Showers failed to dampen the spirits of dozens of classic car enthusiasts who gathered beneath grey skies at the Black Country Living Museum.

Colourful characters donned fancy frocks and flannels and blazers to look the part with their 1920s and 1930s period cars.

They brought pink champagne and picnic lunches for the annual Festival of Black Country Vehicles at the museum in Tipton Road, Dudley.

Austin, Jensen and Sunbeam cars were among the vehicles on show at the weekend, while Wolverhampton-based Clyno was particularly well represented.

Clyno produced more than 40,000 cars between 1922 and 1929 before being wound up and proud owners who still take to the roads in their restored models sang the praises of the vintage vehicles.

Mike Dancer, who owns Dancers dresswear hire store in Peckingham Street, Halesowen, was showing off his 1926 Clyno royal saloon.

The father-of-three, aged 60, of Causey Farm Road, Halesowen, has owned the car since 1970 and said it was driving “better than ever” following recent running repairs. Kitted out in period dress were Ray Chivers, 68, and wife Sue, 64.

Mother-of-two Sue, from Stourport, said: “It would be a shame not to try and look the part just like the car.”

A set of wheels once raced by former world speed record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell, the Coulter Star Pegasus 1926 Sport, made its debut at the show this year.

And more than 100 classic car pictures were on display for visitors.

The show also featured the museum’s own collection of Black Country cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.
