Mercenaries not welcome says Morgan
Friday 17th July 2009, 11:26AM BST.
Wolves chairman Steve Morgan insists the club will not bow to “mercenary type” players this summer.
Since winning the Championship, Wolves have been offered the chance to sign former England World Cup stars Sol Campbell and Nicky Butt, among others, while Butt’s Newcastle team-mate Kevin Nolan is another who has been linked with a move to Molinuex.
Butt and Nolan are two of 15 players at St James’ Park on £50,000 a week or more.
But it has never been the intention of the ‘Three Ms’ – Morgan, chief executive Jez Moxey and manager Mick McCarthy – to alter the young and hungry ethic that has seen the club sign some of the most exciting talent in the country.
“I think that’s what we’re trying to get into the club and I think the players we’re talking to want to come to Wolves,” said Morgan.
“We don’t want the sort of mercenary type and we all know who they are – they have a season or two here and a season or two there.
“They’ve had more clubs than I’ve had hot dinners. We don’t want that type of player – we want the players who want to come to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers and they will definitely blend into the rest of the team and become one of us.”
Apart from 37-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, all six of the summer signings McCarthy has made are 26 or under.
The board and McCarthy believe with the scouting system they have, the club can recruit top talent, such as £2.6m Serb Nenad Milijas from under the radar of the established top-flight clubs.
Morgan added: “I’m not even thinking about staying up this season because the thought of going down isn’t even crossing my mind. We’re in the Premier League and we want to establish ourselves and then kick-on.”

Sol Campbell is better than any defender we currently have.
Nolan is better than Henry.
Butt is too old.

Morgan you are an idiot. Sign all of them or we wil lbe League 2 in 2 seasons

Superb Attitude!
You can easily see why he is an extremely successful businessman!

good god an idiot is he elephant?
so that explains why hes a multi millionaire in charge of the club you claim to support whilst your not fit to be near the ground? yep out of the two of you my moneys on you being the smart one alright =]

elephant jim jims (boggie fan) how can we be in league two in two seasons you muppet!
Well said numero uno M.
This policy of “young and hungry” is the most exciting I have witnessed in my 30 years of supporting WOlves.
The only other clubs I can think of that have takne this route have been succesful.
Everton, Villa and Reading of old.
All the others around us, like Sunderland, Bolton, Wigan, Blackburn. All seem to be buying old has beens.
A club to be proud of!! without a doubt.
LOL do jimjams/wolvesmod know what they are talking about lol. yeah wolves mob lets spend loads of money on players that will stay 1 season because if they did sign Sol and Nolan do you think thats the kind of player thats gena come and play in the Championship?? Noal didnt do anythin at Newcastle and Sol is getting to old and nither of them would play in the Championship if we was to go down. There looking to the future and signing top class players who want to play for the club, you can not ask for mutch more than that well done the 3 m’s keep up the good work
Report abuse
Completely agree with the sentiment but would still like to see some Premier League experience join the squad.
We need to be careful that we don’t bring in some Prima Donna who just wants the cash and ruins the morale in the dressing room. That said, someone like Paul Ince or Dennis Irwin can act as a stabilising influence, encouraging the youngsters and passing on the benefits of their experience. That kind of player would only enhance our chances.
I don’t want us to sign someone JUST because they’ve played in the Prem.
Spot on – remember the “experienced players” we signed last time to keep us in the Prem. No commitment and the first sign of a knock and they’re gone for months.
Great attitude Steve! Spot on mate!
UTW!
2-thats just the sort of attitude and answer that could put us back years, thank god we have the three MMs and not idiots like you running the club.
1. I agree Nolan would be a good buy-but as for Campbell no way.
In the three Ms we trust

Wolvesmod, OFFICIALLY YOU ARE A MORON!
You obviously have no idea on the work that Wolves are doing. Read the label CAMPBELL TO OLD AND EXPENSIVE, NOLAN IS OVER RATED AND OVER WEIGHT!
BUTT WAS RUBBISH AT BLUES AND THAT WAS NEARLY 3 YEARS AGO SO WHY WOULD YOU THINK HE BE BETTER THAN US.
YOU ARE A PRIZED MUPPET!

Spot on Steve..
2.YOU’RE THE IDIOT AND A SADWELL FAN TOO…
No true Wolves fan would say those stupid words.
Looks like the school holidays have brought the jealous pop league Sadwell fans on here..lol
Looks like you require extra English lessons to in the hols…
Good advice.. so take it!!!

Agree entirely, we dont need these mercenaries but do think we need a bit more experience to bind the team together when things are not going our way. A couple of old heads with the knowledge of the prem would be essential but the names bandied about dont seem to be the right ones for gods team…. UTW

“Apart from 37-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, all six of the summer signings McCarthy has made are 26 or under.”
Who writes this garbage…………. why didnt you just say 5 out of six signings are under 26????? Seriously read it back to yourself and see what nonsense you’ve written.
As for football, youth is the way forward for a club like us who cant compete in the £12 mil for 1 players league. I hope McCarthy comes as he is apparently excellent.
As for staying up, Mr Morgan, NEWS FLASH, we will struggle like any promoted team does. We have to get some experienced players in that team. Mancienne is a good player but again not much experience in the Prem. We arn’t playing Liverpool and United every week and I believe we are 2 or 3 signings away from having a great chance of surviving but we need to go for it in the transfer market!

1 – He’s not the any quicker than the defenders we have and that INCLUDES Jody Craddock.

Completely agree with Morgan here. Why pay over the odds for at best average players who are looking for a big pay day and aren’t botheed about who they get it from.
And to post 1- have you seen Nolan play in the last 2 and half seasons? He’s been a shadow of what he was. At both Bolton and Newcastle he has been poor for quite a while. I’d rather have Karl Henry. Every Newcastle fan I’ve spoken to has said the same thing- can’t wait to see the back of Nolan.
Young, hungry and with games under their belts, that’s what we’ve going for and long may it continue.
Nice one!
We don’t need any players that are on their last legs and in it for the money!
Good thinking BATMAN! That’s why he is where he is. The policy he is promoting at Wolves is excellent as long as you buy the right young players and blend them with the more experienced. If that works then so will the club!! :-)
@ 3
Despite that he’s naively oblivious though that in the real world people work for the company that pays the best wages rather than the pure love of working for Redrow, Bridgemere etc.
Number 2… i think you’re the idiot mate! League 2…are you sure! What a numpty you really are! A great attitude to have from Morgan, yes these players might be better than some we have, but will they have the drive to perform at those levels? Unlikely. Campbell is past it and not better than we have. Nolan ‘could’ be better than Henry but if his form for Newcastle was anything to go by… he wouldnt add anything…except a rather large wage to the bill.
Well done 3 M’s! i like the attitude of them. We dont want players earning £50,000 aWeek coming to Wolves and just taking our money we pay in tickets for games… We want players that earning our money we spend! We Have a Bright Future Ahead of Us.

Elephant JimJams, do you want to tell a man that no doubt earns more in a month than you’ll ever see in your lifetime, an idiot?
Look how well those players served the might Newcastle! Ha. Get real.
I’m four square with Chairman Morgan.
Wolves need players who play with their ‘hearts’ not with their ‘minds’.
However, I believe the current squad still needs a couple of experienced, Premier-seasoned players.
This is great news to hear andconfirms that we are heading back to being a top 12 club.
We don’t need players who just want big money but won’t put effort in to earn it.
The players we have are mainly getting better and we have some real exciting times coming in the future I believe.
Well Done to Morgan, Mc Carthy and Moxey.
Whilst in principal I agree with Steve Morgan, we also have to be practical. The likes of a Sol Campbell for one or two seasons is an absolute necessity given our general lack of PL experience.
2. Explain how it is possible to go from the Premiership to League 2 in 2 seasons then?
Seriously there’s some dumb people on here…
Report abuse
No. 2. It’s you who is the idiot! Are you happy for these players who are just looking for 1 last bumper pay day to come and put us in financial trouble. You can bet if we did get relegated they would soon be off, and if we tried to get rid of them, we would have to pay off their deals costing millions. Look at the state Newcastle are in doing things like that! You Muppet!!!!

I think this is the right approach. Even if we tried to buy our way to success, there is no way we could compete with the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd, etc.
But if we do could establish a reputation as a club that gives youth a chance, there is a far greater chance that more and more good youngsters would chose our club rather than the likes of the above, where they know, they might never get a chance.

it makes me laugh with the scouting system we have! itcant be any different to any other prem club especially the top 4 im pretty certain if milijas was that good then a fewother prem clubs would of picked up on him , villa knew about him but didnt bother, so this so called gem now one knew about wasnt wanted by villa and yet hes brilliant and has missed the net so to speak, yeh right!!!!

This is an excellent policy. On the whole, Wolves fans are working class folk who graft week in week out for their hard earned cash. What they want to see at The Golden Palace is a team who will also graft and give 100% for the shirt. There is no going back to the 1990′s and the signing of ‘big money’ injury prone has beens. On the whole since MM has been here we have seen players give 100% in the shirt, despite short comings here and there.Long may it continue. We now have a team that combines talent and graft – things are looking good. Out of darkness cometh light.

Open letter to Mr Morgan….You are naive Mr Morgan, totally naive, if you truely believe that ‘young and hungry’ is going to be enough to prevent Wolves performing the ‘yo,yo’ trick, and returning to the Championship next season.
Why do you think WBA returned to the championship at the speed of light, why do you think Wolves existed in the premiership for only one season last time.
For god sake Mr Morgan, we struggled to beat ‘perth glory and queensland roar’ last week, teams the standard of our division 1 here.
I accept that we have made some interesting signings, but who in your management organiseation announced that we were in desperite need of players with premiership experience, absolutly correct.
Mr Morgan, before its too late we need EXPERIENCE in this Wolves squad, a few players to lead the ‘young and hungry’ through the unforgiving Premiership mine field.
As a successful business man you would know and fully appreciate that there is no counter for experience, would you promote your office boy to senior management overnight ? Come on Mr Morgan, there are several top players that can do the job, even on a loan or season to season basis. Sure it will cost, but success always costs…What is more important in the long term.

I am very pleased with what we’ve got so far this summer but still think we need a signing of the calibre of Doyle in midfield!

With the recession starting to have an effect, clubs are struggling this year. Could an entrance into the PL this year mean that without inflated wages, we could be in a better position than the likes of half the current PL clubs within a couple of years? Perhaps we wont have to do much, other than to survive and then wait for all this talent were buying to realise its potential!

‘young and hungry’ will not win games in the premiership…..Mr Morgan…wake up, Wolves will not survive, we only just accounted for the aussie teams last week, with all our stars playing !!!

sam chalmers said: Jul 17th, 2009 at 1:54 pm ‘young and hungry’ will not win games in the premiership…
Sam I think you are wrong,,, it never did MAN UTD any harm and that made Hansen a right plank in that season. If you think we wont stay up by playing young and hungry then I suggest you go to small heath and watch a bunch of arrogant, over paided, over the hill players if that rocks your boat. Pre-season games is about match fitness, not about playing out of your skin. We are not going to be thrashing every team out of sight, those days are long gone. If you bothered to look at the teams, we had a mix match of players to give them minutes on the pitch, you wont find your best eleven at a start of a pre season game. That wont be learnt until we play the last pre-season game before the new season. You need to wake up and smell the coffee. You and the other planks who come on here banging on about experience should really look at newcastle. By far on paper the most experienced team to get relegated so where does your policy in buying experienced player get you….
Yep I thought you couldnt answer that. I rather have a bunch of committed fresh young players busting a lung for wolves, rather than the over paid run of the mill players which newcastle to have who couldnt really be bothered about the club attitude.
GET A GRIP AND GET A LIFE!

Sam – where is the “big” signing you claimed to know all about 2 weeks ago??
Sam – “As a successful business man you would know and fully appreciate that there is no counter for experience, would you promote your office boy to senior management overnight ?”
I cant actually disagree with you on that point but you have to remember also that it is the manager and his scouts that point out players and Mick is the one who says yes or no before Morgan sanctions anything. There is no point in blaming Morgan for who does or doesn’t come in, unless Mick says he wants someone and Morgan says no. If you have any gripe over who we have or havnt signed then its Mick you should be aiming it at, a manager who has led his team to the division title last year and is happy with his squad this year……………….
Personally id like more experience in but im fairly confident our young and hungry and SKILLFULL players will do better than some think. Forget the firendlies by the way………..you say our stars played but not in the combinations they will be starting in and also the games are a fitness exercise at this point!
Sam Chalmers asked “why do you think Wolves existed in the premiership for only one season last time ?”
I doubt Steve Morgan reads these boards, so I’ll have a go at answering.
First, was it because we went ‘young and hungry’ in 2003 ? Er, no. Far from it. We had a bunch of players with extensive top division experience: Butler, Craddock, Ince, Irwin, Iversen, Kennedy, Luzhny, Rae…
So, where did we actually go wrong ? Well you might think that Dave Jones would know. He says he wasn’t given any funds – and we actually spent just over £4m on 3 players (Silas, Craddock and Camara), got 3 others on free transfers (Okoronkwo, Iversen and Luzhny) and got a couple of loans.
I’m with Jones. He’s right. But this time, we’ve spent three-times as much already, and apparently the recruitment hasn’t stopped. McCarthy isn’t complaining that there’s no money, so Morgan and Moxey are holding up their end.
There’s still time for us to repeat some of the mistakes of 2003. For example, we could go recruit players who are over-paid, old and complacent, with your all-important ‘Premiership’ experience – players like Butt, Viduka and Duff. Well they certainly know about ‘relegation’, but I’m not sure how much they still know about ‘fight’, so I really hope that we don’t.
Thankfully, the 3Ms aren’t repeating the mistakes of the past. They might be making new ones instead, but it’s no repeat of 2003.
Keep The Faith.

I think the 3 Ms have a better idea on how and why to take this club on to bigger and better things than anybody who puts a post an this site. To me it seems everything that is being done is all for the long term and all loyal Wolves supporters should get behind the managment and team. Over the next year there will be ups and downs and moans and groans that is were everbody has to stand united and success will follow.

You need a well run club with highly motivated players with high levels of fitness, and balls skills to stay in the premiership. experience helps you manage difficult games and situations better.
Newcastle had quality players, but morale and motivation was low given how badly the club was being run

Some good comments some idiots and the usual drivel from people who aren’t wolves fans and should really be commenting on their own clubs……….. The truth of the matter is no one knows for sure how our championship winning players will perform We all hope that they step up to the plate. No one knows how our signings will perform. We seem to be looking to do the right things, but I do get the feeling that most fans would be happy to see the signing of a couple of mid to late twenties premiership savvy players to help out in midfield and centre back

I think there is every chance that our young, hungry and talented squad will stay up, but we will be surprised by which of the players succeed in the PL.
It is in the second year, when the other clubs have worked us out that we have to sell those players who are good CCC standard and buy in some Premiership quality to move us forward. If we have survived one season we have more chance of attracting PL players of the right age, who have a future (not just a past like Nolan, Butt and old Sol)
