Kightly set to miss season start

Wednesday 29th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

PORT VALE V WOLVES 14 GD 22Wolves winger Michael Kightly is set to miss the start of the Premier League season after suffering a reaction to his injured foot.

The 23-year-old had planned to be fully fit for the big kick-off against West Ham on August 15, but – with just 17 days before the season starts – manager Mick McCarthy admits the curtain-raiser has come too soon for the England Under-21 international.

Kightly, who broke his metatarsal in mid-March, failed to make the squad for last night’s 1-0 defeat at MK Dons after making a 26-minute comeback against Port Vale a week ago, before playing half of the Bristol City friendly on Saturday.

McCarthy said: “I think to target the first game of the season was really a bit premature and ambitious.

“So we’ve just got to make sure we take that goal away and allow him to get fit, so we can have him back 100 per cent. He’s finding it difficult to get back to full tilt.

“If he’s not at full tilt, there’s no chance he can play really – certainly not going into the Premier League.

“Sometimes last season he came back at 75-80 per cent fit and he was OK to play. But there’s no chance he’s going to do that again, so we really need to get him fully fit.”

Kightly broke his metatarsal in a friendly in mid-March and has been spared some of the pre-season sessions, as the medical staff nurse him back to full fitness.

Head of medical Steve Kemp said: “This combination of injuries to right hip surgery and left foot surgery made the planning of his rehabilitation very difficult.

“Michael has picked up minor niggles. Now our focus will be on addressing these and concentrating on his strength and control.

“We’d like to think he’ll return to training in a couple of weeks, after training with fitness coach Tony Daley.

“He will hopefully be back for the large majority of the season.”

Along with Kightly, Wolves’ third warm-up defeat in a row was compounded by injury to trialist Jerome Thomas, who went off after 32 minutes with a hamstring niggle.

This comes at a time when McCarthy is also without £6.5million record signing Kevin Doyle, Andrew Surman and Chris Iwelumo.

The manager said: “Jerome just hurt his hamstring, but we’ll look after him and see how he is.”

But he has promised to give the former Charlton wide-man another chance to prove himself.

McCarthy said: “He might be around for a while depending on how his hamstring is and we’ll get him right and see him play again.”

Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme played 45 minutes last night, after the latest scan results on his back came back clear.

Great. No Kightly, no Doyle, no Premier League experience, and no wins against garbage UK opposition. Remember 03 when we lost Murray and Lescott through injury, didn’t bring enough players in and had a similarly shocking pre-season? Only this could happen at the Wolves. Anyone for a game at Morecambe next week? No, me neither. Learnt our lessons my back side.

This injury situation is beginning to be a bit worrying.

As we saw with Hull last season, a good start can keep you going for the full season ahead. I know its only pre-season but we are already missing some key players for the first game.

I think the 2 loan signings are needed and quickly (too just be sure) if we lose more players we could be in some serious trouble.

Think the board need to realise very very quickly that whilst we do have some real quality, the strength in depth is paper thin! If we are going to put up a more convincing fight this season then for my money we need to be spending far more on premiership quality or certainly potential! We have dabbled in the Market so far but nothing like I was hoping. Fully fit I think we have got a great chance but we need to acknowledge that injuries will occur and we need to be able to cover that!!

At least these injuries have come at at time before they are costing us any points and when we can still do something about getting replacements in.

Doyle and Kightly are major players for us and this needs major consideration.

If we are working to a budget for getting players in then surely the budget will be “adjustable” for such unforeseen problems?

Kightly should be fit by now and the fact he has had a setback is worrying. Are we wise to assume he will make his next predicted comeback date?

The right thing to do. No point rushing him back for the start of the season and then him being missing for months. Very dissapointing though as it’s imperative we hit the ground running and kights is one of the 4 or 5 key players we’re gonna be reliant on performing next season.

The worry at the minute is that the positive atmosphere surrounding the club and the momentum gained from promotion (which stoke and hull rode last season) seems to be disappearing fast.

The other couple of signings that are (hopefully) being worked on need to arrive sooner rather than later to reignite that positive atmosphere and momentum.

We do need another sentre mid and should have addressed this when Leko didn’t sign, we painfully need cover on the flanks and upfront, though I think Vokes will do ok this season. Players pretty much walked through the game last night and SEB if he could have been bothered could have had 4. Quite likely Mancieene will go to AC Milan I mean wouldn’t any of us. We will still be fine as the quality is there we just need them all out on the pitch at the same time and I think Burnley, Hull, Stoke and Pompey will finish below us. This just exposes how thin our squad is, its a bit frightening isn’t it? We need to go for another forward a central defender, a central midfielder and a winger before the season starts. Our rivals the established Prem. teams like West Ham have deep squads we don’t. We have to fight for any reasonable player provided they don’t have Willie McKay as their agent so I guess that counts out McCormack.

Pre-Season is always a strange time. Should we be taking these results seriously? My feeling is that whoever is put in front of us we should go out and try and win the match. To be blunt we have lost three matches against supposedly inferior opposition and scored precisely 0 goals does not bode well!

Sat right behind the goal at MK Dons last night. We thought Halford and Zubar (odd mistake apart) looked pretty good, but SEB looked a little chubby! I admit I already have pre-conceived opinions on Keogh, but again he struggled embarrassingly in front of goal and will cost us many hard to come by chances when the pressure is really on. His heading last night was woeful. Having said that MK scored from their only chance of any kind in the game and our build-up play outside the box was of some comfort. SEB has obviously proved he is quality and I’m sure Doyle will do too. I would stick with Vokes, as I think he will come good and will be a useful variation when we need a more aerial route, but beyond that we have problems – Big problems!

    Another reality check, Mick!

Not quite ready for the panic button but heading that way.

90 points and a clear gap from second place lulled us into a false sense of security. we never were much more than a good Championship side who relied on the inadequacies of others to show us in a better light.

Last season, the terrific start came on the back of an excellent pre-season. This time, we’ve lost to 3 lesser teams and are scoring very few goals.

The 3 Ms may well gamble on Doyle and Kightley being back quickly but as many people have said, apart from Man City away, the start is relatively comfortable and – like Hull did last season – we need to pick up points on a wave of early optimism and momentum.

For me, the doubts about Mick are always his ability to turn things round when things start to go wrong and if we start the season badly, I’m not convinced he has the ability to put it right.

At the moment, the ability of Milijas seems to be the only bright note and that’s nowhere near sufficient to survive in the Premiership!

I’m not one of these typical wolves doom merchants, however 3 defeats on the trot and I am seriously beginning to wonder how we are going to compete in the Premier league. Fair enough – pre season is all about getting the players fit, working on systems etc, however given the quality of the opposition you must question our shocking lack of quality in depth. We have spent circa £15m so far which is peanuts. If Hull can be looking to Hijack Bent and apparently have matched Tottenham’s £15m valuation how does that make us Wolves fans feel. Are Hull bigger than us?? NO! Do they have a bigger fan base? NO Ok they have been in the Premiership for one year, but surely the financial gap is not that big.Brum have spent more than us, ok you can argue they had a lot of loan players last season, but even so – their chairman is determined to buy and back the manager.Whilst its not panic stations just yet – We do need to go into the season with some momentum ie a few good pre season results behind us.There must be some good transfer bargains out there, who knows the 3 M’s may surprise all of us before the end of the window, BUT and it’s a big but, there is only 2 weeka until the start of the season. We have had to wait 6 long years to get this chance again, Moxy has continually stated that we under-spent last time in the premiership and that lesons had been learned.Getting promotion whilst the lads did brilliantly, was a lot easier than staying in the Premiership will be, Lets all hope those purse strings are not shut just yet, I feel that 2 possibly 3 players is all that is required to enable us to compete with the teams around us. Burnley,Brum, Portsmouth,Bolton,Stoke,Wigan,Blackburn and WOLVES will lets face it be in the bottom half of the league, surely we are good enough to escape the drop, we just need a couple more astute buys. This is a complete disaster with our top players and new signings going down like flys, our preseason performances against second rate Aussie outfits and embarrassment against MK Dons, our players are not fit and are not ready to face the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and so on, and we have already signalled that we will be the Premiership ‘joke’ this Season, in telling everyone that signing Doyle for 6 million was a record signing for the club.!!!

It was always the understanding of most supporters that the owner claimed at the end of last Season that money woulld not stop us signing the right players for Wolves, and amounts of 50-60million were rumoured to be available. Yet, while we have signed half a dozen new players we have spent less than 20million, and lets be honest, many of the new signings would never have rated with any other Premiership club.

And please someone tell me what this jaunt to Aussie achieved with the squad taken together with all the back up staff and ‘hangers on’ it must have cost us several hundred thousand, or maybe the services of another player !

After reading McCarthys recent post about how unfortunate the right players were not available to Wolves, I think its time for him to take a walk as I believe that he will be a disaster in the Premiership…

    Mr Morgan….we need now

still looking forward to west ham but i did expect quality experienced premiership players to be brought in.anyway here’s hoping we get others in soon.

Will all miss the start of the season & tthe above article reports that Surman is injured too, add to that Elokobi aint played competetive footy for nearly 12 mths. We have a trialist who hasn’t played for his club for 2YEARS????? why????

Though I do feel sorry for Thomas, thought he may add to the squad.

It was reported at the weekend (by a quality paper) that a deal has all but been done to bring in Alan Smith I presume this would be a season long loan, due to his wages, hopefully this deal will come to fruition & I would go for Michael Ball(free), Deitmar Hamman(free) & Danny Welbeck (loan) that would give us cover & experience across all of the areas we are lacking at the moment, they should also leave us funds for reinforcements in January. This also means that Manncienne would stay where he is unless Chelsea will allow us to sign him permanently, but I think he would be a wasted loan signing. But we need to act quick.

Everyone is talking about the lack of quality and experience in the Wolves squad, and the question is..are they right ?

If Wolves needed cash and put up the whole squad as possible transfer to other clubs to consider, how many would interest clubs in the Premiership.?

The answer is one…SEB – the remainder of our squad would attract the lower half of the Championship or even division 1
In fact, if Wolves bomb this season as many are predicting, we will not keep SEB back in the Championship, and he will move on.

I feel for SEB who I think has been let down by Wolves management in not bringing into the side experienced Premiership players.
If Wolves are relegated his value as a player will have dropped in the eyes of Clubs that may wish to sign him. He may well have been poorly advised in signing a new contract, as if we fail to bring in experience now to work with him, Wolves will fail and his career will be tarnished

As well as Paul Ince and four former Molineux players being involved for Milton Keynes in last night’s friendly, another Wolves connection watched the game from the stands.

Popular midfielder Alex Rae is now first team coach for The Dons and despite seeing his former team losing out, he was optimistic of the club’s Premier League chances in the top flight.

He said: “You look at the strength in depth of the Wolves squad – there’s a lot of good, good players there. I really like the look of the boys Jarvis and Kightly – Mick has got some really good players at his disposal.

I think its time to re-think the transfer policy at this club. We have spent less than albion and they went down. What makes anyone think we are better equipped in staying up, having spent less, not addressed the centre back position as I think Berra, Stearman, Craddock are too clumsy, error prone and slow. Midfield, we need a cruncher, a midfield destroyer, as Henry wont put his foot in. Anyone note The Serb was capt last night…. He’s hoping he be capt this summer. 4-3-1-2 is the formation we need this season, midfield 3 tight, Kites playin in the hole, behind SEB and eventually fit Doyle. MM admits he needs a re-think on the playing side, I hope Moxey & Morgan rethink their transfer strategy as its looking to be abit of a disaster. Not enough investment = relegation. And 3 all prem teams lose to lower opposition in friendly look at man city and look what they’ve spent.

Mick has a tight budget along with Hull, Pompey, Wigan, Burnley, Stoke (Im not counting blues as they will give 40k a week to anyone) and the shrewdest managers will make their clubs survive. 2 loan signings, 2 permanent signings to go.

3 years ago I was concerned, we lost 4-0 at cardiff with youth teamers on the bench just so we could get a squad together. We had just lost twaddle and half the squad after the parachute payments. Mick turned the club around and Morgan coming in to add new life. We dont want players not bothered (luke moore, carson, all of newcastle united!) we want to keep our policy of getting the best young players who want to join Wolves.

59, yorkshire wolf. Totally agree with you about us (the fans) creating the “positive atmosphere”. No one will get behind the lads more than me, and i would never bring any negativity to the mol on match day.

I was talking more about the general feel around the club and you can’t deny there’s been an obvious change from the positivity and excitement that was around a month or two ago. Apprehension’s clearly creeping in. Admittidly, it’s injuries and poor friendly performances/results (which don’t overly concern me personally) that have contributed to this. But for me it’s the lack of action in the transfer market (or lack of real quality signings) that is really worrying people. We said we wouldn’t “do an albion” and were really gonna give it a go this time but that hasn’t materialised let. I think people would be a lot more relaxed if mick hadn’t said that his main transfer business was done. People thought the likes of halford, surman etc would be back up/ones for the future, not major signings.

I agree negativity is never helpful, and as i said previously i am never negative at the mol and support the boys 100%.

I believe it’s a good thing for the 3 M’s to know the fans are concerned though as promises (made by morgan & moxey) have not been delivered on as yet, and according to Mick they won’t be (as his main business is done). If they are i’ll be the first to hold my hands up.

We all know that players that have been out for a while are more susceptable to injury so lets not get excited. I still feel that Jerome Thomas would be a useful addition to a small squad.

Most of us on here would like to see at least two more quality signings sooner rather than later but would not endorse any panic buying or bringing in of players that would disrupt the balance of the club.

Its a difficult job and i believe that the current management (on all levels) deserve our complete backing until such times that they have proven to be incapable of leading at this level.

One or two quality signings could make a big difference. That extra bit of quality up front with real pace and a decent centre back.If they could make these signings no one would then be able to say they didn’t give it a real go.If they are worried about the financial commitment then sign players they can move on if things don’t work out.We need some inspiration from the top.

Spending beyond their limits and ending up in years of debt and possibly going under, if we got a billionaire owner in (eg man city) I would still be cautious as what happens if they get bored they go and take their money with them and the club are left with a huge wage bill and the support will soon drop off as they can no longer afford to bring in stars. Lets be greatful for who we are. A premier league club with some of the top youngsters and just to make things that little better albion are back in the panda pop league. like many have said already. money in the kitty, 2 loan signings to use and the free’s. No one has gone transfer mad so far and i dont anyone will. Wolves and secure moneywise and many of the prem teams arent. high wages large squads, they will be a lot of unloading of players later in the season. the injury situation is a bit worrying but as a squad we should cope, esp with the new additions. pre season is about fitness then sharpness, see how things go at doncastor compared to end of last season. it’s going to be a tight season, but how you spend isnt the only way to stay up. there’s going to lots of twists and turns, and how wolves end up will be down to team spirit and staying focussed, like last season, there were plenty of times last season when they could have gone to bits but didnt. I might sound optamistic, but this time round i’m thinking we can do this, rather than ‘maybe’ like last time round.

Only a change of attitude (on the whole) the last few seasons has helped in that endeavour. We need the same attitude to stay in the prem, not this talk of we are repeating 6 years ago. After the signings we made, i was thinking we have a good chance of survival in the Prem, that was if we made a few more good quality signings, no sign of that yet, and there is really little time now before the big kick off, add to that Kights is still not right, he started breaking down again in the friendly, you cant help but feel this injury is going to be a regular issue for the lad, Doyle should be ok, Hernia ops are routine, and he should recover from that quite quickly, we have Jerome on trial and he has broken down already, if he gets another chance and break’s down again then we should show him the exit, we don’t want a team full of sicknote’s, sounds harsh but a team filled with injury prone players is not going to keep us up.
Come on 3m’s, give us fans some real hope, our pre season has been poor to say the least, bring us these big signings you promised, surely Doyle is not the only one you were going to spend decent money on, i know we cant buy mega bucks players, but players around the price tag of Doyle can’t be beyond our limit’s can they?
