Albion reject £4m Greening bid

Friday 24th July 2009, 11:15AM BST.

ALBION 15 DH 21Albion today rejected a £4m bid from Fulham for Jonathan Greening – as former boss Tony Mowbray scuppered their swoop for Daniel Fox.

The Baggies turned down a third Cottagers offer for the 30-year-old skipper as they continued to play hardball with the London club.

The decision follows the rejection of an opening £2m cash-plus-player bid and a second straight cash offer of £3.25m.

Meanwhile, Albion were today set to fail in a £2m swoop for Coventry full-back Fox – thanks to Mowbray.

Mowbray’s Celtic were set to pip the Baggies to the signing of the former Walsall full-back after both clubs made similar bids. Albion, Celtic and Nottingham Forest all offered around £2m up front plus performances-related add-ons for the 23-year-old.

All three clubs were close to striking deals with the Sky Blues, but Celtic forced the transfer through last night after Fox made it clear he had chosen to taste Champions League football with the Bhoys.

Walsall stand to pocket a sizeable windfall from a sell-on clause they negotiated when Fox moved to the Ricoh Arena. It leaves Albion now turning to alternative targets to replace the departed Paul Robinson.

Marek Cech remains the club’s only senior left-back and the Slovakia international today insisted his future is still in the air despite Albion’s desire to keep him. Albion have made it clear they have no intention of selling the former Porto man, but he says he is still planning talks on his future.

“At this moment we are discussing things about me and we will see in the next few days how things are with my future,” he said.

“I cannot say now whether I will stay or go because everything will be discussed and we will see in the next few days.”

The loss of Greening will be a disaster for the club. The core of the 2007-2008 Championship side Greening, Phillips, Gera will have gone. Am I the only person who thinks we are weaker now than last time around in the Championship?

I wonder what JP valuation is of Greening?
My valuation would have been £4million, and i would probably have said had we sold him for that amount that JP had negotiated a good deal for a 30 year old.
Surely they will not pay more than £4million??

What you need to remember is that JP is NOT trying to sell Greening – he wants to keep him & Greening has said if he doesn’t go then he will knuckle down and do his best.

On that basis why sell him unless its silly money ??

Foreget what he’s worth in cash – what is he worth to US on the pitch this season ??

Fulham want him and we don’t want to sell him – therefore lets get as much as possible – or keep him.

From a personal point of view, i dont want them to pay more than four million for him, in other words i would like him to remain at the club.

There seems to be a lot made of his age, a doddering 30 year old, give over, the bloke looks better with age, and i ask you this.
To replace a player of JG`s undoubted quality, presence, tactical nous, passing range, with a big heart for the fight……..how much do you think it cost ?

Dont get me wrong i would prefer JG to stay, but if he wants to go i want as much money as poss to invest in other areas of the squad. Also our midfield is heavy in terms of numbers currently and the money would allow us to go and buy another striker which i believe is our biggest requiremnet at the moment.

surely albion are now just pricing him out of a move, i think we should let him go for that amount, i mean let him have another crack at the prem. we have too many mid-fielders anyway, and give the armband to koren or olsson and we could sign maybe a left back and center back for that???

Let’s just look at this from another angle.
Jonno is the very sort of player we would be looking for (if we didn’t have him) when we get back to the Prem – God willing!
What would we have to pay for a player like him?
Even tho’ he is 30, he has three years left in him at the top level at least.
An equivalent player of Prem quality would cost us around 6 million plus much more in terms of weekly wage and signing on fee AND no real committment to the club. There is also now the added perception of WBA that we are content to be a yo yo club and Prem quality players won’t come to us if they think we will not strengthen the team and do everything to stay up.
We need Jonno, NOT the money to get us through this season and back to the Premiership and then add other Prem quality players to play alongside him if we can get them!
The CCC will be much harder if we lose him.

    5) Spot on! I think the question is not so much how much is Greening worth (personally i’d agree that 4mill for someone 30 is a good deal), but how much would it cost to replace someone of his quality, and thats alot more. I also suspect if JP had someone lined up to come straight in and replace Greening then JP would probably have accepted the deal.

I really hope he stays as he is a different class in this division.

I still think Jonno will be a Fulham player by the start of the season – we will either get silly money for him – or there is a player that RDM wants from Fulham that they don’t wanna let go…..

Wba have turned down a 4 mill bid from Fulham for Greening. 3.25 or 4 mill, I think it shows what a well runn club we are. I not sure whats best for the club, take the money or keep him, but just the fact that we can decide our self is great credit to JP. Also i`m to far away from it all to say if JP is good or bad for the club, but from what I have seen on all the different pages on the internet, I´ll say well done JP. On a sporting matter I hope Luke Moore will start to pay of, and also that we will forgive Bednar, as I think everybody deserves a second chance, and that he can ( and will if given a chance ) do a great job for us in this division. Also think the likes of Kim, Valero and Tex could shine on this level. Still need a CB though. All in all I think we can look forward to a very interessting season. Danish Baggie

Ok £4 mill is a fair offer but I agree that if we dont wanna sell him, why should we. He would be a HUGE loss. The problem is, I know that JG said he would knuckle down & be happy 2 stay, but I am worried if we keep rejecting these offers JG will be frustrated & are preventing him from moving.

Although I personally think he should be flattered he is worth that much 2 us. Like I said before Jesus has the chance 2 become a legend here if he were 2 stick out the rest of his career here.

This might sound strange & unpopular, and I myslef didnt like his attitude or the way he left the club. But what about £4million plus Diomansy Kamara??
Would sort out our striker problem. He along with Miller, Moore, Cox = A formidable strike force!

Fair play to JP – if he can get more than £4m for the forward-pass-fearing Greening then fair play!

As for the “how much would it cost us to replace him” question – not a lot really. He’s slow, can’t shoot, has limited creativity and doesn’t really seem to have ‘a position’.

Mulumbu will fill the defensive role, Koren the more advanced role, and Mogga and Brunt on either plank.
We’ve also got Valero who IMO is a much better prospect in the Prem than Jesus (and younger), and Tex, and Kim, and the kids amongst others.

He wouldn’t be missed – it’s just how much money we can extract from the Greed League.

From his viewpoint, he would probably be better off at Fulham, playing Premiership & earning more money (who can blame him for wishing to leave) BUT the Club is better off to keep him … his skills would provide a serious shortfall in midfield & difficult to replace … hope he stays but fear the worst !!!

The game we love is made so by different opinions, but usually there is a little common ground, as is the case here we both want success for our club, but i dont think i have EVER had such polar opinion before with someone regarding a single players merits……..or indeed de-merits as you see it.

I don’t always agree with you but I think you’re spot on here. Greening doesn’t rely on his pace any more. As someone, I think it was Happy pointed out previously, his build means he doesn’t suffer strain injuries in fact he’s had very few injuries. Like Strachan and Gary Mcallister I believe he will play on into his late thirties and keep getting better (a lot of football is what’s in your head as much as your feet.) Because of this I agree that he’s worth a hell of a lot to us. Can’t see any swap deals due to wages but AJ is a very tempting thought.
PS What happened to Woy’s repeated stances of ‘we’ve made a very fair offer and won’t be paying more.’

RBH, I’m slightly sulky. I’ve been batting on about Greening being of slight build and playing at top level for 4 or 5 years. I suppose I’ll forgive you though as Happy is good too. Terry, I can assure you Jodie likes her bit of Danish served with red sauce for her breakfast, don’t you sweetie-pie? Question: If we were offered a Prem top quality player for a 4 or 5 year contract, how much would we expect to pay? £6m? More? Of course we would. I want Jonno to stay and be a legend. Maybe never to replace Ray Barlow in my personal list of half-backs, (midfielders for you kids), but he’s a good un we should all be proud of and has handled himself well in all of this. I’ve just seen a rumour that Mo’N is after Jonno for Villa! Now THAT does worry me.
