Saddler Jones vows to win fitness fight

steve-jones1Walsall striker Steve Jones has vowed to win his fitness fight as he bids to prove his worth to the Saddlers.

The versatile attacker should feature at Mansfield tonight (7.30pm) after making his bow in the 2-2 draw at home to Albion on Saturday.

Manager Chris Hutchings’ summer signing had already missed the games against Rotherham and Wolves after picking up a calf injury in training.

The former Burnley man has confessed to struggling with his pre-season fitness, but insists he will be ready for the League One kick-off at Brighton on August 8.

Jones said: “The fans haven’t seen anywhere near the best of me, so hopefully I can get a run of games and get up to match speed.

“I’ve not been able to do stuff in the summer and have felt quite far behind, but now I’ve had a couple of weeks of training I can get back to it.

“I’ll get my fitness quite quickly so I hope to play the majority of the game tonight and then the following Saturday.

“I need to get my fitness up, because I want to be nailing my place down.”
