Wellecomme’s target after goal
Monday 24th August 2009, 8:30AM BST.
Stafford Rangers striker Nick Wellecomme has targeted a goal glut in the games ahead after getting his account up and running for the season.
The 25-year-old took just 28 minutes of Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Farsley Celtic at Marston Road to find the net in game five of the Blue Square North season, with a neat finish from a good ball in from midfielder Jake Moult.
It helped Rangers take a point which could have been three, as manager Chris Brindley looked to win three league games in a row for the first time in charge.
But it left the Marston Road club with seven points from their first five games, more than was likely expected after back-to-back opening defeats.
It was more pleasing on a personal note for Wellecomme.
He said: “It’s great to get off the mark and it has took a lot of the pressure off. Hopefully I can start banging in a few more now. Over the last few games I have felt a goal has been coming, but it was still a relief to get one.
“I always set myself a goal target at the start of the season, but I wouldn’t tell you what it is – I don’t want to jinx it!”
Left-back Fabrice Kassiama stands as Rangers’ top scorer with his second goal in three games on Saturday, although Farsley twice equalised to take a point.
Wellecomme is pleased that the burden of scoring is not just being left to the forwards this season.
He said: “Fabrice is doing very well, it’s great that the full-backs and the midfielders are chipping in this season, without it being left to the strikers.
“We are all working very hard for each other.”
