Olsson targets Premier League return

WalsallWBA 5 RH 25Albion defender Jonas Olsson has pledged his immediate future to the club and targeted a return to the Premier League with the Baggies.

The Swedish stopper insists he is focusing on the Championship season and dismisses summer speculation linking him with a move away.

He said: “A story was mistranslated in the summer. The way I feel now I’m focusing on the new season and training. I’m looking forward to playing for the gaffer this season.

“It was disappointing to get relegated last season but I enjoy it here, I like England and I want another shot at the Premier League.

‘But hopefully it will come with this club next season.”

Olsson is enjoying the challenge of impressing new boss Roberto Di Matteo, after being signed for Albion by former manager Tony Mowbray.

The one-time NEC Nijmegen star is predicting a subtle change in approach by the Baggies this season.

He said: “The new gaffer is settling in well. It’s a whole new routine for us with Eddie Newton and Michael Appleton as well.

“They are adding their touches to training. I wasn’t here for pre-season last year but they have a football philosophy which I like.

“We are aiming for good football, but equally we’ll be more direct and that will suit us fine.”

Olsson has admitted further defensive improvements are needed if Albion are to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

He said: “We played a League One team at Walsall on Saturday and it wasn’t an easy game.

“We made the same kind of mistakes we used to make last season.”
