A care home near Wolverhampton has been threatened with closure after healthcare watchdogs branded some standards of care poor and medical practices unsafe.

The Care Quality Commission has asked for The Cedars, in Albrighton, to be struck off its register after an inspection.

The home, in Kingswood Road, which is privately owned, has one month to appeal the CQC’s notice of “slow cancellation of services” at the site.

A care home that is not registered with the CQC is not legally allowed to operate.

Bosses from the CQC are working with Shropshire Council to ensure that the home’s residents are found a suitable accommodation home if necessary.

The CQC’s most recent inspection of the home, in March, graded some practices at the home “poor” and branded medication practices “unsafe”, claiming they were putting resident’s health at risk.

Criticisms included failing to keep medication at required temperatures in the fridge and even occasions when residents were given the wrong medication, or did not receive the required dose.

The report judged the overall environment at The Cedars as “good” but graded staffing as “poor”.  Concerns were also raised about staff recruitment and training.

It follows on from an inspection by the CQC last year, after they imposed a condition no new residents could be accepted by the home without the CQC’s permission.

A spokesman for the CQC said today: “We have started the process of a slow cancellation of services with The Cedars.”

Shropshire County Council spokeswoman Maria Jones confirmed bosses were working with the CQC about the care home.

A spokeswoman for Kingswood Carehome Ltd, which was operating the care home at the time of the inspection, added the home had now been sold and that its new owner was registering it with the CQC.
