Mick admits failure in his Premier hunt

Friday 24th July 2009, 11:10AM BST.

WOLVES 3 EB 17Mick McCarthy today revealed Wolves couldn’t recruit the Premier League experience they wanted – but believes Nenad Milijas and Ronald Zubar will make up for it.

The Wolves boss went on record at the end of last season to say it was vital to strengthen with players with experience of the English top flight.

But of the six summer signings that have cost a relatively modest £15m, only Kevin Doyle and Marcus Hahnemann have played extensively in the Premier League, while Greg Halford has had 11 top flight games for Sunderland and Reading.

“It’s just the way it’s worked out,” said boss McCarthy.

“We’ve tried to get as much experience as we can with the ones we’ve got and I think we’ve done well.

“I could argue Greg Halford has Premier League experience but I’m not going to be pedantic.

“It’s sometimes not possible to get 24-27-year-olds who have done it in the Premier League. We couldn’t do it.”

But McCarthy believes Zubar, 23, and 26-year-old Milijas in particular will prove huge hits for Wolves in the Premier League.

Both have played in the top leagues in their native France and Serbia, and in European competition.

“We’ve got Nenad, who’s a top class international footballer,” said the boss.

Contrary to reports, Wolves say they have no interest in Celtic centre-back Steven McManus.

McCarthy is keen to recruit another central defender and has McManus’ former Hoops team-mate Bobo Balde on trial.

That trial period is due to end after the game against Bristol City tomorrow. Wolves’ younger players are at Hereford. Both matches kick-off at 3pm.

* Wolves were today linked with a move for unsettled Espanyol’s former Liverpool right-back Steve Finnan, along with Sunderland and Stoke.

Before the usual suspects start crying, whining, hating everything about Mick blah blah blah! Why don’t you all just sit back and view what is going on in the big wide world before slagging off how they are not spending money and find all this premier experience.

    1. I renewed my ticket at the early bird price but this is the credit crunch people can’t afford to spend the money, clubs have seriously been affected by this up and down the country, not many teams have made many big signings.

    3. If you actually sit back and look at the bigger picture there are not many players floating around who we could potentially sign with premier experience and who are actually good player….

Final thought, I for one look at life more positively and glad we are in top tier after so long, I hope we will do well but it is not really the end of the world if we don’t…

Would of liked to see one or two more experienced players arrive, to add a little composure and know how, but im quietly confident that the young crop of players we have at our disposal will do a good job. Its not all about exerience now, fitness is the most crucial compnent in recent years, and no amount of experience is going to prevent you from being run circles round if you havent the legs. Well he didn’t do alot for newcastle and if we did get relegated next year I think everybody around the club would like us not to have 60,000 a week free loaders playing for us in the championship. Not to mention the fact it would cause alot of un rest in the squad with the rest of the players who are on a fraction of the wage. No what annoys me is that Moxey made the statement just after the QPR that we have analysed why teams don’t stay up and we won’t make the same mistakes and he actually quoted the Albion at only spending 19 million. I would have no objection if he would have come out and said this is our policy and he would get my full support. But now you ask did he lye to increase season ticket sales he must have known. We all stick together no problem i just hate spin, we have enough in politics.

I am a realist i will hope and prey we do well but with a completely unknown team going in the FACTS tell us they usually get relegated.

We are still in a better position than Burnley, Blues, Hull and I would suggest that Portsmouth, Wigan and Blackburn may struggle.

In times of a credit crunch wouldn’t it have been more prudent to price the season tickets realistically rather than making us the 3rd most expensive team in the league to buy a season ticket for. Our season tickets… ignoring all the early birds, are more expensive than Man Utd and Liverpool…how does that work. Almost every position has 2 players competing for a place, I repeat, almost, before everybody highlights the obvious need for competion in a few slots.

There are plenty of players available on a free.

We dont have to break the wage structure, but we could pay some decent money for some Premiership quality. We could always put in a “relegation-release clause” or a wage cut in case of relegation.

After all, we are Premiership now, yet our wage budget still seems to be Championship level..

This is a list of players that we could realistically have been getting on a free:

    Hamann
    Michael Ball
    Darius Vassall
    Peter Lovenkrands
    Mark Viduka

Keogh needs to start every game if we are going to have a chance of survival. Explain why you think it is a ‘weak statement’ from MM.
Personally, I think he is just being very honest about the situation instead of just either saying nothing or fabricating an answer.
Bottom line is that if a player doesn’t want to join Wolves, you can’t force them, and despite what we think of our great club, realistically experienced players will want more security than a club that has only just been promoted.
You will notice that he says ‘experienced Prem players 24 – 27′ which indicates that we have tried to get the younger experienced players, carrying on the recent club policy on recruitment.
You may also notice that Kites in another article has said that the new arrivals have gelled quickly with the rest of the team. This is clearly a major factor in selecting targets – making sure the morale in the team is maintained and not disrupted.
    Gets my vote.
If you are facing a relegation dogfight, which we may well do, the last thing you need is overpaid, disruptive characters not willing to fight for each other – just look at Newcastle for that scenario.

It’s a bit of a gamble though Mick.

Apart from the start of last season, we hardly set the world alight. We lost twice to Reading, took one point from 6 from Blues. We did a fantastic job against the sides we should have beaten (except Naarwich) – which was the main reason we won the league. We were also outclassed by Middlesborough in the cup.

I know the young and hungry players should kick on a bit and improve but obviously not all of them will and some out of Henners/Foley/Berra/Stearman/Elokobi/Kightly/
Jarvis/Ward/Keogh/Surman/Halford/Henry will find the step up too much. So with the current squad as it is, I do worry that we won’t be strong enough to cope.

I appreciate that there’s still plenty of time left before the window closes and we still jhave loan signings avaiable to us. The transfer window has been pretty quiet so far whilst at least any potential targets will be doing pre-season at their clubs – so apart from ‘team-bonding’ we ain’t missing out on a lot. But as I said, I do have my reservations that we haven’t strengthened as much as we needed to – and are maybe a little carried away with the fact we won the league convincingly in the end.

Fingers crossed we see at least a couple more deals before the window closes.

You do not win a league in your first proper stab, if you are not a talented team and the youngsters, I mean Kites, Ebanks, Jarvis, Henessy, Foley, Vokes to name but a few being the core. They may potentially be better than the 50,000k p/week players some of you guys would feel more comfortable in the Prem with.

This team has un earthed potential, they may well surpass all the nervous expectations most fans have.

Its a very exciting time, and I would sooner support a club with players who break their backs to play, rather than a bunch of average ability mercenaries that blight the very over-rated Premier league.

Wolves fans, if you have the Wolves History DVD,
Look at when David Coleman Asks Stan Cullis “What do you
put down to Wolves Success”. Cullis reply,s “Young
Lads, who want to play for Wolves, and if they D,ont they are out the door.” Sound advise from
a Manager who won a few things!!!!

IF you have concerns there is no point in waiting until Sept, because it will be too late by then.Let’s face it we knew we were facing relegation last time within 30 minutes of our first home match.Four down to Charlton after a 5 goal pounding away at Blackburn. We are facing a crucial season in our history. If we fail it will be 4 relegations out of our last 4 seasons in top flight football,we will be well and truly labelled a second tier football club. Alternatively there is a glimmer of a chance that we might survive. There are about 8 clubs this season who could get relegated . We must not waste this opportunity.People come on here and say if we spent a lot of money we could end up in debt. But equally it might succeed. There’s a thought for the happy clappers, perhaps they don’t want success.

I too have to agree its more probably we wont pay the money rather than the players are not there to spend it on,.. I agree with most,…we need one more quality player in defence, midfield and up front, but i dont with we will get them, and as someone has said we have the Xmas window, but it could be too late by then

some people just havent got a clue! phillip neville…not even gonna waste my time explaining why thats not gonna happen, kevin nolan…on massive wages and a long contract so he wouldnt be coming ere. would these people who are complaining about lack of prem experience please put forward names of players who are 1) genuinely gonna come here, 2)good enough to play premiership football…ie no thanks alan smith! and i bet its the same people complaining about morgan not paying top wages, that would also slate moxeys handling of finances if, god forbid, we were relegated at the end of next season, with unsellable players on top whack wages, leaving our club with no financial stability! get real!

65 – The difference was in the 50s all the players were Brits only, we didn’t have to contend with other clubs possessing a Torres or Tevez, and the clubs all existed on a (relatively) equal financial footing with no TV money and global branding. If only it was still that simple…

We need a quality creative centre midfielder which
was missing last season jones was the closest thing we had, which showed because our form went downhill when he was out the team!

Not sure on this arguement, allthough i am swaying along the lines that we will get beat most weeks. On the other hand, Hennessey, Foley, kites, EB, Doyle, Milijas and Surman have been chased by other Prem clubs. Any get injured though and what back up do we have. Still think that we have 2 or 3 to come in, and if thats the case we will be allright.
For me it will be Pompy, Burnley and Blues down. Keep some money for Jan window guys we just might need it.

Amazing how these statements of the club are made now we have sold 20,000 season tickets. To fans sold down the river once more.Plain fact is, we never wanted to pay for the PL experience, so, as usual, the fans have to make do with second best. With Doyle injured, Milijas in doubt, and the mistake prone Zubar at the back…what’s different to last year? Relegatoion fodder again, the best chance ever of staying up is wasted.

Spot on Mick…no signs of weakness from the man in the know here. We all knew & didn’t want last paycheck charlies like we had before. Its obvious the 3M’s have been searching the 24-27yrs age group as investments. We can all berate the management regarding broken promises, however I feel they have definitely bought for our future with the signings made thus far. Many contributions on here have slated Steve Morgan for the purchase not made of “the player he has admired for a long time”. I’ve said previously on here this would have been Michael Owen but when Man Utd came knocking the door it was obvious which club Michael would choose. Whenever we have done business this pre-season it has been done behind closed door & we have benefited greatly from our business acumen. The only blight was James McCarthy & this was only because ‘knucklehead’ Willie McKay was involved in the transfer activity. Jez should have pulled the pin as soon as he started touting. I have great faith in who we have signed. Surman, Halford great stamina, Milijas great skill. Zuber will come good. I also believe Keogh will shine this season, Dave Edwards is another powerhouse in midfield. Dave Jones cultered left foot. Kightly & Jarvo down the wings for our deadly duo of Seb & Doyle. What a season in store for us all. The 3m’s are still working behind the scenes on further signings guaranteed. COME ON WOLVES FANS GET BEHIND THE MANAGMENT & MORE IMPORTANTLY OUR YOUNG, STRONG & HUNGRY TEAM.

Come on, if we don’t buy premier experience then we are screwed. I mean since when has buying championship and lower league talent worked for anybody.

I mean, Cahill, Lescott, Andy Johnson, Emile Heskey, Steve Finnan, Tom Huddlestone, Curtis Davis, Ashley Young, Gareth BAines, Kenwyne Jones,Jason Kumas, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon, Robert Green, Mathew Upson, Brown from Sheff UTD, Dean Whitehead, Rory Delap, and any more you would like to mention have all been useless.

It is not as if these are established premier players. I mean some of them have only played in the champions league.

Players from the lower leagues doe’s not work, the facts speak for themselves!!!

Its now time for the realisation factor, Mccarthy isnt good enough, look at his CV is shows all the proof. Also Moxey cant attract or offer a good enough deal to seal deal for the kid from Hamilton but i suppose his hand are tied by the big boss(he chose Wigan over Wolves) because thats ambition!!! And finally Morgan, I know, lets come out and publicly say (we will be a forse in the prem) is he that stupid? There noone more than me wants us to stay up, but do u realy think we have a chance? Yes we do a small chance only because there will be a number a poor teams in the bottom half this year. Money Talks Morgan!! SPLASH THAT CASH QUICKLY because if you dont asking a team with an average age of under 24 to keep us up is a very big task!!! Yes i agree they may be good enough but get some experience at the back and a ball winner in midfield, if we dont we will regret it!!

We only lost to Reading at our ground because Collins played rubbish along with Hennessey. It was a bad night defensively for us. However, our midfield etc that night was fine, just our defence got outclassed. Don’t forget Keogh had a header cleared off the line, a 1v1 saved. At their place, they yet again had their full squad on and Collins scored an own goal. Apart from that they didn’t have any other chances. We missed an open goal if I remember, and that was us playing defensive with Quashie and Henry in midfield. Birmingham home we could have gone on to win it. I think that we we’re the better team that day and that was against a full strength Blues squad too. At their ground, we had no SEB, Kightly, our 2 main players, and we expected to lose, even though our performance wasn’t even that bad, it was just 2 mistakes. I think that with the team we have now we’ll do really well in the Premier League. We’ve certainly got a better squad than Birmingham and Burnley IMO. I think Hennessey will be very commanding next season and turn out to be a great keeper. Foley, Kightly, Ebanks-Blake, Surman and Karl Henry will also stand out next season, and Doyle, Milijas and Zubar will turn out to be quality signings. Just hope we can get Mancienne in on loan and someone to back up Karl Henry if he gets injured, and another striker for back up. If we get Mancienne we’ll finish around 13th. This is my line up…

    Hennessey
    Foley Mancienne Zubar Elokobi
    Kightly Henry Surman
    Milijas
    Doyle Ebanks-Blake

Oh yeah and when we played Middlesbrough at home we didn’t even get outclassed :S If Jarvis wouldn’t have missed that open goal we would have drawn or even won. They played a strong side, and we didn’t even have a good team on. We had no Foley, Kightly or Ebanks-Blake until the last minute. We had Collins and Shackell at the back, and we still gave them a really good game. We’ll be fine!

The Bristol City result suggests that we are in for a long painful season. I’m afraid the signings we have made are in the ‘good championship’ bracket and not of the quality required. Disappoints me to say it but I expect we will become the next yo-yo club with the players we are signing.

24 laughingwolf, it’s all very well saying we need players like Nolan, but are these players going to come to us? Everton are an established Premiership club who regularly finish at the top end of the prem, so they can attract decent players. All you lot need to be realistic, 17th should be our aim, anything else is a bonus.
