Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Petrov fit for Villa season opener
Friday 14th August 2009, 10:55AM BST.
Villa skipper-elect Stiliyan Petrov has declared he is ready to lead the club into the new Premier League season.
The midfielder has not played since dislocating his shoulder against Atlante in the Peace Cup last month but, in what is a major boost on the eve of the campaign, has confirmed he is fit to face Wigan in tomorrow’s opener.
He said: “I’ve been feeling good. There’s been no reaction at all so far so I will be available for selection – but it depends on whether the manager picks me.
“I’ve had a few tackles already and landed on that arm a few times and nothing happened, so I’m confident.
“It is a relief because it’s the most important stage of the season for a player. You need to build up in pre-season.”
It seems likely last year’s Player of the Year will be thrust straight into the action, with Steve Sidwell the leading candidate to partner him in midfield.
Although Martin O’Neill is yet to confirm his skipper for the new season, Petrov is all but certain to take on the role – but admits it is one he would relish.
The player said: “It’s a great honour and a big responsibility on and off the field. You need to lead these boys and make sure they look up to you. It will be a great honour.”
Defender Luke Young (bereavement) and striker Marlon Harewood (foot) are both absent.

“Steve Sidwell the leading candidate to partner him in midfield.”????????

Reo-Coker is the suitable candidate IDIOT!!!!!!!

Yes he can pass a ball but Petrov cannot play in 4-4-2. Look at the bad results over the last few months of last season when we switched to that system (and he had Barry alongside him then!!) In the Peace cup we were awful for the first one and half games then as soon as Petrov gets injured we look a totally different side. Keep Sidwell (or Delph) and Reo-Coker in the middle or switch to a 5 man midfield to accommodate Stan.
