Defenders a ‘priority’ for Hutchings
Wednesday 22nd July 2009, 10:55AM BST.
Walsall manager Chris Hutchings is making defensive reinforcements a “priority” before the start of the season.
The Saddlers boss confirmed he wants to add to his backline after last night’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves, despite centre-back Stephen Roberts continuing his recovery after eight months out.
Netan Sansara – Hutchings’ only recognised left-back – limped out with an ankle injury at the Banks’s Stadium, meaning trialist Jamie Vincent will play there in Saturday’s home friendly with Albion.
With Vincent yet to be offered a deal, Hutchings is keen to snap up extra defenders.
He said: “We are looking, a left-back is a priority, as we’ve only got Netan, and possibly a centre-back. We’re short in that department, but we’ll see how things develop over the next couple of weeks.
“I’m pleased with the boys we’ve brought in – they’ve settled in very quickly.”
The boss wants to bide his time before making a decision on Vincent and fellow trialist, winger Peter Till, who also featured last night.
He said: “I want to see how they go again.”

Don’t quite understand why he let Boertien go. I assumed he was confident with Netan’s ability and wanted to play him all the time but now ‘we’ve only got Netan’, hmm. Although I didn’t see him play last night I would sign up Vincent, he is a proven player at this level so why not?

Pack Collins,D Ward and Shackell off!!

My gut feeling from last night was that we wont score enough goals… with Steve Jones the only attacking player to come in, I fear we haven’t got enough fire power.

wont score many goals

Sam Parkin is a forward!
I reckon some of the younger players will once agin make an impact this year.
Nichols is also a forward alongside Deeney
I dont think we are short in the striker dept
He is right we need more defensive cover
As for Boertien perhaps both he and Jimmy muddle both know something we dont!

We need strikers who can finish…we were gifted opportunities last night and just through them away!!! it was agonising.

We are still at least three experienced players short on last seasons small squad.
Zaboob was our only recognised crosser of the ball,(could we bring him back with an improved offer ?) We should never have allowed him to go so easily, always gave 100% after recovering from injury. We also need a midfield general, and left back. We hope that our present strikers will rise to the challenge (Deeney and Parkin should be good providing they get the service and Parkin avoids injury) but a proven goalscorer is necessary. Very few proven goalscorers such as Lee Hughes become available, but that is the sort of ability we need to compete at this level.
Weston can play in the centre and Taundry can play right back so we at least have some cover defensively.
