Reid a possible target for Albion

Wednesday 29th July 2009, 11:29AM BST.

6170336Albion head coach Roberto Di Matteo has revealed he is working to add to the squad and hinted Rotherham striker Reuben Reid could be a target.

The Italian confirmed Baggies officials are working behind the scenes on potential incoming transfers, with 10 days remaining before the start of the Championship season.

Di Matteo declined to rule out a move for 21-year-old Reid, whom he bid for when in charge of Milton Keynes Dons last month.

Asked about the player, the head coach said: “We are working behind the scenes and talking to a few people. We get linked on a daily basis with a lot of players.

“But at the moment I have no news.”

Rotherham manager Mark Robins has confirmed unnamed Championship clubs are in talks with the League Two outfit over former Kidderminster loanee Reid, who bagged 19 goals for the Millers last season.

The Yorkshire side agreed a £200,000 deal with Blackpool over a week ago but Reid has yet to complete the move, suggesting he is keen to talk to other interested parties.

MK Dons had a £100,000 bid turned down in the final weeks of Di Matteo’s reign.

The Italian also confirmed Fulham have made no new contact with the Baggies over captain Jonathan Greening, since having a £4million bid rejected.

Due to our recent efforts at the higher levels I know very little about this lad – but I just hope we aint trying to build a team on lower league players cos we tried this before and it never works….. one or two may step up to the higher levels but too many will be a route to disaster.

We all remember buying these “top strikers” before (Earnie & Ellington) and its too big a step up.

I hope RDM has better targets to bring in.

I don’t mind the Cox signing because he would have been stepping up just one level after scoring 30 plus goals but signing a League two player who has scored just 19 for the millers seems as useless as the signing of Shergar was 2 years ago. Has Dan Ashworth learnt nothing ?! We need players to do a job for 09/10 season not bright young prospects. We have an academy for that. Any other route in for bright young prospects seems like a waste of money if Peace’s squad number plans are anything to go by.

I’m beginning to have major worries about the upcoming season.
I went to the game last night at Swindon and I know it was a pre-season friendly but we were dreadful. Swindon were by far the better team, there players were up for it while ours thought they only had to turn up. There is only 10 days to the season starts and for several players last night it was a chance to impress. Our defending was woeful to say the least, everytime Swindon had a corner or set play I thought they were going to score. Out of the defence only Kiely and Zuiverloon came out of the game with any credit. The midfield were strolling around, not one of them and that includes all the ones who came on after half time did anything to convince me they should start against Newcastle. Tex was a shadow of the player he was 2 seasons ago, and he missed a sitter when it was easier to score than miss, but he managed it. Up front Cox showed some good movement and I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but Beattie, he looks overweight and unfit, he could have stayed on 10 mins after the game had finished and he wouldn’t have scored. If Palace want him, give them a few quid to take him because he isn’t good enough to wear the blue and white stripes.
I’m praying that RDM has a plan up his sleeve, but surely with such a short space of time before the season begins, he should be playing what he believes is his strongest 11 now, splitting the team into 2 over 2 nights is not the way to go in my opinion, his first 11 need to be playing together now getting used to the way he wants us to play. He could then play the fringe players in the game the next night and they would get there chance to impress and get fit.
I really hope I am wrong, but if last night is anything to go by, bottom six not top six is what we have to look forward to.
I agree with Luka (2), we should be looking Premiership class players not league 1 or 2.

Luka…to a certain extent I share your concerns, however I also remember players like Astle, Regis, Hughes, Super Bob who did a damn fine job for the Albion & they all came from at that time lesser clubs. I also saw we were looking at Marlon King but knowing from what he did at Forest I personally wouldn’t give him a second thought never mind a contract of employment. The thing is you give a young hungry kid an opportunity to play at a higher level they’ll play their hearts out so as to improve & go even higher whereas a player on his way down may not have the same desires.

I am not suggesting that these players are not good enough cos I honestly don’t know – and yes there are many examples of players coming through the leagues to do well…. but there ae even more examples of players NOT making it.

You can argue that Earnie & Ellington have made successful careers in football – but both never quite did it with us. Lee Hughes and Cyrille Regis are fantastic examples of it working – but its a different game now and we need a degree of quality to supplement these potential newcomers.

Surely you’re missing the point, Sherjil McDonald was brought in to play in the reserves because we had not produced any home grown talent at this age. There was a chance that he would improve enough to join the first team squad, he didn’t but we’ve just made half a million profit on the deal.

Have we ever had a blistering pre-season? Performances often come down to the amount of work the players have been doing in training prior to these games. The problems seem to be the same as they were last year (it’ll take time to change), and that team would still have done well in the Championship, fear not.

Re: Reuben Reid, hands up if you’ve seen him play!! Thought not. It staggers me how judgemental folk can be about potential new signings.

Take our friendly neighbours down the road as a prime example, according to lot of their fans, Marc Antoine Fortune doesn’t score enough goals and was not worth £3m, yet the same people are thrilled to have signed Kevin Doyle for twice that, who has an inferior Premiership goalscoring record!!

Graham Dorrans worked, let the manager do his job and judge him on results.

My point, if you didn’t get it the first time, was that people in general can be judgemental about potential signings. Dorrans for us, and Kightly for you, being two cases in point. I’m not suggesting Doyle won’t be a good signing, just that a lot of people were very one-eyed in their comparable assessment of both players.

As Bully rightly points out, there are examples of good and bad at each end of the scale.

I think if you give your honest opinion on this site and it is not 100% positive then you are accused of being a dingle! One year ago I had gave the wolves a friendly bit of stick as we were the club going somewhere but a year is along time in football and now we are in their shadow. I think we purchased poorly. Valero, Carson, Donk and Simpson were huge disappointmnts and Olsson and Zuivy were good at very rare moments. We have to re-build quickly as if we do not go UP this season we will definately lose our better players. I have a feeling Ipswich with Roy Keane at thehelm will be a good side along with Sheff Utd, Newcastle and QPR. I have wrote letter to Jeremy Peace regarding the Bednar situation also and I do not want to pay to watch a player who involves himself with the law.

There is a lot of negativity on here. Lower league signings can be good, as long as they have a good track record then it can be vouched for. Cox was the top scorer wasn’t he?? Was mowbray not after him as well?

Recently relegated premiership teams often go for league 1 high scorers. Remember we was after the likes of Rowan Vine a couple of seasons ago, he ended up goin blues. No-one moaned then, it seems we are focusing on how little experience RDM has, thus resulting in bein negative about any signing we are not 100% sure on. Get behind the man!

I take your point re: Bednar, but unfortunately, I don’t think he’s the only footballer out there who partakes in such activities, he’s just the only one silly enough to get caught.

In addition, he’s got a Championship record of 15 goals in 22 games, as much as I agree we can’t condone his actions or be seen to, would we be shooting ourselves in the foot if we cancelled his contract? Money talks, and I think the suspension he’s currently serving may be the full extent of his punishment. I also suspect he’ll be heavily tested in future.

One final thought, every time Bednar has pulled on a Baggies shirt, he’s ran his socks off and shown commitment any of his no.9 predecessors would be proud of, is this enough to allow him a second chance?

    Warren (Albion)
They may get kicked off the park but apart from
Mulumbu and Teixeira then thats all we have,
I`d rather RDM play Valero after Jeremy Peace
spent 5M on him and he also has that experience
    of playing for Real Madrid.
Koren and Valero played together in the prem
and I thought they done ok, Moore and
Bednar who also performed well as a pairing
and would be my front 2 when the latter is ready to play.
I can garantee Morrison and Greening wont be at
Albion come the start of the season.
MORRISON TO EVERTON and GREENING TO BOLTON!

I was having a go at the doom and gloom merchants on here yesterday. I’ve just taken a reality check. Been over for a look at the Wolves site, the ‘Kitely injured article.’ I would reccomend anyone with a sense of humour to take the time to have a glance at the responses. Very reminiscent of the passengers on an Italian Airline who’ve just been told that the engines have packed up, the wings have fallen off, there’s a fire in the hold and the pilot has swine flu. DON’T PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bully – you thinking of Shane Nicholson?

As you say, he’s not actually failed a drugs test. If he had, then I would definitely say get rid of him. However, from what I’ve seen / read / heard, it’s just stupidity that’s got him in this position and trying to be the big man around town, by buying this for his ‘mates’.

Get him back in training ASAP and back up front to get the goals to send us straight back up.

    65. I dont care, if he is associating himself with those substances I do not want to see him play in a blue and white shirt again. He should be put on the transfer list. My letter to JP is strong and I expect a valid response. He is paid a great deal of money (by us)to play football full-time and he re-pays us by pulling a stunt like that.

We were a disaster against Walsall the other night and the defending was comical and was not much better at swindon. I think Kiely needs to start and we need at least 2-3 new defenders along with a strong midfielder (Mulumbu not the answer) Luke Moore will go quiet as the weather gets cold and Beattie looked fat to me at swindon. Come on RDM wake up and see we need players!

33 – you name Foley, Stearman, Elokobi, Jarvis, Jones, Kightly, Ebanks Blake, Vokes, Keogh as some sort of proof that lower league players can work out…. err have i missed something but as far as i can see those are all still unproven at the highest level – and several of them won’t be playing regular for you this year anyway.

If you can come back in a year and talk about those players without booing then i may listen – but right now they are all just CCC players who look like getting a right battering this season.

If I’m wrong I’m sorry but apart from the lack of spelling mistakes and correct punctuation you sound remarkably like our friend Shadrag.

While your point is spot on, you’ve missed the best bit of that post. The irony of a Wolves fan lecturing one of ours on being patient with the team. If you strain your ears, you can already hear the booing.

Isn’t it strange how Shadrag’s disappeared again, yet these random ‘new posters’ keep appearing and making a lot of anti Albion nonsense on here despite claiming to be Albion fans?????

As Terry mentioned, he has a go at someone who he says is an Albion fan claiming to be a Wulfie, but he’s the one who’s blatantly done it this week!!

Shadrag, you are a plonker, but I do love you my newest Albion fan friend xxxxx

I dont get why people think Bednar should not be allowed to return after what he did.
He will be much needed, and last time we was in the championship he was phenominal. He managed to be one of the top scorers whilst having to share game time with Phillips & Miller.

Not saying what he did was right but I hate to say it… but a lot of players do that kind of thing, its nothing rare these days. Its just Bednar was daft enough to do it just before training when he tested positive and got caught out. If u want to kick out every player that dabbles in that kind of thing, there would be very few left. The premiership would struggle to get a 5 a side league going.

    Give Bednar a 2nd chance

He didn’t fail a drugs test, there is nothing to say that he actually took any drugs. He is guilty of being a bit of a Wally.

Shadrag. The real VLB doesn’t post his name in caps. Also he would not have been able to resist addind Saturday’s team. You really are a pudding and must try harder. But we still love you.
