Cygnet injured by shot in head
Thursday 23rd July 2009, 4:36PM BST.
A young swan has been shot through the head with an air rifle at a Dudley beauty spot, sparking fury from wildlife volunteers.
The three-month-old cygnet was found by the Primrose Bridge on the Dudley No 2 Canal near Bumble Hole Nature Reserve.
Devastated volunteers discovered the shocked young swan with a head wound and pellet lodged in its skull.
After the RSPCA and Bishops Wood Swan Rescue team were alerted, the cygnet was caught and taken to a sanctuary in Ombersley for emergency treatment.
The young swan was one of a family of six which hatched in April.
Swan rescue worker David Neale branded the attackers “scum” and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
He said: “It’s now touch and go as to whether the cygnet will survive. They’re scum, these people. They have nothing better to do.”
Witnesses should call police on 0845 113 5000.
