Milijas could have gone elsewhere

Wednesday 29th July 2009, 10:00AM BST.

MK DONS V WOLVES 15 GD 28Wolves midfielder Nenad Milijas has revealed he turned down offers from Spain and Russia to come to Molineux.

The Serbian national captain looks a real coup for Mick McCarthy’s side, after signing from Red Star Belgrade for £2.6m.

Milijas was linked with Real Zaragoza and CSKA Moscow before opting for Wolves and has caught the eye in pre-season so far.

The 26-year-old said: “I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League. That’s why I came here despite having offers from clubs in Spain and Russia.

“I think Wolves is the best club for me and think I can play well here. The people here are good and the gaffer is a great man.

“I hope I can help the club as they will help me.”

Milijas insists pre-season results don’t matter, as the squad look to reach full fitness in the countdown to the curtain-raiser against West Ham on August 15.

A 1-0 defeat to Milton Keynes Dons made it three defeats in a row to lower division opposition after setbacks against Port Vale and Bristol City.

Milijas said: “I can’t enjoy a game when we lose, but these are pre-season games when we’re working on fitness. It’s also important not to pick up injuries.

“I managed to get a few shots in, but they were saved or I missed the target.

“That can be expected, because I’m a bit tired and have just got back into some hard training.”
