Albion Blog – Positive Mental Attitude

Tuesday 25th August 2009, 9:10AM BST.

ALBION 5 SL SL 22Albion blogger Jarrod Hill is gushing in the wake of three league wins on the spin for the Baggies under new stewardship in Roberto Di Matteo.

After dining on the bread and butter win of the previous Saturday game at Nottingham Forest, our late kick-off win over Ipswich at the Hawthorns was a tea-time feast.

To a man we were superb, and it was fantastic to see Robert Koren’s form return after being moved from playing out wide to playing in his preferred role in the middle.

Our former skipper Jonathan Greening’s move to Fulham has provided a straight fight between Koren and Dorrans for the attacking central midfield role when we play 4-4-2,.

On Saturday, ‘Rokko’ staked his claim in emphatic style. My blog on Friday stated my hope that our silver lining of Greenings departure could be the return of the energetic, free-scoring Koren into the centre of midfield and he duly obliged.

His partnership with another Man of the Match contender in Youssouf Mulumbu worked so well, they looked like they had been playing together for many years.

My only minor complaint would be that the 2-0 score line doesn’t reflect our dominance in a game we could have easily bagged four or five goals. Luke Moore missed a penalty and, although it wasn’t the greatest spot kick ever witnessed, Ipswich can thank their goalkeeper Richard Wright for preventing a goal fest.

Young Chris Wood looks to be getting better with every game and his intelligent play belies his tender years. At the back we managed another clean sheet and, similar to Moore and Chris Wood, central defenders Jonas Olsson and Shelton Martis are developing their understanding of each others game.

The great manager Brian Clough highlighted the importance of partnerships throughout a team. Centre-halves, central midfield, strikers, full-backs, wingers, they all constitute partnerships and we seem to have a few which are blossoming under our new manager Roberto Di Matteo.

And when can I stop calling him new? Wow this really is a positive blog!

On top of all this we still have some excellent players to return to the fold. Neil Clement, Ishamel Miller, Roman Bednar and James Morrison are all recovering from injury and suspension.

Hopefully Bednar and particularly Morrison will be back soon and I am simply drooling of adding their quality to a team already in the ascendency.

Plus there is more positivity – we are still looking to strengthen the squad before the closure of the transfer window. The rumours circulating presently are mainly defenders and, as much as I would welcome additional quality in that department, I am hoping we have another striker arrive through our doors.

We do not lack numbers up front but we do lack experience. Not that I do not rate Moore, Wood, Bednar, Rueben Reid and Simon Cox, as I believe they will all have something to contribute this season, but I would prefer us to have another experienced front-man.

Wood, Cox and Reid are rookies at this level and I simply do not rate Craig Beattie, so an experienced striker in the mould of what we had in Kevin Phillips would complete a squad capable of achieving promotion.

But if we include the injured Miller we currently have seven strikers at the club, and I am sure Mr Peace would want an exit from that department before another arrival. Maybe Beattie?

Onto tomorrow night’s Carling Cup game at home to Rotherham and the Millers will be looking to get themselves a scalp, so we must be on our toes. We certainly do not want a replay due to our already congested fixture list and Roberto has already stated his desire for a cup run.

It represents a perfect opportunity for some of our fringe players to remind us of their capabilities, so I am hoping to see the likes of Felipe Texeira, Bednar and veteran goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

And I hope I have provided you all with a nice positive blog to go with a superb performance from the boys on Saturday, the truth is if we play that well all season few teams will be able to live with us.

Long may it continue.

P.S: I have Jarrod ‘Bomber’ Hill locked in my cellar and, until he begins to look at things in a more positive manner, I will continue to write these blogs for him under his name.

Don’t be alarmed – I have provided him with food and essentials. He has a 1983 Shoot annual, a Buckaroo – slightly damaged, missing an ear – and a hard back version of Britain’s Ten Most Beautiful Walks.

He also managed to find an old Linda Lusardi calendar down there but I have confiscated it.

To the kidnapper of “our” Bomber……

Can I have the Linda Lusardi calender in exchange for not reporting him missing!!!!!! lol

I agree with the blog, although it is not so tippy tappy of our ex managers style what we are playing at the moment is entertaining whilst actually defending (now thats a novelty)

I had forgotten about Mozza has to come back its looking better and better . Dont get me wrong its not going to be a walk in the park to get out of this league (infact this season it would have been easier to stay in the prem) but we are making the right noises etc.. and we will be there or there abouts.

I see on the official site we have signed the young lad from Colo Colo so RDM has seen our weakness and trying to bring in reinforments top man!!!!

anyway Mr Kidnapper thing about my proposal!!

Another great blog Jarrod, completely agree with Beattie going, technically a good player but just never seems to get going, he looks like a short Peter Crouch, he’s all legs.
As much as I liked Greening as a man, I never really liked him as a player, especially under TM, 4.5M is a good deal for us, he was 30 and sometimes its time to say “out with the old…..”
I was skeptical about the appointment of RDM but as with TM I think Peace has made another great aquisition, despite many fans still thinking Peace is killing the club with “lack of ambition” he continues to get great deals on our players and sign decent managers.

Just for the record, there are no replays in the Carling Cup. It’s extra time and penalties on the night if it’s a draw.

Im looking forward to tomorrows game, my tunnel is nearly complete and i hope to be in the Sportsman by 4.30pm. I wonder if Roberto will give Reid a start against his old club??

Just heard that Tex, Brunt, Koren, and Thomas are all unavailable for tomorrow nights game. Thomas is unwell, the others all have minor knocks. Bednar will play some part of the game, possibly him and Cox upfront?
Both could do with a goal, especially Cox.

I predict Moore will get 15-20 goals he looks moore up for it this season. Im wondering about
Cox though,Woods coming along nicely he Miller
and Bednar will rough up defenders glad greenings
gone this will give our other middies chance to
express themselves. Facing lesser keepers we could
have another six or seven goals. so far so good
however Im waiting for a defensive blooper I hope
not because Carson focused could get back into
the england side however I do wish he would
    shout more like Kiely.

Nice blog Laura, positive & upbeat. The squad is coming together and it’s really nice to celebrate a couple of wins. Don’t be too harsh on Jarrod though, after all there wasn’t much to celebrate last year and the poor bloke did keep us amused.

Has anyone noticed that the interviews with RDM , who is after all Italian , are much easier to understand than the previous manager who spoke in broken Geordie. Roberto has not uttered the phrase – I would suggest , once in his time at the club. No wonder the team are playing better. It must be a big help to understand the coach after the nonsesical ramblings of Judas, I would suggest.

This Gonzalo Jara sounds like another class
signing by Albions scouting system,It will be
queit sometime before we see him as I feel
Shelton Martis would be unluky to be left out.
Our squad really is looking class now and I`d
even say if Albion got promoted then
Jeremy Peace may not have to buy another player which would give the bloke a nice
    relaxing summer.
    possible 18:

    Carson. Zuiverloon. Martis. Olsson. Cech.
Brunt. Mulumbu. Koren. Thomas. Moore. Bednar.
Kiely. Jara. Mattock. Dorrans. Reid. Cox. Wood.
