Foley backs Zubar to adapt quickly
Thursday 23rd July 2009, 9:59AM BST.
Wolves’ new boy Ronald Zubar admits he’s finding the English game “quick” – but team-mate Kevin Foley insists the Frenchman will adjust in time for the Premier League.
Zubar continued his introduction to British football with 90 minutes in last night’s 2-1 defeat at Port Vale, to follow his hour against Perth Glory and full game against North Queensland Fury in Australia.
Foley believes the Marseille signing is adapting well.
He said: “Ronald just said to me afterwards how the game was quick and, even though it was a friendly, I think the game over here is probably the quickest there is.
“It will probably be a little bit slower when we get into the Premier League and we’ll all have to adapt.
“The more games Ronald plays the better he’ll adapt, but I thought he did well last night.
“He looked quick and strong for what was his first 90 minutes for us and will no doubt settle in even more as the games continue.”
Wolves played arguably their strongest back four at Vale Park, with Zubar playing alongside Christophe Berra with George Elokobi at left-back, with all four getting the full 90 minutes.
Despite the setback, Foley believes the players are gradually coming to the boil in terms of fitness and sharpness.
He said: “It was another good workout to keep the fitness building up.
“We were disappointed about the result, but the main thing is we were getting back to working hard, closing down and continuing to step things up, as we carry on towards the start of the season.
“The gaffer was happy with the workrate, because it’s always tough when you get your first 90 minutes in, but it was a good taster for what’s to come.
“It all contributes to our pre-season work.
“We’ve got a day off today which will be good for the recovery and then it’s back in tomorrow, to prepare for another tough game down at Bristol City.
“We’ve got a good few games coming up against good quality teams and we’ll all be looking to get as many minutes as possible, so we’re as well prepared as possible for when the season starts.”
Foley was also full of praise for Academy players Daniel Wright – who made a surprise senior debut in goal with Carl Ikeme and Marcus Hahnemann nursing slight injuries – Ashley Hemmings and 16-year-old James Spray.
The right-back said: “Daniel was called in late on but came in and did brilliantly, as did James when he came on up front.
“He was superb for such a young lad, holding the ball up well and not being afraid to get stuck in.
“You could be looking at a couple of first team players of the future there.
“That’s another good part of pre-season, when it offers the chance for young players to get some experience and they’ll have done themselves no harm.
“If they carry on like that, with the right attitude, I’m sure they’ll have a bright future.”
