Wolves close in on Mancienne
Tuesday 11th August 2009, 2:00PM BST.
Wolves are now closing in on long-term transfer target Michael Mancienne from Chelsea.
The 21-year-old defender is due in Wolverhampton tomorrow with a view to sealing a season-long loan switch from Stamford Bridge.
If all goes to plan, a deal could be completed for Mancienne to be available for Saturday’s Premier League opener against West Ham.
It is understood the England under-21 international has already looked at properties in the area, as he looks to re-settle in the city following his loan spell at Wolves last season.
Mancienne is in Stuart Pearce’s 19-man squad in their friendly against Holland in Groningen tonight, but he will return tomorrow to begin the process of completing his next stint at Molineux.
The player was so impressive in his 10-match spell at Molineux last winter – when Wolves conceded just six goals in his eight starts – that he was included in Fabio Capello’s England squad for a friendly against Germany, although he didn’t play.
He is set to move to the club at a time when manager Mick McCarthy has decided not to pursue his interest in fellow defender Bobo Balde.
The 33-year-old former Celtic stopper collected his boots at the weekend and is now seeking another club.
McCarthy is weighing up his options in central defence, after admitting Ronald Zubar – his £2.5million summer signing from Marseille – isn’t up to speed.
This leaves Richard Stearman, Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra – currently away with Scotland – vying for the two centre-back spots.
Chelsea boss Carlos Ancelotti has recently been prepared to allow some of his younger players out on loan and last week allowed winger Scott Sinclair to join Wigan.
Mancienne appears to be next out of the exit door, after Ricardho Carvalho’s decision to turn down Inter Milan and remain at Stamford Bridge.
This meant Mancienne failed to make Chelsea’s squad for Sunday’s Community Shield match against Manchester United.

Good lad, I’ll be pleased we don’t have to talk about this anymore.
Great news, and mbami aswell :-) we doe care bout thomas goin :-) up the wolves
Report abuse
get in there hope this is happens would be the best signing we make this season.
Blinding news. This is the kind of move that we’ve been waiting for!!!
OH YESSSSS….GET IN THERE
Report abuse
We may now have a chance of survival with a bit of speed at the back.
We just need a tough centre midfield player to give henry some competition.
offer £10m and sign him up…
Report abuse
About time! Been waiting for him all summer, and hope he plays alongside Stearman or Berra on Saturday, even though I doubt he’ll play first game. Things are starting to look good now for us. Hope we get M’Bami in aswell, because he’s apparently on trial. Once everyone’s fit our line-up could be…
………………Hennessey………………
Foley……Mancienne……Zubar…….Elokobi
………………..M’Bami……………….
Kightly………………….Surman……….
………………..Milijas ……………..
…….Doyle ………………..SEB………
Wouldn’t be happy with that at all. IMO we’re already stronger than Birmingham and Burnley, but this would give us more strength than Stoke and Wigan. Think we’ll stop up. Still, could do with another left-back (Armand Traore on loan from Arsenal) and another striker. That big french geezer looks good.
Some good news at last.
But is this the missing piece of the puzzle?
Told ya!!!!!
brilliant !!
mancienne , m bami and the austrian lad and the squad is complete in my opinion !!
its all coming together.
why do people keep doubting mick ?
deal hasnt been done yet………..
“after admitting Ronald Zubar – his £2.5million summer signing from Marseille – isn’t up to speed”
tell me thats to do with fitness and not up to speed with the premiership, very pleased if mancienne loan goes through.
The molineux is gonna be rocking this saturday !
utw!
Southbank; your line up looks really good actually, apparently we are getting this Austrian giant forward on a cut price deal too, good competition and option in tough games where we will be looking to use set pieces. I agree about left back Would still like us to bring one or two in on free i.e. Michael Ball, Valente, Rocha, Sylvinho even Van der Meyde as cover for Kites and Jarvo
Report abuse
I can confirm he has been looking at properties as its my mates flat on the worgs road, compton, same block as Ebanks and Foley etc.
Great news,
I see the sandwell fans reckon we are jealous of them for apparently stealing a player from us.
sad realy.
he is good, and was excellent for Wolves in the Championship….. In the Premiership he is a boy and learning his game, and if you saw him in the U21 Euro Champs you would agree. So,,,, we need to accept he isnt the saviour, and dont heap too much on young shoulders. I hope he has a great season, and does a job for us, but i wonder why there aint other prem clubs ahead of us?. All said he is def better than Berra, and Stearman and is what we need. Cant wait for the season,,, and a few more signings, midfield and striker please
Report abuse
8 thats an ace team, and certainly capable. If it happens, i say Get the giant austrian in for another option, and we’ll finally have a top lot that can hold their own
Report abuse
Zubar’s having trouble with Black Country speak. Can’t understand the difference between having a ‘mate’ and having ‘mate’ for his tea.
keep the faith people!!!!!
mancienne and m’bami would be class and the austrian lad..
come on people lets get behind the team all the way….
WHO ARE WE!!!!!! (WE ARE THE GOLD AND BLACK ARMY!)
Good News.
If we do sign these players, then we’ve had a blinding transfer market spree.
This will put a bit of wind in our sales for Saturday…West Ham will be blowing bubbles out of their backsides by 5.00 on Saturday.
Chelsea fan here. Good for you to get Mancienne I think, and very good for him as well. However would not want him sold to you – think he is a fantastic longer-term prospect for Chelsea.
8/ team looks about right but surman instad of jarvo?
at times i think jarvo looks a better player than kites, certainly a man i would start with on the left wing
Report abuse
This story gives zero info on a move to Wolves !!!!
The rumours about him looking at property are readily available on the internet. The fact he is with England 21 and won’t be back in England until tomorrow is obvious. There are no quotes in the above story.
I hope he signs, but this story means nothing, lol.
Will be a good signing but we should not be expecting too much from him initially, as he too will be learning his trade in the top division.
I would imagine that Craddock will play alongside, as they will not pair him with Stearman.
The side Saturday is likely to be:-
Hennessey Foley Mancienne Craddock Ward Jarvis Henry Halford Milijas Ebanks-Blake Doyle/Keogh
Report abuse
If he signes in time he has got to go straight in to the team for saturday whether he has trained with us or not. Middlesborough scored the fewest goals in the whole of the football league last season and they managed to score two past us in a game where we were the better team, so for me he has got to go straight in to the 1st team.
Things are looking up though if we can get these lads in. UTW!!!
Good young prospect lads but the prem aint the championship. Watched him in the euros seemd a bit out of his depth
all the best for saturday
Report abuse
good news about mancienne but who is m’bami
Report abuse
15) Foley unless he has moved very recently lives in Sutton with Ward, Collins, Keogh and Kightly!
I agree with the comments about signing the big Austrian and the Cameroon.
If all 3, job done and see you Tesco’s!
Good skills all round, I am now excited again about the prospects of a top 4 finish.
Would love Mancienne, M’Bami (is McKay still his agent?) and this Austrian lad up front, 3 quality additions to the spine of the team!
Will sort us out until January, and can re-assess then, maybe another pacy winger in the mould of Kites and Jarvis?
This is great news.
I think Mancienne, MBami and Maierhofer would be the perfect additions to the squad.
We need mancienne in our defense! I am confident we can compete with him and any 1 of our other centre halfs. Don’t discount Jody Craddock from this either. His experience could be crucial to us and i think we could cope providing it is alongside the pace of mancienne.
M’Bami comes from good pedigree and is the type of strong central midfielder we need.
I dont know anything about Maierhofer but if he is 6″7″ then he will be a useful option. I think having a big target man like him will be so uselful, especially away from home. Halford long throw to Maierhofer anyone??
Even better is the fact that all these players are in the right age bracket. M’Bami and Maierhofer are both 26. I think the 3 M’s are going about everything in the right way. They are not jumping for the Butts/Vidukas on massive wages who arent right for the club as many people on here seem to want us to do.
I cannot believe that certain people are being so negative about MM and the board. I have been an avid fan of the club for over 15 years now and i can honestly say that the club is in the best shape it has ever been over that time.
Now lets get behind the boys on Saturday and establish ourselves in the premier. We can all play our part in getting off to the good start that we need to achieve this.
UP THE WOLVES
Report abuse
Fingers crossed this comes through. Not sure we should entertain the idea of signing him this year, let’s wait until next season when we’ve got a foot hold in the Prem.
Will be good to see Mancienne in a Wolves shirt again.
Someone earlier mentioned our need for competition for Karl Henry. There’ splenty of competetion for jobs down at the Temple Street job centre, maybe he’d have more luck there.
Last Saturday against Valladolid he was exceptionally poor. How the hell he is captain I do not know. He does nothing, games pass him by and yet he’s pretty much still the first name on the team sheet.
Please, let us sign someone who can outright replace him, he’s not good enough for the prem.
8. Surman and not Jarvis? Plus hate to break it to you….Kightly is injured.
8 – Southbank – Good team, only problem is M’Bami is an attaching midfielder, suggesting it would be the 4-5-1 formation with him and Milijas breaking forward.

Great signing, now we have cover on the bench for Ward!!!!!
i wish i were joking!
can some body tell me what we are going to do with
all the centre backs we have as with mancienne a
good player i make that 8 not counting halford who
can play there? and muppet mick played centre back
so you think he may know some thing about it. and i forgot balde who is on trail, sorry but how can we have confidence in him??
Good news and hope it comes off! A relief that Bilbo Baldy has collected his boots! Had enough donkeys last time we went up!
Great news about Mancienne if it comes off.
I’m a bit unsure about M’Bami after the way that McKay used us to flush out interest from PSG the last time that we went up. I don’t think I would ever be able to trust that particular agent.
Has mick come to his senses at last? Mancienne is a must. The Austrian could be useful and has experience and Mbai, who is he? although he too sounds useful.Keep it up Mick and you`ll have us all believeing in you.Up the Wolves.
31 – Absolutely spot on! I think the likes of Boring Bob Wolf and his love children come on here spouting negative rubbish just to wind people up and aren’t the voice of true fans. How great is it to be a Wolves fan right now?!!
Fan-tastic news. I shall be keeping everything crossed – and I mean everything – over the next 24 hours.
Come on me babbies!!
I agree with No.17. Don’t expect him to be the answer to all our defensive weaknesses but it is clearly a big step in the right direction. He will bring much needed pace to our centre of defence.
I would still like us to try and bring one proven experienced player in before the window shuts (in the Ince or Irwin mould) which I know is far from easy but would help steer our ‘Young Guns’ through the inevitable rocky patches we will experience this season.
Even without that,I’m confident we’ll stay up with ease.
Winslow Wolf competition for Kites would be good to be honest, if we have spare time after we sort out our most important business, but wouldn’t worry if we don’t sign another right winger/midfielder, because David Edwards and Greg Halford and Foley can all play there :D
Spuddy – I agree that Jarvis is a quality player. He done really well for us last season, especially in those final few games, and he’ll be alright for a few games, as he’ll be the only winger, but eventually his speed might get found out, I might be wrong though. He’s definately worth a chance, but if Kightly is playing, doubt Mick will play two wingers, so I reckon Surman will play as a left sided midfielder. I honestly think that the two winger partnerships will be Halford/Jarvis and Kightly/Surman.
Oh, and baggie, Mancienne didn’t look out of his depth in the Euro’s. He made a few mistakes, he’ll make mistakes in the Premier League aswell, but for where we’re aiming to end up (avoid relegation), he should be sound alongside an experienced Zubar.
wheres the prem experience apart from a 2 season spell in the prem for doyle and hanneman
Report abuse
still think we will stay up though UTW
Report abuse
Mancienne is totally overrated and would be a watse of money. Get Huth in from Boro!! M’Bami could be a good signing until he pulls a gold jersey on, and Maiaerhoffer, oh dear, what next, a 5 mill bid for Luke Moore? I despair
Report abuse
What’s happened to all the winging, moaning negative comments? I see you’ve decided not to show up. Hope the same thing happens Saturday. In the 3Ms we trust UTW!
Got to agree with Spuddy about Jarvo instead of Surman in the earlier team selection.
As for Mancienne it is without doubt that he played very well for us but only 10 games and one guy would be happy to part with 10 mil (not his own 10 mil of course) to secure his services. As said Mancienne played excellent for Wolves last season but that was against lesser opposition, watching him in the Under 21′s he seemed to struggle a bit. Bottom line though is I am chuffed he will be arriving and i think he definitely will. Roll on Saturday and here’s to 15 points out of the first 6 games Champions League here we come

42)Cynical Spanish Ray and all you other crappyslappers. We all know where you stand regarding our manager….fed up of reading your abuse to be honest.
This is the business end of the transfer window, the time when the longer drawn out deals are finalised and the Mancienne deal comes as no surprise to any of us with patience.
I just hope I haven’t put the evil eye on the deal, but, he was seen chosing curtians at Beatties so we should be confident.
Just remember he’s a young lad, he hasn’t got all the answers yet, so keep your impatienced bottled !
Mancienne would be a great signing.
M’Bami looks good and that 6ft 7 Austrian guy looks good, get him and then i think we will be ok.
The squad has gotta be:

23. Zubar

Just look at the results when he was here. If he had been here all season…Wolves would have won the Championship by the start of March!
If he is coming on a season long loan…then we will more than likely stay up!
He gives a glimmer of hope :)

Obviously the 3Ms have decided that there aren’t enough Ms in the first-team squad, so Michael Mancienne, Modeste M’Bami and Maierhofer to redress the balance. :-)
If Mancienne happens it’ll be because Carvalho and Terry are staying at Chelsea. Those who have complained about the delay need to understand that this is Chelsea’s decision, not ours. Fair play to the 3Ms for sticking at it.
PS.

Surely all fans would prefer a striker with some proven record in the Prem, rather than this Austrian. Have we not learnt anything from the Zubar position? It seems to me for some reason or another we struggle with foreign signings.Does it not make more economic and football sense to spend more money on a proven player, than risk waiting 3months for a player to settle in.We have not got 3 months to waste.

What a quality addition to the team this will be, just hope its true!…. To all the doubters: if Mancienne looked out of his depth in the euros, then why have Chelsea held on so long before giving a decision??? Fact is had Carvalho and/or Terry left Chelsea, Mancienne would have at least been on their subs bench if not their starting 11. Cant be that bad a player for a team chasing the title??? As is always the case the ‘so called’ fans have to be as negative as possible…. do us all a favour and keep away from Molineux so all true Wolves fans can get behind Mick and the lads and give them the support they are gonna need this season…. Cant wait for 3pm Saturday…lets get the golden palace rocking! UP THE WOLVES!!

This move is definitely needed. Make it happen!

67) Reality??? A miles better squad than you had last season. We have a young team packed full of internationals and in Ebanks and Doyle goalscorers, unlike the prolific Luke Moore. I said it a few weeks ago, the only players you have good enough for our team are the midfielders.
Now try and get 90 points. Very unlikely and you will have a hard enough task to get in the top two.
Jog on!

In the interests of accuracy. There are a lot of posts on here referring to ‘Baggies fans gloating over Thomas signing for us.’ He hasn’t signed for anyone yet but if you check the article, there are only four Albion comments and only one of them mentions the Wolves. That one is Sir Terry Baggie and most of you would be disappointed if he didn’t. When he was on trial with you, I said that I’d been hoping we would give him a go as he has loads of potential but would be a risk.
Good luck on Saturday and all the moaners, try to enjoy the ride.

93 and others who seem obsessed with ”Zubar not being up to speed” This was reffering to his fitness specifically, Zubar has been watched by Ian Evans and MM for a couple of years and in pre-season he has shown what he is about. The lad has swapped Marseille for Wolverhampton thats a real life style and culture change, and it seems that communication ”is not up to speed” and that has held things back on the training pitch somewhat…hence he is not up to required fitness yet!!!

NEWSFLASH!!!!!!!!!
Blackburn approach Chelsea about the possible loan of Michael Mancienne as cover or Stephen Warnock who is expected to wrap a deal with Aston Villa later today.
no93 Winslow It’s ok always siding with the clubs official line, but it is not exactly encouraging over Zubar is it. When we signed him surely it is not unreasonable to expect him to be ready from the off, especially when they signed him Moxey was quoted as saying thet think they have been very clever in their transfer dealings.
98; I think they have been clever he was not expensive he is still a young player with plenty of potential and as someone who has worked abroad I think it is unreasonable to expect someone to expect someone to be instantly ready. Yes you have got them to do a job that they are obviously capable of, but life isn’t that simple I wish it was. I wish that I could have instantly picked up the languages of the places I worked in and the different systems, projects and general ways of working. I’m very good at what I do but each time it has been a new challenge and a very steep learning curve and the main barrier has been the language (which I never got to grips with) and that can make a simple conversation/instruction into a complex one. People might go on about interpreters (which I ended up using) and it helps but it still takes time and interpretation can be lost in translation. So I wouldn’t say I’m following the clubs line I would say I am a realist, the club could have invented a mysterious injury or something which teams have done in the past but they told us how it is, no matter how odd it actually sounded. I agree that it’s not ideal but as for ‘encouraging’ I think his performances have been to be honest mate.
