Wolves step up new striker search

Thursday 23rd July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

PORT VALE V WOLVES 4 GD 22Wolves have stepped up their efforts to sign a striker before the transfer window shuts next month.

Manager Mick McCarthy remains confident £6.5m club record signing Kevin Doyle will be fit during August after his hernia operation, but with Chris Iwelumo out for three months with a broken foot, he wants his options covered.

The boss said: “We’re looking at trying to strengthen. We’ve not got the biggest squad.

“We’ve still got Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes and I’m sure Doyle will be back before the start of the season.

“Doyle will be training in a fortnight, but I’m still looking at whatever’s around.

“It would be nice to do something and we certainly want four strikers fit for the start of the season.

“We’ve got a good squad, but we can’t sign anyone once the transfer window shuts – that’s our lot until Christmas.

“At the end of last season, we had loads of strikers and then suddenly they were falling like flies. We lost Michael Kightly, Chris and Sylvan and we had to loan someone.

“We won’t have that facility available this time.”

McCarthy admits it’s unlikely he will make any immediate inroads.

He added: “We’re getting a lot of players offered, many of whom I don’t know anything about, because we can’t watch everyone around the world.”

The Wolves chief insists the club took a long-term view on Doyle, knowing he may miss the start of the season.

He said; “There was no point him limping on and playing at 85 per cent for six weeks, then him having it (surgery) and taking longer.

“As soon as we knew it was a hernia, it was a case of getting it done and if he had to miss the first week, he misses it.”

I re-read the comments from the end of the 2007-08 season, it was pathetic! If you don’t like what’s going on, tough! The vast majority of us think they’re doing a very good job in an incredibly difficult market. I’m impressed they’ve got most of their shopping done and looking to be flexible too. If you’re still feeling negative perhaps you should look at the likes of the noses, hull and burnley, before nagging away.

Keep going 3Ms, right behind the club, UTW!

It is a little disconcerting that no experienced Premiership players have been signed especially in the midfield area. The Club claims to have money available so what is the problem? To date, the Club has really not spent much money at all.

“Young and hungry” is all well and good but mistakes by inexperienced players will be severely punished at the Premiership level no matter how hard the squad works.

In my opinion we need five more players before the window shuts.
Another winger, ball winning central midfielder as we only currently have Henry, centre back, left back and of course another striker.
We should try and get Duff or Gutierrez from Newcastle or maybe even Victor Moses who can play on the wing or upfront. Someone like Michael Ball would be a decent signing for left back and he is currently on a free. For central midfield maybe Ndiaw and centre back hopefully Mancienne.
Make no mistake further strengthening of the squad is certainly required as opnce the deadline passes we cant even sign players on loan plus we have seven subs this season.

By the way, will anyone stop mentioning Mark Viduka? Far too slow! Far too old and on far too much money! It’s a well known fact that any game watched on Match of the Day last season that featured Newcastle, you can see clearly that the man has not raised a sweat in about fifteen seasons! He puts no effort in and yes he does get the occasional poachers goal, but that’s no where near enough.

He couldn’t (didn’t want) pull it out and slog for Newcastle, when they really needed players of experience to rise up and show the way, why on earth do people think he could do it for us?

We were told by Moxey that they had done an in depth analysis on why promoted teams dont stay up after being promoted and he made the statement that we would not make those mistakes.

I therefore challenge you that this was more spin, we have signed some decent players and if i were going into a championship season i would be very excited but we are not. 99% of the squad has no premier experience so we do not know how they will perform but my argument is history tells us that you buy cheap you end up being relegated. Where is the stategy Stoke purchased 4 experienced premiership performers last year, the Albion purchased zero.

I also want them to succeed but i can only look at the signings and say fringe players for the premier.

Even the likes of manchester united and chelsea get turned down, so a team that has just gotten promoted is going to have a tough time. Lets get things in perspective a little, talk of signing 5 more players is ridiculous. As Reading, Hull etc have shown it is not about the individuals you have but the sum that they produce as a team. There were teams queueing up to go down last season. Mick wants one more striker as cover. So we are not going to pay silly money of transfer fee or wages. One more target man maybe as SEB and Doyle are not giants. Be sensible most of you. We all know we need strengthening but signing 6, 7 or more players is stupid, it is not going to happen!
As for suggesting we need another left back – how many more do we need, we must have at least 6 already!
As I said in an earlier post, get real and use some sensibility when posting messages about potential signings.
Mick McCarthy & co. are not going to blow umpteen millions on has-beens over 30yo nor will they sign players just for the sake of it.
They will only sign players who are committed to the old gold and black and to the future of the club, which means players who have been around the block umpteen times can forget any chance of coming to Molineux – just ask Mick!

Our signings so far have been excellent considering the players in our target market (were people expecting to see Ronaldo in a Wolves shirt?) and there are still more to come.

The 3 Ms have stuck to their word so far and spent what appears to be wisely. Time will tell how wisely. Do people want to see us spending close to £10mil on unproven Mexican players like the Blouses?

We’ll get the striker in, the defence hasn’t finished being built yet and I’m sure we’ll get another midfielder in as well. But I’m not worried, the guys who got us up deserve their chance too.

74… couldnt agree more. Our team deserves a chance at playing in the premiership, and i suspect their will be one or two suprise packeages, whilst playing in the prem. I think keogh will be one of theose suprise packages. All he needs to do is improve his shooting and he could be an excellent backup to our current strikers. Our young squad is only going to improve, birminghams on the other hand…?

Wolves have only made 1 signing this summer that has turned a few heads in the Prem and thats Doyle.
It’s about time we had a couple of ‘names’ in the squad.
We all presumed high profile signings would be made so we could at least compete in this league, non have been made to-date.
I am not having a go but some people really do need a reality check, we are going to struggle there are no two-ways about it unless the 3Ms put there money where their mouth is.
Nothing of quality will be willing to sign in the January window, so if it is not done in the next 2 weeks dont iron them triangles on your shirt sleeves to well, they will have to be peeled off come next May!!

If mick buys another striker, lets hope its not a budget signing, and that they actually get the wallet out like they did with Doyle, another quality front man only means competition for places, which can’t be a bad thing, i know we have Keogh, a good utility player, but he just does not put enough in the net. Voke’s will get there, but is not the finished article yet, and is not ready for a staring role.

I was addressing those negative commentators, whatever number that is. I feel their comments are too strong. Perhaps I am being too hopeful, in that I could only believe there would be a few thinking the job hasn’t been good enough. Like I said, when you compare it to those teams in a similar market, our management are way ahead and top of the class! I believe we will stay up because of their hard work. We also need the fans to support them as well as the team. It’s sad that these boards seem to express the polarised views and opinions, the one’s that are over the top both ways, when what we all need is to be realistic in our debates. Let’s not hit the panic buttons yet please.

And on a personal note, Wolves are now offering £40 cashback for anyone recommending a friend for a season ticket,…maybe if they hadnt been greedy in the 1st place and put prices up in the middle of a deep recession we would have already sold them all,…we are the only club I know to who have increased prices completely across the board, absolute disgrace!.

Now is the time to be shrewd, we need a striker but dont want to put the club under financial pressure- Benjani on loan (man city subsidising half his wages) we need a quality central midfielder Michael Johnson (nearly moved to newcastle -young and hungry!) Tottenham have a massive squad and are now starting to move in the transfer market Alan Hutton – loan or Gareth Bale.

As for the Premiership being stronger absolute garbage. Apart from the big 4 and now you can through Man City in the equation, a very poor Premiership last season. Villa got into Europe, yet have won only 2 games in 2009. Fulham are not European class but have qualified. Spurs on their day can be good but the rest are mediocre and we are well capable of taking points off them, especially at home!

If you are going to comment on what I said then at least talk some sence BrummiwWolves

The premiership is alot harder than last time we were there. You are obviously sucked on the idea that Newcastle & boro getting relegated will make our task in staying up easier. Then you are a bigger fool then ever.

The premier is by far a bigger fish to fry then last time, if you remember we went down on goal difference, 33 points along with leicester and leeds which tells me if we had the rub of the green then who knows. But since then teams are by far more established so we should be thinking of trying to stay up, rather than the notion that the top 4, plus everton, villa, mancity and spurs and the rest as you say is poor is to me complete arrogance from your part and further more, you will realise that the pace of the premiership is by far fanatic then the last time. Hull and Stoke stayed up because they were good enough to stay up. END OF!

wolves could do with selling ebanks-blake, to raise money for a new style defender, just a thought but lets try and get David May, i heard he is looking for a new club, and he has bags of experience if I’m honest. also MANCIENNE is getting on abit now, so i wouldn’t like to risk that signing.

Keogh needs to start every game if we are going to have a chance of survival. I went to one game last year and I thought that the team needs a complete clear out, Thomaz Frankowski would fit the bill, Hoddle was right bringing him to Molineux but the fans as always got on his back, him and Keogh upfront guarantee goals every season.
