TV’s Blake on camera with pole
Wednesday 5th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.
This image shows the moment TV presenter Ashley Blake clutched a wooden pole before using it to injure a 17-year-old.
The CCTV footage was shown to the jury at Birmingham Crown Court and captures the 40-year-old running behind the bar at The Place 2B in Sutton Coldfield and grabbing the three-and-a-half foot section from a patio umbrella before going outside where trouble had started.
On Monday, Blake was warned he faces jail after being convicted of unlawful wounding and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He had been found guilty of using the makeshift weapon to strike teenager Greg Jones around the face, before throwing away the pole in a bid to hide it from police.
The BBC today confirmed Blake has been suspended pending internal disciplinary proceedings, while the presenter has admitted he faces financial ruin having spent thousands of pounds on legal fees.
Victim Greg Jones, who was 17 at the time of the attack, suffered a gash to his chin.
Witnesses described seeing the Midlands Today and Inside Out presenter wielding the pole above his head as trouble started outside the bar he used to own in the early hours of January 25.
The court heard how Mr Jones had been trying to calm the situation and asked Blake to call an ambulance after his friend Adam Finn was knocked unconscious by a punch from Steven Sproule. Sproule, 38, of Booths Farm Road, Great Barr, has admitted assault and will be sentenced alongside Blake on September 2.
Blake was acquitted of the more serious charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
