Fly-tipping crackdown is paying off

Monday 20th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

A new campaign to tackle fly-tipping in Walsall has already been hailed a success with increasing numbers of calls about the problem.

Tackle the Tippers drive has proved a hit with the community.

Residents and businesses are helping in the fight against fly-tipping by reporting incidents.

Around 30 tonnes of rubbish is illegally fly-tipped in the borough every week and over £85,000 of public money is spent on cleaning it up each year.

Walsall Council chiefs have revealed an increase in the number of calls to the council’s contact centre following the launch of the campaign.

Councillor Garry Perry, cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: “People have already started to help in our fight against fly-tipping in the borough – residents are reporting more incidents and are on the lookout for the culprits.

“But this is more than just catching the culprits – we want to encourage everyone to take responsibility for cleaning up their communities.

“The culprits don’t have to irresponsibly dump their waste, there are other ways and means of getting rid of it responsibly and we want to get this message across to them too,” he added.

Residents can report litter, dog fouling, fly tipping, fly posting and graffiti by calling 01922 653344.
