Cech’s future still in balance
Friday 24th July 2009, 1:11PM BST.
Albion defender Marek Cech today insisted his future is still in the balance.
The Slovakia international, who is the club’s only senior left-back, said his future is still in the air despite Albion’s desire to keep him.
Albion have made it clear they have no intention of selling the former Porto man but he says he is still planning talks on his future.
“At this moment we are discussing things about me and we will see in the next few days how things are with my future
“I cannot say now whether I will stay or go because everything will be discussed and we will see in the next few days.
“The new gaffer is okay and I think he could help me this season, but we will see how it is.
“It is also good for me that Paul (Robinson) has gone to Bolton because I could have a free place, so maybe it would be good for me to stay and play all the games.
“But for sure I need to play because we are having a good time with the national team.
“We are first in the (qualifying) group and we are very close to getting to the World Cup, which is why I don’t want to lose my position in the national team.”
Cech has two years remaining on his contract, plus a further year’s option in the club’s favour.
But he says he would still prefer to be in a top-tier league for the sake of his international career.
Cech said: “I would like to play in the top leagues all the time but now we are in the second league and I have a contract with West Brom so we will see what decision is made.
“I will behave professionally. I am a player who has always been professional but I need to consider everything in my mind.”
Cech made it clear last season that he wanted to move on and his agent this week linked him with Celtic and Dutch side FC Twente.
