Wolves wait on Lescott windfall

Thursday 30th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

joleonlescottWolves are awaiting developments with increased interest after Everton turned down an £18million bid for Joleon Lescott from Manchester City.

The club negotiated a sell-on clause of at least 10 per cent when Lescott left Molineux in 2006 for £5m. That means Wolves will pocket a slice of the profit Everton made on the initial transfer.

But it is understood the Toffees are now seeking as much as £28million before reconsidering their stance not to sell – a figure which would trigger a £2.3million windfall to Wolves.

An Everton club statement read: “We can confirm we have received a bid of £18m from Manchester City for Joleon Lescott and that has been rejected outright.”

After increasing their bid by £3million, City aren’t expected to get close to the £28million Everton want.

But it seems they will continue chipping away to get their man as big-spending City look to pair Lescott with £15million recruit Kolo Toure from Arsenal, after failing in an audacious bid to prise John Terry from Chelsea.

The Toffees have already rejected an offer of £15million from City for the England international, who made 235 appearances for Wolves from 1997.

It is understood Lescott, who lives in the Manchester area, would be keen to hear City’s plans.

But one bargaining chip disappeared last night, with City defender Nedum Onuoha signing a new five-year contract at Eastlands.

It had been suggested Everton may have been prepared to do business if Onuoha would have been part of a new deal.

I guess it is up to Joleon, good luck.
The money, although helpful is not our main concern. We need some experienced players who can lead on the pitch. Injuries already to Doyle & Kites seem to have left us short before the season has started.
We need at least 2 experienced premiership players, even if they are 30 years old !

The original deal was for £6M and Everton negotiated it down and before any body mentions it Lescott played the full 46 league games the season before we sold him,and 40 plus the season before that. I an sure Moxey did his best in a difficult position but it was a bad deal for the Wolves. I have no idea why the club are getting all excited about any windfall from the Lescott sale, we should have more than enough money in the bank.If we assume there is approx £20 million left of Morgans money and there is £20million from Sky ,we have spent say £15 million leaving more than enough to enable us to compete for half decent players.A very worrying situation is developing IMO,with players being injured or not fully fit. Also why have we not sold anyone apart from Potter?

    Hey Tez,
28 mil – 5 mil multiplied by the journey time if 2 trains are driving in opposite directions at 60 miles per hour with 18 people stoking the fire and…. kill me.

So I hope Jo stays with a proper team too.

Forget the windfall which may not transpire anyway. COME CLEAN MOXEY, ARE THERE ANY MORE FUNDS FOR TEAM STRENGTHENING, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR INJURY LIST? I am concerned as I’m sure many of you are that we are not being linked with any players of substance at present. This may be a ploy after the James McCarthy fiasco – at least I hope so.

What does it matter what we get if JLo moves? Any money will go straight in Poxey Moxey’s back pocket.

Reading through posts, there is obviously a lot of frustration amongst fans at the failure, so far, to recruit any established premier league players. Please be patient everyone, I am sure that there is a lot of work being done trying to bring in the right players, but competition makes this hard. Also many of the players suggested on this site are probably not going anywhere. Murphy has a new deal lined up at Fulham, Dunne has has stated he wants to stay at City. On a more positive note, it appears that Mancienne is unlikely to be going to Milan on loan.

Doubt Man City will spend £28m on Lescott now, even though it would benefit us with the cash etc. Oh well, before the season starts I’d like to see a centre-back (we won’t get Mancienne I don’t think now so Shittu or Davenport would do me now), a centre midfielder (I’d take Julio Arca from Middlesbrough), a back up striker on loan, and a replacement for Kightly. I’d take Jerome Thomas on a free, because I know that we’re not gonna pay big wages and spend much more money. All the promises we had about splashing the cash have turned out to be lies. Should have known. With what we’ve got, my ideal line-up for West Ham would be…

    ————— Hennessey —————
    Foley — Stearman —- Zubar — Elokobi
    —————– Henry —————–
    Halford ——– Surman ———- Jarvis
    —————- Milijas —————-
    ————– Ebanks-Blake ————-

with Hahnemann, Berra, Ward, Jones, D.Edwards, Keogh and Vokes on the bench.

In my opinion that’s not good enough.
