sounded better. Prefer the long hair though Tom. Support were awful, Kasabian usually have decent support, i.e. The Fratellis and The Music. Every song was superb but I also feel that they should have played longer than 1 hour 20.

Always good to see them live but Mon night was the weakest performance I’ve been to, especially compared to their performance at the Civic last August. And have to agree with Glenn, the sound was terrible especially for the first four songs… really let them down I think.
