Return of the ‘Brummie Road’ roar
Wednesday 22nd July 2009, 9:50AM BST.
A group of loyal Albion fans have joined forces in an attempt to bring back the ‘Brummie Road’ roar.
More than 80 fans have signed up to join ‘The Bomber Squad,’ who will lead chants for the Baggies from the back of the Birmingham Road End stands.
The group has been set up by lifelong fans Martin Greenwood and Mark Abel and hope to become the ‘12th man’ that will help get the side back into the Premier League.
Now die-hard fans want to drum up support at the Birmingham Road End and formed The Bomber Squad, with support from its namesake Albion legend Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown.
A total of 80 fans have already signed up for the group which has been given the backing of the club.
Martin, aged 24, from Halesowen, said: “The Bomber Squad are a group of fans who are committed to restoring the unique Brummie Road atmosphere that has roared on Albion greats like Ronnie Allen, Jeff Astle, Bob Taylor and, of course, the legendary Bomber Brown over the years.
“The Hawthorns is a traditional football ground that deserves a traditional atmosphere from all four sides.
“Now that we’re back in the Championship, we all need to come together more than ever to be the twelfth man.”
Brown said: “This is a great idea. Anything which encourages the fans to be even more supportive of the team than they already are gets my support.
“In my day, the players loved to attack towards the Brummie Road End because of the atmosphere it generated.
“Our fans are always very supportive but if we can get the Brummie back to how it used to be, it will not only drive the players on but also intimidate the opposition.”
Mark, aged 23, from Hagley, added: “We’re delighted to have the backing of such a legend as Bomber.
“He knows full well the positive effect a vibrant Brummie can have on the team from his own playing days.”
Martin is now urging all like-minded fans – who want to up the noise levels at The Hawthorns – to join the group by emailing him at martin@westbrom.com
