Hopes for no rise on council tax for 2010/11
Friday 17th July 2009, 11:19AM BST.
Council tax bills in Wolverhampton could be frozen for the first time, it has been revealed today.
The authority has published a draft budget including a prediction that there will be a 0 per cent rate rise for the city’s 136,000 homes next year.
The latest calculations behind the 2010/11 budget, published in advance to consult the public, are based on estimates that sufficient cost-cutting can take place to meet this target.
The only other time rates weren’t increased was in 1993, when they were in fact reduced by 0.3 per cent.
There was a 3.5 per cent rise this year, meaning council tax bills in Band D households are now £1,461.60 a year.
Councillor Wendy Thompson, cabinet member for finance, said: “We have always said that a 0 per cent rise is our aspiration, and while it is far too early to say with any certainty we can achieve it, that remains our target.”

Wolverhampton Council suggesting a zero increase on Council tax – you must be joking?
You cannot even keep your internal costs in check!
When Council debt is running into millions, senior staff are being paid as much as the Prime Minister and ratepayers are paying through the nose for almost non-existent works for living in the outskirts of the city – a zero increase is impossible – COME CLEAN and admit it!!!

that would be welcome news to Wolverhampton council taxpayers. Cut all those wasteful duplicated office jobs and you’ll save a fortune!

Until the Council sorts out the Axon compensation and introduces Single Status Job Evaluation , together with Equal Pay Back Pay , all of the predictions / forecasts about next year’s Council Tax increase are meaningless waffle .

Can’t get water out of a dry well, so no surprise here.

it should have happened last year the services have got worse but the charges still wentup all because they what to give them selves a pay rise no mention about the waste of money on the red route

How desperate must the Tories be to stay in power? It smacks of mugging the electorate! Set a 0% council tax in the hope that voters forget about the closed old folks homes, neighbourhood libraries and community centres. Very sly!
All the Tory/Lib Dems have done is cut budgets rather than finding ways of working smarter, which Axon would have done. Crude budget cutting isn’t sustainable; it will only go so far.
So watch out! Council tax WILL go up in 2011/12 and it’ll still be the same inefficient, incompetent and self-serving council!

Bravo Wendy Thompson! At least they’re actually aiming for something positive. They could save more money with a rigorous appraisal of senior salaried staff, Cut the dead wood, and concentrate on the basics services that we all use, health, transport & education. Scrap the special interest luxuries untill we have money to spare.
