Martin O’Neill is refusing to hit the panic button over Villa’s lack of summer signings.

Zat Knight this weekend became the fourth player to leave Villa, following Gareth Barry, Martin Laursen and Stuart Taylor, but only long-term injury victim Stewart Downing has so far arrived.

O’Neill now finds himself with a squad even smaller than the one he admitted needed beefing up last term, and, with the new Premier League season less than three weeks away, fans are becoming increasingly anxious over the absence of arrivals.

But the Villa chief, who saw his side slip to a 1-0 defeat to Malaga on Saturday, remains calm and has moved to assure supporters it is only a matter of time before he swoops, hinting Knight would not have been allowed to leave had a replacement not already been lined up.

“We are going to obviously improve the team,” said O’Neill. “If we’re going to improve this season then we would want some players in and I expect that to happen.

“We’re a couple of numbers down, but we’d hope to put that right. I wouldn’t be in the habit of letting people go if I didn’t think we could do something.

“I wouldn’t be getting overly concerned at this minute. We have a number of things we are working on and I would hope they’ll bear fruit soon.”

I have to say that the last three paragraphs of this piece do not fill me with confidence for the coming season.

My Maths ain’t that good, but the bit in the second paragraph about being “a couple of numbers down”? Either Martins Maths is worse than mine or he is talking double figures, so maybe there’s another 6 on their way out!

Seriously, there are a number of words in these paragraphs that should set off massive alarm bells among Villa fans. When I here words like If, Would Want, Expect, Hope, Think and Could, there is absolutely nothing positive in this message. Why isn’t he saying When, not If; Need, not Would Want; Will, not Expect, HOPE?????; Know, not Think; Will, not Could!

The last time I heard anything this positive, a bloke called Nero was mucking about with his fiddle, while his arena went up in flames around him!

I’m losing faith by the day!!

Before we lost any of players, we knew that we needed at least 5 additions to the squad. Now we have lost Barry, Laursen, Taylor and Knight, theoretically that is now 9 additions to the squad. I just can’t see that happening to tell the truth!

In all honesty I can see the fans turning against MON because his transfer activity is appauling, his subs are very suspect and he has no plan B!!

It’s just so frustrating because it was the lack of transfers in Jan that cost us fourth place in my opinion.

Whatever happens I am still Villa through and through!!!
