Wolves to debut trialist Thomas

Tuesday 28th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

jerome_thomasWolves will hand former Charlton left-winger Jerome Thomas an immediate debut at Milton Keynes Dons after taking him on trial.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal reserve, a free agent after being released by Portsmouth, trained yesterday at Compton and travelled with the squad to face Paul Ince’s side tonight.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “He’s training with us so we can have a look at him and he’ll play tonight.”

Wembley-born Thomas, who made 103 League appearances for Charlton – including 71 in the Premier League – has the top flight experience McCarthy has been craving and could add competition on the left flank to Matt Jarvis and Andrew Surman.

Former England youth international Thomas spent last week on trial at Hull, playing three friendlies for the Tigers, scoring in two of them.

But boss Phil Brown reckoned the player wasn’t an improvement on what he already had.

Thomas has now fully recovered from a mystery stress fracture of the spine that kept him out of virtually all of his only season at Pompey.

Today he is looking to relaunch his career.

He said: “My immediate priority is getting playing again after last season. I’m ready now, my back feels better and I’m desperate to play.

“I feel just as good as I did at my best. It’s a case of finding the right club and the right manager who wants me to play my game.

“I just want to play and if something comes up, great, I’d certainly consider it. I’m an attacking option, I can play left or right, or in the ‘hole’.

“If I’m not scoring and setting up goals, I’m not doing my job.”

Thomas is confident he can break into the team at Wolves if he stays at the club long-term.

He said: “I’m quite confident in my own ability, so whoever I join, I think I’ll be able to break into their starting XI.

“If I’d stayed fit at Portsmouth I think I’d have been playing week-in, week-out.

“I’m confident if I can get a good pre-season under my belt, I’ll be able to feature.

“The Premier League is probably the place to be at the moment, because I’m a high intensity player.”

If anything we could do with a CM with attacking qualities, not another left sided player!

Seriously we abandoned interest in that Leko because he wanted 30k a week, yeah fair enough don’t blame Mick, But how come we haven’t been linked with anyone since in that position?

We still need strengthening in all areas except in the nets.

I can only hope we are lining up a move for Mancienne because there’s no way he will get first team football this season at Chelsea.

We could do with another 3 players in my opinion – One experienced, quick, intelligent Centre half, Who will improve the likes of Berra and Stearman.

A Defensive MF as we’ve not yet replaced Olofinjana, though he was overrated.

A target man up front since Iwelumo won’t be fit and Doyle is out.

Would be pleased if we signed him. Was very impressive when he first broke on to the seen with charlton so has done it in the prem before, hopefully he can get back to that level. We definately need another “out & out winger” (surman & halford can do a job out there but don’t fit in to this catergory for me) given kightly & jarvis’s injury proneness & he can play both sides.

Suprised hull haven’t taken him given that he scored 2 in 3 freindlies, and they can’t seem to get anyone to sign for them at the minute.

He sounds hungry and eager to re-capture his previous form aswell so should fit in with the current wolves mentality.

103 League appearances for Charlton – including 71 in the Premier League – is that not Premier League Experience? Portsmouth have money troubles….it was on Sky Sports News this morning. 77.7 million for players sold and 4.3 million spent. That equals trouble to me. It looks like pompey can’s pay his wages as there are rumors of another 2 to 3 players on the way out.

Everyone who writes a comment on this site is asking for a left midfielder, I think he fits the bill. He is still young, he is very eager after a season out and he has played at least two seasons in the prem plus he is free! He scored twice for Hull, why they didn’t sign I don’t know but their loss is our gain. I think the flow of money is slowing up so if we are to add to the squad I can see him joining, Macienne as a loan now Terry is staying. Hopefully a loan striker and a midfield signing from the Lescot transfer cash (hopefully) and I think that will be it. I would like to see more players like everyone else but we have to be realistic here. With the squad that we have and a few more to come we should stay up then we can build again :-)

Dunne will not come to wolves. Its very unlikely the likes on alan smith or nolan will come either. If other more estalblished teams in the premier league show interest in them were doomed.

We cant get experience like they promised us because they dont wantr to come.

Mancienne may come on loan i dont think hes daft enough to dignb permanent.

I think we should get thomas bring in mancienne on loan and offer balde a contract from what ive sene so far hes shown some excelent potential for when hes fit.

We need another central midfielder nolan should come to but i doubt it.

I dont think a loan signing would do for a striker we need some committed and have them on a permanent basis so they have something to fight for.

we have a tough season ahead. If we can somehow get these signings to finish of the squad we may have a small chance of surviving.

Always worth giving someone a trial – doesn’t cost anything, does it. Not sure why Hull didn/t sign him but who cares, lets back MM & Co’s judgement – they haven’t done badly with the likes of Kightly, SEB, Foley & Jarvis & yet plenty of sides could have signed them but didn’t. Maybe Hull don’t play too much with proper wingers (as opposed to LHS & RHS midfielders), we do & we need cover/ competition for Kightly & Jarvis, both of whom have had their injury problems. As he’s been released by Pompey we won’t have to pay a transfer fee. See,s like a good idea to see what he’s like to me.

What’s the old saying Messrs Morgan. Moxey & McCarthy…’if you pay peanuts you will get monkeys’
I truely believe that the Wolves management are attempting to form a Premiership side from the best of last seasons championship squad, without spending any significant money.

We have picked up about half a dozen players for less than 20million, many of which would not be entertained by other Premiership clubs,
and suspect many of the clubs are having a good laugh at us.

We are repeating exactly what Sir Jack, Moxey and Dave jones did to wolves last time we ventured into the Premiership, and have no doubt, we will pay and be relegated unless we loosen the purse strings and pick up a couple of players with leadership and experience…Its not too late, yet.

There are many players that would support well our ‘young and hungry’ squad of players still available to Wolves, lets hope to hell our management pays some attention to the moto ‘ Out of the darkness cometh light’ and do something positive.

How is he a Championship player ? he played how many games for Charlton in the Prem. Let Mick decide if he is good enough.
As for all the negative comments, all the people complaining about the signings, i bet you were up in arm’s when Mick signed lower tier players such as Kightly, get my point
    In Mick we trust.

decent enough player and if stays fit a good addition to the squad.
when injuries start cropping up during we need cover for all positions.

would like to see maccormack from cardiff and if we need a someone to replace/cover iwelumo then chris killen from celtic would be a good shout.

I think that he deserves a chance. He would have played more last year if he didn’t have a broken back.

I think that we need someone to sit in front of the defence… and I would go for Didi Hammann because he might be 34 or 35 but he hasn’t had to change his game because he has never relied on pace.

Running the risk of causing a massive row… I also think that Andy Keogh may shine in the premier league because there are two things that he will have more of in the prem… Time and space!

I would also like to see Balde given a deal untill xmas (Initially) if he can get himself fit because he is fantastic at positional play and good in the air.

What about Gary O’Neill from ‘Boro?

67 McCormack? are you sure he has just signed a new contract!

    66. EXCELLENT POINT. Seems a lot of us want to be queueing up to be the next leeds, norwich, charlton, southampton. How many more can I name. People forget football is a business. Likes of Nolan and Smith, no better than we have and overpaid. We go down, then we still have to pay their big wage or terminate their contract cuz no other muppets want them. Where did Newcastle’s prem experience get them?

Keep building the way we are, with a few clever additions this club is good enough AND financially stable.

If we go down, we still have a good squad of young players to build again with!!

    UP THE WOLVES!!

As much as I’d like to give him a chance, because I think he’s got good potential after a good few games under his belt, looks like we won’t sign him. He played tonight and went off injured, but almost went to scoring straight from kick-off. Unlucky

Why all the doom & gloom, we have not even kicked a ball in anger in the EPL yet. Anyone who has any kind of ability on a free is surely worth looking at, maybe another “Michael Kightly”. I see rumours are flying about MM running the rule over Ross McCormack…..personally I would prefer Joe Ledley…but in the papers today so are Pompey & Hull. However be wary as ‘knucklehead’ Willie McKay is his agent. I hope they tie up Michael Manccienne from Chelsea this week & I still believe the 3M’s are working tirelessly behind the scenes for further strenghtening of our squad. Lucas Neil has not re-signed a contract at WHU. He could definitely be another option in our defence formation. What’s happening with Sam Vokes….is he part of the pre-season games?

I’m not going to come on here and slag him off as I’d hoped we might take a look at him. The season before last he played against us in the CCC when we had a young full back on, Thomas really took him to the cleaners. The doubts are his fitness and his attitude. Has he grown up enough to realise that so far he’s achieved very little. It’s no good being remembered as a legend in the night clubs, which is the downfall of too many young English players.
On the topic of free agents, isn’t this a misnomer as it means they’re free to sting the club for a massive signing on fee?

Don’t be negative at the games either, being critical is all well and good on the message board but our lads will need all the support they can get when on the pitch against the quality sides. Hate when Im at the match and our players get slagged off time after time be a true fan even if we aren’t playing well spur em on, shout and yell at em to keep them battling but not negatively as that doesnt help anything as that negativity can be felt on the pitch and wont spur them on dont be booing it might actually work to keep us up there this time!

So that’s more than half the team that are average Championship players at best.We are in trouble, and we are trying to do it on the CHEAP AGAIN. Yet, some season tickets are over 600 quid, no ownder there will be empty seats for the opening game, that itself sepaks volumes
