Wolves await Lescott move windfall
Monday 24th August 2009, 11:00AM BST.
Wolves are preparing for a £2.5million transfer windfall as Manchester City finally close in on former Molineux defender Joleon Lescott.
The Everton centre-back is due to complete a £24million move to Eastlands, ending a summer-long saga over his Goodison Park exit. The deal will net Wolves a healthy cash boost, thanks to the sell-on clauses that formed part of his move to Merseyside in 2006.
Molineux officials remain tight-lipped on the details of the deal, but the clauses are believed to guarantee the club between 10 and 15 per cent of any profit Everton make on the 27-year-old.
That could give them as much as £2.5million to boost the coffers from a transfer fee that has stunned the football world.
It will also make Lescott Wolves’ record sale, after moving for an initial £6million three years ago, taking the total income above that from the deal that took Robbie Keane to Coventry in 1999.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We are delighted for Joleon and still remember with great fondness how he conducted himself throughout his years at the club.
“As everyone knows, he missed the Premier League season because of injury but then fought his way back and came to a gentleman’s agreement to do everything he could to get us back to the Premier League.
“Sadly it didn’t work out and we stuck to our agreement, so we were able to shake hands and help him move on to Everton.
“We have always known this sort of deal could happen because of Joleon’s quality. What we could never have guessed was the scale of the deal.”
Everton are now left with the task of replacing Lescott, but boss David Moyes admitted he faces a tough task with just over a week of the transfer window remaining.
He said: “We shouldn’t have been asked to wait this length of time for an amount of cash we think was the correct value for the player.
“If the money had been offered in June it would have been a lot easier for us. The time is against us. The hard part is it will be expensive.”

Great news for us – lets see us invest it now!!
OK, who ever me sign will be on a 2 or 3 year deal worth say £10k but that still leaves an unaccouted for £1m or so.
I’d like to see us improve the Centre Mid position …. Papa Diop would be my realistic choice

Another good bit of business by Jez
Good luck Joleon and at least you will only have one opportunity this season to play against us; I’m sure you will have a good reception when you come to Molineux, unlike the one you are guaranteed to get when you go to Goodison!

Everton and Villa have both failed to capitalise on last years campaigns and Man City and Tottenham are streets ahead now.
It’s a long way back for them now.
Another 10 years mid table obscurity me thinks.

Message to Wolves management…Use this cash to bring in a couple of players before months end to back up our lads…a few more injuries and we will be knocking on Walsall’s door to borrow players.
Go for it NOW

One of the pleasures of supporting a football club is watching a kid from your youth team develop into a top quality player. In the last 10 years we have done it twice with Robbie and Jo. The great regret is that both players have had their best years at other clubs. To me players like Lescott, Keane, Richards and Knowles were worth the admission money just to see them play.Let us hope the next ‘top quality’ kids we produce have more years in an old gold shirt. I can still remember well the night I first saw Joleon in the youth team, everybody knew he was a star in the making.

We could do with another defender ourselves and another striker, also James Harper at 2 mil is a great deal for both club and player and one we should complete. He is Premier quality regardless of what some people seem to think on here.
Defender wise I would love someone to come in to play along side Mancienne but also remembering if he gets injured, suspended or recalled in January then we would be short anyway. It is proving a good move for Mancienne to come to Wolves as he will gain much needed experience, being skinned 3 times by Adebayor will funny enough help him learn.
Bring on Swindon, and then the early BIG one in Hull.

i hope its invested in a new goalie and midfielder and forward.

£24 Million for Lescott, the world has gone MAD. But we arn’t complaining.

Though Elokobi looks like boosting our defence we still need someone at the back. A loan striker wouldnt go unappreciated too.
Come on 3Ms we are no mugs, we know we need more depth in the squad – Keogh cant save our bacon every weekend.
WE ARE WOLVES !!

Thankyou Joleon!

LEAVE THE MONEY IN CITIES BANK AND TAKE DUNNE!

Not sure about James Harper, but his team-mate, Sigurddson played a blinder against Sheff U on Saturday. What about him, MM?

Well done Jez – great bit of business son!

Hopefuuly we wiil spend the money on someone like Diop who has loads of prem experience, isn’t playing too often and can be bought for around 3mil. Don’t think they will by another defender as Elokobi will be like a new signing when he hits form, as he showed on saturday and I think MM is banking on Zubar being in 1st team contention in a few weeks. A striker on loan would also be good, maybe try for Welbeck!
The reports on the internet are saying 20% that gives us over 3 million!!! Dunne would be a great buy as would Man Ciy’s 7th choice striker Benjarni!!! Maybe we could do a deal 2 for the price of 1???

It makes me laugh a bit here in that Moyes is making out that they are the wounded party. Everton paid for him off us in instalments and get him cheap really. They then on a regular basis play him left back and then for England, Upson was picked ahead of him to deputise for him. Lescott wants to play regularly in his proper position. Now they have got a stupid offer, which he is not worth and they call him a judas. Grow up!
All the best Joleon and you might prove to be the best of all their signings, as Toure and Dunne look a bit ropey.
With this money and McCarthy cash, I would like to see us spending another £5m this week!

Kightly?
The lack of news is worrying.
The Wolves website seems to be reporting on SEB and Foley’s injuries but not on Kightly’s.
Or Have I missed something?
Have you seen the latest figures that we made £15m profit over the last 5years.Personally,I don’t believe the figures are based on actual trading since they will take into account Steve Morgan’s takeover. But if we are struggling for a goal with 10 minutes to go on Saturday, would you prefer to have that money in the bank or spent on the team? A quality forward like Tuncay could make a massive difference.
Why does the Express and Star keep banging on about this? It’s like a lttle kid waiting for his pocket money.
We have just got £30+ mil for promotion.
Spend it on Kevin Nolan and Tuncy’s wages and then we will be happy.
Wolves have got a real good chance of staying so break the pay structure with Lescott’s money.
Wolves through and through.

well said mate – you’re dead right – no good Moyes playing the injured party – if one of the big guys come calling it’s just a case of “how much” – we will do well out of this but Everton will do much better
Jog on Mr Moyes – just send the cheque to the Mol before you do!

I always said Joley would be a world class player, but £25M?? The world’s gone mad!!
C’mon 3M’s another holding midfielder and an on-loan centre forward (until we can get SEB & Big Chris fit) would be brill.
We’ve had an encouraging start to the season, let’s not throw it away by simply banking this cash.
UP THE WOLVES!!!!

After Saturday where, yes we tried, but failed, should tell you something Mick.We need a couple of additions to the team and you should be looking at this with great urgency and not at the £2.5m.from Everton. You already have the money as you have hardly spent any so tell Moxey to keep his nose out and go and get these players MIck.

SO THE 15 MILLION PROFIT FROM LAST SEASON HAS PAYED FOR THE LATEST ADDITIONS.THEREFORE WE STILL HAVE THE 3O MIL OF MORGANS AND THE 30+ MIL PREM FUND AND THE LESCOTT 2+ MIL WE MUST BE THE MOST CASH RICH, NO HOCK CLUB IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE CREDIT CRUNCH WHAT CREDIT CRUNCH??????

If David Moyes is so disappointed with Joleon Lescott not wanting to play for Everton. Lets offer £5M for Joleon and have him back at Molineux. At least he would not have to play at Full Back to get into our team. Ha Ha

Don’t fall into the easy trap of thinking its all about the money, bigger and better players. Spirit, commitment and the support of fans can take us along way – just look at Burnley, and Stoke before them.
Come on you Wolves

16, spot on, and moyes acting like a child, spitting his dummy out hasnt helped Lescott make his mind up !! cant blame him for moving in a world cup year !!. Plus wasnt Moyes complaining that they do everything on a shoe string, 24 million should help !!!!
Having a windfall from Joleon’s transfer does not mean that we should spend for the sake of spending. Prudence rather then over indulgence. Getting the right player for price that we are able to pay will not be easy.
To break the bank and the pay structure is not a solution to get players. That’s the easiest way to receivership if we are not careful.
The 3Ms should be now looking into the possibility of getting 1 or 2 players to strenghten the midfield and attack.
Up the Wolves!!!

“Great bit of Business Jez”?? It was pure luck and nothing down to Moxey, who I still say is totally under-qualified for the role he plays. 3 points out of first 9 is not good enough. I watched the game against City and we looked very weak at the back. Lucky to escape by a goal defeat. Could have been really embarrassing and will be against clubs that are more established as a unit.
Come on!! Spend accordingly or survival simply won’t happen!

Everyones on about this 2 mil like we need it! it should make no difference at all. We should be signing more anyway. I got a feeling the plan is see how it goes until jan, and then hopefully morgan will start to get serious.

I agree. We need more players. We need more players. Come on three M’s. Get them in.
We really must beat Hull on Saturday and they have a couple of very exciting forwards.
Splash the cash Mick. There is everything to play for.

If Curtis Davies was worth £9m Joleon Lescott was sold far too cheaply Far better centre half anyday of the week – even with the sell on clause

31. Be realistic .. we looked weak at the back course we did we have gone from playing doncaster to playing against tevez adebayor robinho .. we aint got to compete against city this season . we need to survive and to do that we need to be competeitive against teams in bottom 10
Report abuse
I have been very impressed by the way we have started. Blues and Burnley have had an easier start with 2 home games. I think that both clubs will struggle particularly away from home. I am very confident of beating Hull this weekend and so far we have had our top scorer, our player of the year, our player with the most assists, our second top scorer, our best goalkeeper. It was not down to poor defending on saturday but the sheer class that 3 strikers of 100mil brought to the game and we still nearly equalised! Burnley have had two cracking results at home but will struggle away and their squad is paper thin so injuries will hit them hard. I think Blues are shocking and they will join pompey in the drop. Between Burnley, Stoke, Wigan, us, Blackburn, bolton and Hull for that last place. We need Joe Ledley and an experienced target man.

yes, lets break the bank.
we could sign wheater from boro for £9 million, but what about wages ? he’ll blow any structure out of the water. people on here make it out to be oh so easy this tranfer lark. the set up at wolves is about the team, not indivuduals. as soon as you spunk big on one mans wages, the rot will start from within.
laughing wolf – i’d hardly call man ure and everton an easy start ! the one thing that will change down at burnley is their luck – those teams dont often miss penalties and both did against burnley – that luck wont last.

whats the story here!!! i am reading messages of good business jez!!! we dont get the 24mill!!!its only 2.5mill which will be invested come jan!!!!!
