Hennessey set to be Wolves No 1

Tuesday 4th August 2009, 10:56AM BST.

WOLVESTOCK 16 GD 03Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is set to start the Premier League season as Wolves’ No 1 – manager Mick McCarthy has hinted.

The Wales international has performed impressively in pre-season, after responding to the challenge of fit-again Carl Ikeme and new keeper Marcus Hahnemann.

Ikeme and Hahnemann get the chance to stake their claims in tonight’s friendly at Scunthorpe and tomorrow’s trip to Wrexham after Hennessey played 90 minutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

But McCarthy believes Hennessey, who has played the lion’s share of the friendlies, has put down a marker to be first-choice.

The manager said; “Wayne has been excellent in pre-season. I said to him I thought he could have done better with the goal at MK Dons, but so could a couple of others as well.

“That aside, he’s had a great pre-season and has been terrific and really looked the part.”

Publicly, McCarthy is keeping his first choice under wraps, only saying Ikeme and Hahnemann will get their chance in the next two friendlies.

The Wolves boss added: “They’ll be involved in the week,. With the competition for places like we’ve got in the goalkeeping department, you can’t let up and everyone’s got to keep their standards high.”

On his day he has the potential to be a star. Great shot stopper. Just not physical or demanding enough, like Murray was. and I think we will concede a lot of goals from set pieces this year.

I think we have to look at the positive, Yes he needs to command his box, (which we hope he,s been
told by Hannerman to do with Prem Experience which
    he never had before.)
Look at the Blouses, they have bought in a young
keeper, and to be fair i would sooner have Wayne
than Hart. But the majority theme of the blogs now
are that SM & JM gave Wolves Fans the Spin, to sell season tickets, and have not got the extra mile, to give the fans a chance of a reasonable start.

We should be ok once the players injured are back fully fit.

Its going to be one loooong season, i get the feeling we will make signings in the jan window which over the last couple of seasons have changed the team for the better.

I am concerned that we have only bought 3 first team players (Zubar, Doyle & Milijas), the other 3 will be squad players. Our team needed 5 maybe 6 first team players to be able to compete in the premiership! We have also spent £5m less then albion when they got promoted and they had just as good a squad in the championship.

Get some more quality in the ranks MM and we can be a mid table team (maybe..).

Wayne’s one weakness is commanding his box but I am confident they would of worked on this over the summer and Hahnemann will pass on his experience which is vital. He has made some breath-taking saves at times and if he can work on this one weakeness we have a fantastic goalkeeper at our disposal. I am happy with the business done so far, look at all the other clubs and lack of signings and we have signed some real quality. Wake up, we are not a top 4 club we are going to be a team just outside the relegation zone.

85% of transfer activity happens in the final two weeks of the window. there is still time to get the players we want!
Clubs are going to loose players they have no intention of selling but money takes over.
If we sign Mancienne on loan and maybe one of Ledley, Nolan or Ashton.

Must command his area better. Ikeme and Hahnemann are better off their line but he deserves his chance.
Hopefully we can still get some more players in but there is a distinct lack of quality available from the Premiership. Not disheartened though as Pompey are in dire straights and Burnley, Blues and Hull for starters are not that strong!

Wayne’s got all the talent in the world, shame he persists with wearing those concrete boots that root him to his line though. :)

Seriously, jokes aside, I have every confidence in Wayne’s ability, he could prove to be a match winner with his shot stopping, and if he’s been working hard on taking crosses and commanding his box over the summer then he’ll be fine. At his height he should be coming to claim everything as he doesn’t even need to jump the majority of the time.

The only worry is what will happen to his confidence if we take a couple of hammerings (which we will), as he went to pieces when we started to wobble in the middle part of last season.

On the “broken promises” issue I think we should stay calm for the time being as the transfer market hasn’t really busrt in to life let and we’ll hopefully see the 2/3 deals we need completed in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to say it, we’re gonna be the last choice for players and they’ll wait to see if established teams come in for them first. We could’ve done with our squad being completed in the main for the start of the season to capitalise on our kind fixtures, but realistically with the way the transfer market works now, and our current standing, that was never gonna happen.

It is getting worrying though as the noises MM is making suggest his business is done in the main. To look at it a different way, does anyone think the money is there to spend but Mick believes in what he already has? (which would be a big mistake)

I am worried, I am very worried !! As far as I am concerned any signings now are too late we can’t afford players to gel and settle into a team, we need to hit Aug 15th running points on the board. Where’s the premier experience? Where’s the quality signings? Granted Doyle is useful, the rest are gambles I know you need to gamble but they should only supplement the team, I feel we are relying on them, bad news! Why are we only linked to foreigners? (more gambles) Where are the proven Prem names, they’re about whilst we have publicly said we’re investing to remain Premiership, do we mean it? clearly we are not committing the wage structure to premiership needs! I remain optomistic!

I don’t blame the players i will support them 100% and i will use this as an enviroment to let out my frustration.

We were promised a lot we, have bought nothing but potential apart from Miljas. I didn’t expect lot’s i didn’t think we needed lots just maybe spend more on 3 signings with experience as the team has enough potential already.

We have produced two top quality players from our youth team in the last decade and I believe Hennessey will one day prove to be as big a star as Keane and Lescott, but it will take time and probably some other club will reap the benefit. To say next season will be a testing time is an understatement.I am more concerned about the 25 yarders than his lack of command in the box.Remember that goal Ballack scored against Wales. I am sure Premier sides will concentrate on that perceived weakness. Matt Murray did play in one Premier game, and he let 5 in,mostly long range shots.

Have faith people, the 3 M’s go about their business very well and i’m sure there is still at least 3 more players to come in. They are also not daft and realise that the squad we have is thin on the ground and lacking in the required experience. Wayne is one of our best prospects and it wasn’t long ago he was supposed to be of to Spurs for 6M. He is still young and learning the game, the same as most of the rest of the squad, time will tell how they adapt to their next challenge. I know you will all tell me we don’t have the time but the new additions will change all that. By the way, Mancienne , how many games has he played in the prem?. According to the rumour pages he is of on loan to Bristol City, Fleck from Rangers is on his way to the Mol, Kightly is going to Cardiff for 1M+, fat Ronaldo is in talks with MM and we are after Brunt and someone else from Tesco, buy one get one free!

I agree with you #20. I think Hennessey is very weak with shots from outside the box.

I thought the goalkeeper position was one position we would try and improve on. Shame we didn’t.

If we are going to persist with Hennessey we need another top class striker to try and out score other teams!!! I’m not convinced he is better than Ikeme and he was lucky to get his place back last season when Ikeme was injured. When anyone shapes for a shot from 25 yards next season …. oh dear, it’s going to be long long season with him between the sticks.

Drop a cross or let a shot sneak in at the near post and it can be terminal.

And from time to time he gets beat from very long distances that seem to go over his head, there were a couple last year QPR & Charlton away spring to mind, perhaps he doesn’t like London.

Mind you, the usual boo squad complained last year about the same issue and we finished top… nuff said.
I agree that we have a stronger squad than Stoke did at the same time last year. The main problem will be how MM uses it. I just hope the main players (SEB, Doyle, Millijas, Kites etc) stay fit as I don’t see a great amount of ‘premier’ talent amongst the squad players.
