Dangerous Walsall town driver jailed
Tuesday 28th July 2009, 10:57AM BST.
A drunken wedding guest who drove through Walsall town centre – smashing into another car and almost hitting a police officer – is today behind bars.
Estate agent Andrew Morris, aged 28, swerved through the town centre streets for 10 minutes after binge-drinking, crashing through a road barrier and skipping a red traffic light.
Morris, of Ludlow Close, Willenhall, was arrested after he crashed into another car, injuring its driver, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.
Charnjit Jutla, prosecuting, said: “A police officer on foot spotted a car driving along Lichfield Street erratically, without any lights on.
“The officer stood in the road waving both arms to stop the car and, as the vehicle got 10 metres away from him, he accelerated.
“The officer had to move out of the way.”
He then entered Bridge Street, which was blocked off by a barrier to stop vehicles driving along the street late at night, before travelling along Upper Rushall Street and crashing into another car at about 50mph.
Morris admitted dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen of breath. He was jailed for four months and banned from driving for two years.
