Friend set for Bristol City loan

Wednesday 22nd July 2009, 11:00AM BST.

WALSALL V WOLVES 23 GD 21Wolves left-back George Friend is set to join Championship side Bristol City on a season-long loan from the Premier League club.

The 21-year-old is expected to join the Robins some time after the friendly between the two clubs at Ashton Gate this Saturday.

Friend impressed on Wolves’ pre-season tour of Australia, playing in both games against Perth Glory and North Queensland Fury.

But he is behind fit-again George Elokobi, Stephen Ward and former City full-back Matt Hill in the current pecking order at left-back.

A move to send Friend out on loan is no surprise, as his chances of regular Premier League football seem remote at the moment.

The temporary transfer brings Devon-born Friend closer to his West Country roots, having joined Wolves from Exeter in August 2008.

A month ago, Friend said he would probably be loaned out to a Championship club and Bristol City have now stepped in to offer him the chance of first team football at Ashton Gate.

Friend played six games in Wolves’ Championship-winning campaign as he played second fiddle to first Ward, then Hill, as Elokobi sat out the rest of the season after damaging his cruciate knee ligaments in August.

Now the Molineux prospect will compete with new arrival Andre Blackman from Portsmouth and first-choice Jamie McAllister at City, while he will also vie for Michael McIndoe’s left-wing berth after the former Wolves man’s move to Sheffield United fell through.

Good in the air, strong and quick, Friend is a useful man to have and can do more than a decent job at wide left, as he proved in the away games at Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday during Wolves’ promotion-winning season.

City were seeking cover at left-back, after being forced to play midfielder Cole Skuse and centre-back Liam Fontaine there last season.

Shocking decision to be honest- he produced some excellent displays on the left wing last season only to be replaced by clueless Ward. He has height, strength and pace and would give us a different option going forward.

If Elokobi is injured or not up to the Prem then we are in big trouble with Ward or Hill as backup. Ward was terrible for countless games before Hill came back in.

There’s no denying we’re going to face a big challenge but I can’t wait, think we have made some decent signings and when Mancienne signs on for a season long loan and we get in another striker I think we will be in decent shape.

Experience and physical maturity are what he needs and what he will get at Bristol in the Championship, and he’ll come back next year a physically stronger player ready for our European quest.

RIGHT …………….. im determined not to jump on the negative band wagon but!!! a couple of things are really starting to grind on me!

one of the main things is this trial and error squad mixing for friendlies, we should be starting our best 11 as many times as we can to give us enought time to gel ready for new season. Doyle injury is a blow but what im more bothered about is the fact that they reckon he will be back for start anyone who is involved with or has been involved with football knows he will miss start for definate! and now milijas missing, you can bet your life he has an injury also! plus no haniman (or however u spell it) so reading between the lines were starting season off almost the same as we left last!

Not a bad thing some of you think, but any true football fan and anyone with any real knowledge of the game will back me up in saying we are in no way shape or form ready for the prem with that squad!

i went to the walsall game and it was embarrassing!

they are not fit, they are just not ready fitness wise yet! blah blah blah since when do you need fitness to knock a simple ball 10yrds n keep the ball for 10 passes? something we could not do!

balde?? joke, anyone with pace, see u later! which will be week in week out in prem, serman, good head n pass on him, halford, no frills average!

i will remain optimistic but if we dont get experience in now we are going to struggle big time, the young mcarthy chap who picked wigan (god only knows why) but we have come out n said he was one for the future not now! so why? what about the bloody now?

our squad is in my opinion nowhere close to a prem side looking to bed ourselves FACT!!

we are in big trouble and i soooooooooooooooo wish i was wrong!!

Is Mick McCarthy capable of buying a decent centre back ? Or does he have a blind spot for his old playing position ? If we don’t get a Premier quality centre back, preferably two in the next 3 weeks,we should expect not only defeats but heavy defeats.Craddock is currently our best bet and he struggled 6 years ago.

I am not really all that concerned. We do need 1-2 experienced heads in there (even if on loan) but I think the quality of signings made so far will see us safe. This will be the premiership season where half the league will be on minus goal difference and poor sides like Hull, Burnley, Blues, Pompey, Wigan will finish below us. Dieter Hamman and Michael Ball on free transfers would do the trick. Get Aaron Ramsay in on loan for that bit of quality. I think we are buying the best young players within our grasp and our situation looking alot healthier than alot of our rivals. This time last year people were moaning about Freddie and Bothroyd etc we have moved on and improved not to mention winning the championship with 7 more points than the tescos did without parachute payments. I think what we will lack in experience our quality, pace and superior fitness will see us comfortably to safety. we are wolves.

    The Usual Suspects

Comment 76 Agreed & after losing 2-1 to the mighty Port Vale – its looking more likely that we are no better off than our neighbours last season

Doyle and Milijas simply not enough quality – Surman good signing – Halford average – Hanniman (sp?) no better than average

Fitness or not we cant even manage to string passes together and put the likes of Port Vale to the sword

We desperately need min of 3 better than average Prem Proven Players – What we have is NOT enough

Nothing to do with being NEG – Just facing facts – All the positive vibes in the world wont change our shortcomings in quality and experience for our Prem journey

How many of you out there believe that the squad of last season is capable of Prem survival because thats what we have more or less

Injury has already affected Doyle – so do we have strength in depth??? Fitness wise – Port Vale looked fitter and better at stringing passes together

So lets not get 3 Prem Poven Players – and lets not pay them Prem money cos “their not welcome at the Mol” – What utter TOSH

Dont invest Mr Morgan and we will be back in the Chumpionship faster than you can say Redrow

George is a very good player as is Craddock.

More important are the injuries we are picking up. I have said a number of times in these forums that we need quality backup at the front and on the wings and suggested that we get Ledley ASAP. I am now being proven right with two strikers injured before the season starts, just waiting for Kites or Jarvis to join them and for the same in midfield.

I still think we need proven quality, Doyle is a great signing no probs there. However, we need a Duff for the wing, We need Joe Ledley in the middle and we need a tall strong seasoned quality striker up front to play off SEB. Keogh is a great athlete and and all round good ball player, but in the last quarter has great trouble finding the net!!! :-)

Craddock is a good player in the championship. He will be slower than he was 6 yrs ago and he was woeful then. He and Butler where so pedestrian, and just to think the premiership is more frightening then ever with the loikes of Torres, Drogba, Rooney etc will be licking their lips if they see Craddock in the defence. IMO the defence has never being properly addressed since lescott left. We have CB’s at the club but not one would be good enough to lace Lescott’s boots. Wolves should offer big money for Manceinne. He is the one player I think will be great for wolves. He and Stearman are the partnership at england level and they would be great at wolves. I hope Wolves bring in at least one exp head and preferably to partner the Serb in midfield as I dont think Henry will cut the mustard. But I hope I am wrong. Someone like Dieter Hammannan would be tailor made. My mate went to the matches on tuesday and wednesday and too be honest there is nothing to really write home about. Its all about FITNESS. I think once we are nearer to Aug 15 I got a feeling there will be a couple more signing in the offering especially now that Spurs are beginning to make moves in the window, hence they will be releasing some of their players.

So hang on, the argument is:

“We need players with prem experience! We need Mancienne and we need Ledley!”

So, Just t omention that Mancienne has played 2 prem games in his life and completed neither.

Joe Ledley has never played a minute in the prem.

    You lot are NUTS.
