Albion seniors urged to step up

Monday 24th August 2009, 10:00AM BST.

ALBION 3 SL SL 22Albion midfielder Robert Koren has challenged the club’s new senior players to step up and fill the shoes of Jonathan Greening and Paul Robinson.

The Baggies’ star believes the experienced members of Roberto Di Matteo’s squad have a key role to play in guiding the side through the Championship season.

Koren is confident the squad will move on from the loss of captain Greening to Fulham and vice-skipper Robinson to Bolton.

The Slovenia international said: “Those two players were big players for our club and big personalities to, so they are a big miss for us.

“But this happens in football and you need to move on. We have a different team now and different coaches so we need to be positive and look forward, not back.

“Some of us are still here and we have experience of this league and we are trying to pass on information to the rest of the lads about how this league.

“So far we are doing well and hopefully we will continue like this.”

But Koren insists his own on-the-field role has been unaffected by Greening’s departure, despite the transfer opening up the central midfield role that Koren occupied at the weekend.

He said: “When Jonno was at the club I already had my role in the team, so nothing has changed with me.

“I will still play the same as I did before, but somebody else probably needs to take the place in the team from him.

“Of course he is a big miss for us, because Jonno is a great player and a great person, but that happens in football and we need to move on.

“We changed our style a little bit this year too and we have a new coaching staff, so everything is different. Everybody needs to play their part in the team.”
