Drivers’ danger island victory
Saturday 25th July 2009, 11:10AM BST.
A road island created in preparation for Bilston’s £176 million urban village development will definitely be ripped out after a campaign by motorists.
A new roundabout scheme will now be laid near Morrisons supermarket following claims that the current pear-shaped island is dangerous and ill-thought out.
Protesters spent months demanding action.
People travelling from Bradley trying to get to the supermarket currently have to turn off from the small island, get onto the main Black Country Route in the opposite direction to the store and turn back on themselves around another ring road to get to the same point.
But shoppers are illegally travelling straight over the island instead of making the extra journey, putting themselves at risk of a collision.
After weeks of “monitoring and reviewing” the site, highways bosses announced that they had agreed the island should be ripped out and replaced with a conventional roundabout, allowing drivers to travel straight over to the supermarket safely.
Today, it emerged that the scheme has been given the final seal of approval by regeneration and enterprise councillor Paddy Bradley.
It is not yet known when the project will start.

common sense prevails at last

There’s NOT actually anything saying you can’t go around the island and straight into Morrison’s anyway – so how can it be ‘illegal’???
I just thought it was a stupid shape…..
