Walsall sign trial defender Vincent

Friday 31st July 2009, 11:00AM BST.

jamie-vincent-pressWalsall have signed defender Jamie Vincent on a one-year deal following a successful trial period with the Saddlers.

The 34-year-old was a free agent after leaving Swindon in the summer and has now sealed his return to the club where he made 13 appearances under Colin Lee, on loan from Portsmouth in 2003/04.

A man of many clubs, Vincent also served Bournemouth, Huddersfield, Derby, Millwall and Yeovil since starting his career at Crystal Palace in 1993.

The Saddlers’ left-back berth has been depleted since Paul Boertien was released, with 19-year-old Netan Sansara – after only 10 first-team appearances – the only recognised option.

Manager Chris Hutchings will be looking for his newest capture to compete and bring the voice of experience to the squad.

He said: “Jamie has a wealth of experience at this level and above. He is exactly the type of player that we need.

“We now have competition for places in the left-back position and his arrival can only help Netan’s development.

“I am delighted that we have been able to secure his services, following an impressive pre-season with us.”

Should be a good signing for us. An experienced head in a fairly young team. He should also give Sansara the competition for places he needs to bring him on.

Right, let’s get some pace in the squad now!

we’re gonna need experience if Gilmartin is first choice keeper, we will also need an invisible cloak to put over the goal so strikers won’t be able to see it with Gilmartin standing on the line (cuz he aint gonna come out for a cross).

I think the side is shaping up quite nicely, experience and young vigour and ambition in most areas..maybe the dark horses this season again!?
