Chevrolet launched its mid-size Capitva SUV in 2007 with a choice of petrol and diesel engines.

Developing a reputation for good value and versatility, the car was offered in both five and seven-seat guises, along with generous levels of standard equipment.

Engines

You really need the diesel. Not that the 2.4 petrol motor is bad, but that the 2.0 diesel is better; better for your wallet, for towing and mud-plugging. It’s quite good, being refined, punchy and economical.

Exterior

Striking a clever balance between chunky SUV and soft-faced family holdall, the Captiva is as far from the aggressive-looking 4×4 stereotype as you can get.

Interior

Family-friendly materials abound, which should mean that you don’t have to wince every time little Johnny climbs on the seats. Everything looks and feels suitably durable, while the cabin is versatile enough to accommodate people and their belongings with ease.

Driving

Built for comfort and not speed, the Captiva offers drivers the ability to cruise comfortably yet scramble over rough terrain without fear of slipping up. Switchable all-wheel drive is a welcome addition, as is the diesel engine’s flexible character.

Ownership

Like a tough holdall with multiple compartments, the Captiva will be an active family’s dream come true. The versatile cabin is impressive – especially the seven-seat variants – while the chunky Chevrolet never feels cumbersome on the road.

What to look for

Parking dents and cabin damage could be signs of a hard-used car that spent much of its time in the city. Soggy clutch and brakes would be the tell-tale signs. Being a 4×4, always check for underbody damage and the integrity of a towbar if fitted. And, for such a new car, evidence of a complete history is essential.
