Nenad offers glimpse of future

Nenad Milijas tries a long range effort.

Nenad Milijas tries a long range effort.

Wolves may change formation in the Premier League after boss Mick McCarthy admitted Saturday’s defeat had been a “reality check”.

Although Wolves’ star of the show Nenad Milijas could have had five goals, a strong side looked second best against a Bristol City team who start their season a week earlier than McCarthy’s men.

Wolves looked sluggish against the lively movement of front duo Nicky Maynard and Danny Haynes.

But it was the way they struggled against a three-man central midfield – Bristol City played 3-5-2 – that prompted a rethink by McCarthy on his long-favoured 4-4-2 formation as the Premier League looms.

“I learned something about the shape of our team and how we play,” said the boss.

“In the Premier League, a lot of teams will play with three in the middle of the park and if they do, I think we’ll have to match them up.

“I left it as it was on Saturday to see how we could cope with it, but had we been playing a competitive game I would have changed it straight away.

“It was a reality check for all of us.

“We’re not a Premier League team yet – we’re a team that’s earned the right to play there, and there’s a big difference.

“Hopefully they’ll all be flying by the time we put the team together for the start of the season.”

If and when Wolves look to change things, they appear to have the ideal man to adapt in Milijas.

The Serbian playmaker oozed class on his first appearance on English soil since his £2.6m move from Red Star to suggest he could have a major bearing on Wolves’ fortunes this season.

“Nenad’s an excellent player, and, despite an indifferent performance from us, he still stood out as a very good player,” said McCarthy.

“If we have to play three in central midfield, then he’s fantastic in there (behind a forward).

“He’s very good in that slot further forward, it’s probably his best position. But I thought he played very well in the first half too with Karl Henry in (central) midfield. I don’t know how many attempts on goal he had but I was really pleased with him.”

Wolves struggled for fluency against slicker opponents on the day, perhaps the effects of training. The visitors did have the first chance however, Greg Halford miskicking on the volley from inside the six-yard box from Kevin Foley’s cross.

Halford also headed firmly wide from Milijas’ corner.

And it was the Serbian playmaker who provided Wolves’ best moments of the opening half, seeing a 30-yard drive tipped around the post by keeper Martin Lejsal before his cross-shot sailed wide from 15 yards following the resulting corner.

But the hosts looked more dangerous and they scored twice in five minutes to take a decisive 2-0 lead into the break from which Wolves never recovered.

David Clarkson hit the post from the edge of the area after Stephen Ward was dispossessed, and, after Milijas’s efforts, City took a 33rd minute lead.

Haynes finished confidently with the outside of his right foot after turning Christophe Berra from Maynard’s through ball. All that came following Sylvan Ebanks-Blake giving the ball away.

Haynes was clear again soon after only to lob straight at Wayne Hennessey. City doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Maynard superbly took advantage of the space in front of him to lash a rising right-foot shot into the roof of the net from 30 yards.

Wolves made four changes at the break, introducing Jody Craddock, Richard Stearman, Michael Kightly and Dave Edwards for Bobo Balde, Berra, Halford and Andy Keogh as they went 4-4-1-1, pushing Milijas forward as a support striker to Ebanks-Blake. But the Championship side continued to look sharper. Haynes was denied by a one-handed save from Hennessey after a ball over the top from Jamie McAllister split the defence.

Jamie McCombe should have punished Wolves with a free header six yards out only for Hennessey to prevent a certain goal, before Maynard could only find the side-netting as the angle just beat him.

After each City chance, Wolves responded through Milijas.

The former Red Star Belgrade man saw his first effort deflected wide before his drive was saved at the second attempt by Lejsal, who then clawed away the Serb’s curling free kick. The game died somewhat as a spectacle amid a flurry of 10 substitutions over the last 20-odd minutes.

But Lejsal wasn’t to be beaten and he denied Ward with a falling save before tipping George Friend’s fierce drive over.

I think if we went 3-5-2 it makes it even more vital that we get a quality ball winner in there. Milijas behind Doyle and Ebanks Blake and Henry with a Nolan or even Mancienne could sit infront of the back four. Huddlestone, Aaron Ramsay on loan we have options and this problem needs to be addressed now.

    “reality check” ??
I don’t believe you said that. What are you saying ? You surely don’t think that side is ready for the prem do you ?? We are desperately short of the prem players we were promised.Berra for one will not make the cut.I know you can’t judge too much from friendlies but surely the manager saying he learned something on Saturday suggests he hasn’t learned all that he needed to when his Sunderland team were taken apart week in and week out.Time to wake up and get the players in who will at least give us a fighting chance.
“I learned something about the shape of our team and how we play,” ??
This scares me to death ! Don’t you realise you dictate the shape of our team and the way we play and you shouldn’t be learning anything from playing a friendly against that lot.
Please sign a quality centre half, a left back and another midfielder before the start, i beg you,we don’t want to threaten the record set by Derby.

Get a life Bob Wolf. It’s a pre season friendly! Did you not read what Mick said about testing out the formation and chsnging things if it were a competitive match? Typical of so many Wolves fans…… let’s panic first, criticise the team second, and as a last resort (only if you really have to)apply objective logic!

Looks like Milijas is the only decent player we have sighned the others appear slow and lethargic. It is quite clear that some of the players are not Premiership class. If MM persists in playing the likes of HILL, WARD, KEOGH, CRADDOCK,and doesn’t sort the defence out we are only going to get no where. Time to take a rain check and sort things out MM.

Whilst I wouldn’t want to underestimate the contribution of some of our championship winning side last term I do have to say that I do have concerns that the likes of ward and craddock will just not cut it in the premier league. I don’t want to be seen as a whinger but just think we need to do better especially if we are going to try and stop some of the best strikers in the world! I do trust Mick to sort it but certainly think we need some further work to pave over a couple of obvious cracks in our squad!!! I just hope now terry has committed to Chelsea that mancienne may well find himself squeezed out in our direction!!!!

    3. Slight over-reaction maybe? It’s a pre season friendly. Since when were these ANY indictor whatsoeever of the season ahead? Obviously we’re a better side than Bristol City, as the league table showed and that was before spending 13 million quid. Last pre-season Hull lost 4-0 to Crewe so shut up with the moaning at least until something actually goes wrong.

A very worrying statement by Mick especially as we are so near the start of the season. The current situation reminds me so much of our previous stint in the premiership,ie buying players we had never heard of and then not being ready to play when the season starts.we were told experienced players would be recruited ,they havent. we were told they were attempting to recruit younger players from top clubs on loan, again they havent.

The biggest lesson to learn is that Karl Henry is not good enough and will be overrun. He is very limited as a championship footballer and will be ruthlessly exposed in the prem. It’s a case of how many points will be lost realising this.

Tinker with the formation, but the sooner this is realised the better.

I wonder which of Ebanks and Doyle will be sacrificed for a 4-5-1 formation?

We should not be panicking re these friendly results, however, we need to be looking for another couple of recruits at the very least.
The good news is that Milijas looks like he will not be a Silas or Frankowski and could be an absolute snip. The thing is the next couple of friendlies will not be our strongest team as Balde will be playing for starters. We must give Stearman and Zubar as much time on the pitch as Berra is not up to speed.
Let’s judge after the Real Valloloid fixture, when you are more likely to see a first choice line up minus Doyle, who is hoping to be fit for West Ham!

What a surprise we lost a friendly to a team below us and people are panicking. The team are useless, no ones good enough for the prem and the 3M’s haven’t got a clue. Hopefully they’ll read this and splash 50m on four new players. No manager is ever going to please everyone all the time but McCarthy is the best manager we’ve had in years. He’s proved it from taking a football club with a squad of youth players to a prem team in 3 years. Without spending a’lot of money. I know there’s a’lot of experts out there with vast knowledge and experience but calm down. We need to keep our faith in Mick and back him, he hasn’t let us down yet. I hope we do sign 2 or 3 more players. I think players like halford and surman are good squad additions. 2 or 3 more first team players are needed and I think we’ll do that before the start of the season. Can’t wait for it to start.

I wouldn’t read to much into the game fitness will have played a huge part, but as I’ve said before as have a few others we still need two or 3 signings and need to utilise the loan market. Lauren, Michael Ball and Hamman are still available on free transfers, Mancienne and Ramsay/Wiltshire/Macheda on loan if available. Nenad is a player with promise and should do well in the Premier league. A centrehalf is required and a player that come to mind is Man City Richard Dunne or Mancienne on a season loan, to strengthen the team.

MM and his coaching and supporting staff had done well thus far. Full support should be given to the 3Ms to build a creditable team not only for the season ahead but the seasons to come to establish a Premier team to challenges for honours in soccer fraternity.

    Onwards on the Wolves!!!!!!

There is no point in moaning as pre-season friendlies do not tell us much so dont read into them. It is hard to settle when all players are getting changed.
We lost 2-0 to Bristol City and 2-1 to Port Vale, but look at Newcastle, they lost 6-1 to Leyton Orient.

CMON WOLVES WE WILL DO IT

Idiots on here who are supposedly fans of Wolves are mentioning Derby’s points tally. What are you talking about???
With our starting fixtures we should be able to get 11 points from the first 8 games.
    STOP THE NEGATIVENESS!!!

i hear people asking for facts and objective logic….

yes there is very little logic in reading into a pre season friendly result, e.g our 6-1 loss to morcambe some years back. BUT there is plenty to say about the post match comments again.

Pointless excuses like “bristol had a week longer to prepare than us” really isnt helping micks reputation.

Basically, the point is we have been lied to and conned again by the words of the ‘three m’s’

Wolves as a club were going to learn from the mistakes of 2003. Mick as a manager was going to learn from his mistake with sunderland. and moxey said we were going to spend spend spend to ensure the safety of our club. Mick was going to drop his incescent 24-27 year old filter and get some real premiership experience in?

4 statements which we were fobbed off with as they havent delivered.

    1. We’ve got nobody that has really played in the Premier league for any longer than a season.
    2. We havent signed anyone that we couldnt have bought this time last year.
    3. The money spent is a pittence and oh so similar to the amount Jonah spent 5 years ago.
    4. We continue to be fed that there is no room for ‘big time charlies’ and ‘barrack room lawyers’…
    5. We have merely added to rather than really improved the squad

the major worry for us all is that we will continue to accomodate s.ward, keogh, karl henry at the expense of other, better, more capable players

    Hypocrits??
