Hennessey set to be Wolves No 1
Tuesday 4th August 2009, 10:56AM BST.
Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is set to start the Premier League season as Wolves’ No 1 – manager Mick McCarthy has hinted.
The Wales international has performed impressively in pre-season, after responding to the challenge of fit-again Carl Ikeme and new keeper Marcus Hahnemann.
Ikeme and Hahnemann get the chance to stake their claims in tonight’s friendly at Scunthorpe and tomorrow’s trip to Wrexham after Hennessey played 90 minutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Doncaster.
But McCarthy believes Hennessey, who has played the lion’s share of the friendlies, has put down a marker to be first-choice.
The manager said; “Wayne has been excellent in pre-season. I said to him I thought he could have done better with the goal at MK Dons, but so could a couple of others as well.
“That aside, he’s had a great pre-season and has been terrific and really looked the part.”
Publicly, McCarthy is keeping his first choice under wraps, only saying Ikeme and Hahnemann will get their chance in the next two friendlies.
The Wolves boss added: “They’ll be involved in the week,. With the competition for places like we’ve got in the goalkeeping department, you can’t let up and everyone’s got to keep their standards high.”

On his day he has the potential to be a star. Great shot stopper. Just not physical or demanding enough, like Murray was. and I think we will concede a lot of goals from set pieces this year.

Expect a busy season Wayne, lack of quality and money spent will mean you will see a lot of the ball.
Before you happy clappers go on the comment is born out of historical fact, SM and JM has let us down big time with false promises. I will be preying for a mirical.

No surpizes in this column.
He will indeed be the busiest wolves player next season, I just hope he doesnt strain his back picking the ball out of the net!

I think we have to look at the positive, Yes he needs to command his box, (which we hope he,s been
told by Hannerman to do with Prem Experience which
he never had before.)
Look at the Blouses, they have bought in a young
keeper, and to be fair i would sooner have Wayne
than Hart. But the majority theme of the blogs now
are that SM & JM gave Wolves Fans the Spin, to sell season tickets, and have not got the extra mile, to give the fans a chance of a reasonable start.

Spirite Wolf (2): I too will be “preying for a mirical” – that you learn to spell. Mind you, I do agree with you that we’ve been well let down with false promises.
i have to agree that what was promised so far hasn’t happened with experienced signings, but theres still time to buy players.
We should be ok once the players injured are back fully fit.
Its going to be one loooong season, i get the feeling we will make signings in the jan window which over the last couple of seasons have changed the team for the better.
Tbh id be happy to stay up on goal difference!!!

I am concerned that we have only bought 3 first team players (Zubar, Doyle & Milijas), the other 3 will be squad players. Our team needed 5 maybe 6 first team players to be able to compete in the premiership! We have also spent £5m less then albion when they got promoted and they had just as good a squad in the championship.
Get some more quality in the ranks MM and we can be a mid table team (maybe..).
Wayne’s one weakness is commanding his box but I am confident they would of worked on this over the summer and Hahnemann will pass on his experience which is vital. He has made some breath-taking saves at times and if he can work on this one weakeness we have a fantastic goalkeeper at our disposal. I am happy with the business done so far, look at all the other clubs and lack of signings and we have signed some real quality. Wake up, we are not a top 4 club we are going to be a team just outside the relegation zone.
Prmises, promises,as usual all mouth and no action. Why is it that this is all we get? Please come clean Mr.Morgan, don`t let Moxey brainwash you,and as for MM,GET RID OF HIM BEFORE IT`S TOO LATE.

85% of transfer activity happens in the final two weeks of the window. there is still time to get the players we want!
Clubs are going to loose players they have no intention of selling but money takes over.
If we sign Mancienne on loan and maybe one of Ledley, Nolan or Ashton.
There is still a lot of deals to be done!!!
The Future’s Bright, The Future’s Gold and Black.

Must command his area better. Ikeme and Hahnemann are better off their line but he deserves his chance.
Hopefully we can still get some more players in but there is a distinct lack of quality available from the Premiership. Not disheartened though as Pompey are in dire straights and Burnley, Blues and Hull for starters are not that strong!

Wayne’s got all the talent in the world, shame he persists with wearing those concrete boots that root him to his line though. :)
Seriously, jokes aside, I have every confidence in Wayne’s ability, he could prove to be a match winner with his shot stopping, and if he’s been working hard on taking crosses and commanding his box over the summer then he’ll be fine. At his height he should be coming to claim everything as he doesn’t even need to jump the majority of the time.
The only worry is what will happen to his confidence if we take a couple of hammerings (which we will), as he went to pieces when we started to wobble in the middle part of last season.
On the “broken promises” issue I think we should stay calm for the time being as the transfer market hasn’t really busrt in to life let and we’ll hopefully see the 2/3 deals we need completed in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to say it, we’re gonna be the last choice for players and they’ll wait to see if established teams come in for them first. We could’ve done with our squad being completed in the main for the start of the season to capitalise on our kind fixtures, but realistically with the way the transfer market works now, and our current standing, that was never gonna happen.
It is getting worrying though as the noises MM is making suggest his business is done in the main. To look at it a different way, does anyone think the money is there to spend but Mick believes in what he already has? (which would be a big mistake)

I am worried, I am very worried !! As far as I am concerned any signings now are too late we can’t afford players to gel and settle into a team, we need to hit Aug 15th running points on the board. Where’s the premier experience? Where’s the quality signings? Granted Doyle is useful, the rest are gambles I know you need to gamble but they should only supplement the team, I feel we are relying on them, bad news! Why are we only linked to foreigners? (more gambles) Where are the proven Prem names, they’re about whilst we have publicly said we’re investing to remain Premiership, do we mean it? clearly we are not committing the wage structure to premiership needs! I remain optomistic!
has anyone heard about any more signings? im worried that weve not been linked to anyone substantial and will have so many players out?
6,7 & 9 Thank you for showing me the error of my spelling, unfortunately my statement though is fact.
We were promised a lot by Moxey after beating QPR quote “we will not make the same mistakes as preious promoted clubs”.
I don’t blame the players i will support them 100% and i will use this as an enviroment to let out my frustration.
We were promised a lot we, have bought nothing but potential apart from Miljas. I didn’t expect lot’s i didn’t think we needed lots just maybe spend more on 3 signings with experience as the team has enough potential already.
We have produced two top quality players from our youth team in the last decade and I believe Hennessey will one day prove to be as big a star as Keane and Lescott, but it will take time and probably some other club will reap the benefit. To say next season will be a testing time is an understatement.I am more concerned about the 25 yarders than his lack of command in the box.Remember that goal Ballack scored against Wales. I am sure Premier sides will concentrate on that perceived weakness. Matt Murray did play in one Premier game, and he let 5 in,mostly long range shots.

omg as if the negativity is starting already & the season hasnt even kicked off yet!?!
at least give them time to start the season!
i cant understand why everyones being so negative – we have a good team who won the championship convincingly last season, we’ve bought in new players & so what about historical fact – the point is just be positive! support the team, get behind the lads & BELIEVE!!!
i think some fans on here just love the negative sides!!
come on lads!!!!!!

Have faith people, the 3 M’s go about their business very well and i’m sure there is still at least 3 more players to come in. They are also not daft and realise that the squad we have is thin on the ground and lacking in the required experience. Wayne is one of our best prospects and it wasn’t long ago he was supposed to be of to Spurs for 6M. He is still young and learning the game, the same as most of the rest of the squad, time will tell how they adapt to their next challenge. I know you will all tell me we don’t have the time but the new additions will change all that. By the way, Mancienne , how many games has he played in the prem?. According to the rumour pages he is of on loan to Bristol City, Fleck from Rangers is on his way to the Mol, Kightly is going to Cardiff for 1M+, fat Ronaldo is in talks with MM and we are after Brunt and someone else from Tesco, buy one get one free!
Believe what you will, but we are Wolves through and through, c’mon me babiees (who evers on the pitch)

god help us has anyone told him he can come off his line

The article does not tell us anything that most fans would expected anyway. I don’t believe that Hennessey is the complete goalkeeper yet, but it should remembered that he has come long way from his first appearance in the championship.
What is not mentioned is the situation regarding Matt Murray. It would have been useful to know the latest on his possible return to full training. Then it will be interesting to see who will go out on loan.
I agree with you #20. I think Hennessey is very weak with shots from outside the box.
I thought the goalkeeper position was one position we would try and improve on. Shame we didn’t.
If we are going to persist with Hennessey we need another top class striker to try and out score other teams!!! I’m not convinced he is better than Ikeme and he was lucky to get his place back last season when Ikeme was injured. When anyone shapes for a shot from 25 yards next season …. oh dear, it’s going to be long long season with him between the sticks.

Some of you on here are so arrogant with comments on other people’s spelling…generally only done when they have a point that you disagree with!
And if fans cannot come onto these boards and have a whinge then what’s the point of a debate.

I would like to see us wheel and deal a bit. For example offer Watford £1m + Shackell for Tommy Smith – he has been in the prem and can play in midfield and upfront, has experience, good quality on the ball and scores goals. Offer money plus Collins for Matt Mills (I know Reading have agreed a fee) but we still need players. Does anyone know when we are confirming the Skipper for this season and the squad numbers?

lets all get drunk and howl at the moon…….
i think my fellow wolves fans that the 3Ms have sold us down the river with there up beat talk of quality prem players coming so off we go to buy our season tickets then low and behold ‘ i cant find any players to fit in to our team’ quote from MM, WHAT try looking abroad numpty like so many prem teams do look at the teams that have gone down, if you pay championship wages you get championship players pay the money for at least 3 prem class players then only then we might have chance at the minute were the same championship side that went up and we’ll be the same championship side that will get relegated its not negativity its a fact i waztched west ham and spurs in some crappy trophy the other day and both sets of defenders were quick we MM cant be seriously thinking of putting craddock in the sarting line up its just suicidal

10. That is incorrect. We won the league by 7 more points than albion. They then lost Gera, Phillips and Albrechsen. their best player, their top goal scorer and a first choice centre back they only brought from abroad apart from Carson who I bet they wish they didnt!

I am coming up from Kent for the West Ham game & hope to see many more during the coming season.
Wayne’s weakness is his failure to command his box & the defence around him, hopefully this will be sorted before the big kick off.Failing this, look who we have to fall back on.Ikeme is a fantastic prospect & Marcus is a prover goalkeeper at this level.

Wayne Hennessey is a great keeper, we have got good keepers to be honest.
I prefer Carl Ikeme though because he commands his area well.
We have made some quality signings and i dont know why some people say we got a lack of quality, some people talk nonsense!

We all understand (don’t we?) that there is no hiding place for a goalie.
A misplaced pass in midfield, a hooked shot that makes the Domino man drop his cheese and anchovy and it doesn’t hurt us too much.
Drop a cross or let a shot sneak in at the near post and it can be terminal.
Wayne is but a youngster and in my opinion can be a bit brittle on confidence when the pressure’s on. He’s a very talented young keeper and we as fans must look after him and back him.
I think MM will certainly do that….that’s one of his man management skills (Await the response to that last comment from his, er, fan club!!!)

I love the Wolves and my heart want’s this team to win every game and prove my head wrong.

any negativity from the fans is going to spill on to the pitch to the players, we all know we have,nt brought in experience players yet but give it time. I think we have a stronger squad than Stoke and Hull had this time last season and look what happened to them. What ever team mick puts out we must back 100% our home form is going to be crucial to us staying up.

Wayne will be very busy this forthcoming season I think this season will be make or break for Wayne. As far as Wolves are concerned Moxley has gone back on his word,he stated several times end of last season we will need to spend more than Albion did yet to date we have spent 5million less and have not recruited the Premiership experience he said we needed.I think youve got to say that it was all said to con the fans into buying season tickets ,along with the 30% hike in tickets its been an absolute disgrace, looks like they havent learnt the lesson from 2003.

On his day he is the best keeper at the club.
However he needs to talk to his defenders more, he should talking to them all the time & he doesn’t & thats where his inexperience shows.
And from time to time he gets beat from very long distances that seem to go over his head, there were a couple last year QPR & Charlton away spring to mind, perhaps he doesn’t like London.
But overall he is a cracking keeper.

4 1 nobody has been conned into buying season tickets, we sold nearly 17000 in the early bird offer before we got promoted. ok the remaining 4000 or so tickets are quite high but they still have tickets left, so nobody,s been conned if anything fans are still waiting for more signings before comitting to buying one. I’m a Little worried that Hennessey as not learnt from his mistakes or has he! i’m not 100% certain behind him being no1, i just hope some major coaching as gone on behind the scenes.
Also what gets me’ is does everyone really think this league holds any fears for us with the exception of only the top 5 of last season? i fancy us against anyone and with a bit of luck we can get a result anywhere, keep one thing in mind wolves have unknown quality in the prem.

A little off topic but why the hell is McCarthy playing Collins tonight?, when he has been told he has no future at the club?…with under 2weeks to go shouldnt we by now be starting to play or ressemble the squad that will be in premier league. this inclusion make no sense at all,…but more worryingly is that he is playing Collins in midfield, where he played a few days ago for the Wolves xi, Ive just had an horrible thought!!.

Don’t really know why people are banging on about certain people failing to provide the cash etc. To be honest I think the money is there, the more worrying thing for me is that MM believes in the squad he’s got. Mind you, the usual boo squad complained last year about the same issue and we finished top… nuff said.
I agree that we have a stronger squad than Stoke did at the same time last year. The main problem will be how MM uses it. I just hope the main players (SEB, Doyle, Millijas, Kites etc) stay fit as I don’t see a great amount of ‘premier’ talent amongst the squad players.

The best player on the park last night by a country mile was George Friend, he really is a class act. This scout we have has found some real gems. Get Ward on loan instead. I would like to see Friend playing away games he works very hard tracking back but a clever player going forward. Halford looked good when he came on. I still think we will have another 2-3 on board for the 15th, if not we are good enough to stay up.

Win-able games at home: Anyone but the top 5.
Win-able games away: Anyone but the top 5.
That in my opinion is fact, the top 5 are so far ahead now, but we did beat Man Utd last time at home. I know the sandwell fans are bitter at their shambles last season but teams will struggle to cope with our pace and energy at molineux especially. I see Terry was right about something ‘going to europe the mowbray way’ yes infact Mowbray is in europe tonight with Celtic!

Have we got another Okoronkwo in Zubar. It s ok saying he has played in the European Cup, but Okoronkwo played for Nigeria against England in the World Cup ,and they got a draw I think, but he still could not adapt to English conditions.I ask the question again ,is it financially sensble to spend £2.5 million on a player with a high risk that he will fail to make it, or £5m on someone with a proven track record. This is especially the case when the whole credibility of the club is at stake if we fail this season.

57. Ridiculous its only France he has come over from (and the champions league) not Nigeria! Portsmouth are in deep trouble and I say lets put one of our relegation teams in deeper trouble by giving them much needed money for David Nugent and Kaboul. Will weaken them considerably and strengthen us.
