New Cross maternity wins award
Saturday 25th July 2009, 10:30AM BST.
A hospital has received an award for the quality of its maternity services – just a few years after the Healthcare Commission ordered more than 100 improvements after three healthy babies died.
Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital was highly commended by a group of MPs and peers for improvements being made on its maternity wards.
A training DVD depicting childbirth using a birthing pool used by doctors, midwives and support staff at the Wednesfield Road hospital received an award.
It comes after a report by the Healthcare Commission in 2003 ordered 110 improvements at the hospital following the three deaths, including little Trinity Reynolds whose parents live in Bushbury.
The baby suffocated in her mother’s womb in March 2003 after a series of mistakes by staff. There were also two other needless deaths of healthy babies at New Cross between January and March 2003.
The New Cross team received their award at a summer reception at the Houses of Parliament by the all-party parliamentary group on maternity.
National Childbirth Tru-st’s Mary Newburn, said: “It’s an excellent example of the good work in local trusts and what can be achieved through committed staff and innovation in services.”

I still wouldn’t go near it with a ten foot pole. The memories of the brutal squalor, apathy and indefference there will remain forever.

As a previous patient of new cross maternity unit, I am shocked to discover that the unit has recieved such an award. I was treated in a mannor that was anything but award winning, I had such a bad experience there that I have decided to change hospitals midway through my pregnancy. And my case is not the only one that I know of where a patient has been ill treated whilst in the care of the maternity unit, I am honestly baffled as to how the place has been given an award and I do not think it is at all diserved.

I gave birth in New Cross 20 weeks ago. My experience of the Maternity care and ward left a lot to be desired. The room I was in was covered in dust and was either too hot or too cold. There was an alarm in all rooms that were constanly going off. The staff admitted making a number of mistakes. If this is an improvement I dread to think of what it was like before.

My partner gave birth to our daughter at New Cross on Christmas day last year. I have nothing but praise for the fabulous staff within the maternity unit. Whilst the facilities are outdated the staff really are a credit to the hospital.
Our first child was born at Russells Hall primarily because of the report a few years back. Russells Hall facilities are good but in my opinion the staff aren’t a patch of those at New Cross.
Really pleased to see that their hard work has been recognised.

I gave birth to my only child there in 2005. Both myself and my daughter nearly died because of a doctors error. The first midwife I saw on the delivery suite noticed the problem straight away, but the so called doctor decided to leave me for 36 hours!
The electronic tag that my daughter had to wear was never activated, so anybody could have took her.
I never recieved an apology and when I have another child, I will not go there again!
