Walsall sign striker Parkin

Thursday 16th July 2009, 11:25AM BST.

PARKIN 2 TS 16Striker Sam Parkin has become Walsall’s fourth signing in a week after signing a one-year deal.

The 28-year-old has joined on a free transfer, with the option of a further year, at the Banks’s Stadium following his departure from Luton.

Parkin follows Steve Jones, Mark Hughes and Josh O’Keefe to the Saddlers, who start their pre-season preparations at Rotherham on Saturday.

Parkin, who has scored 102 career goals, started as a trainee at Chelsea and had loan spells at Millwall, Northampton and Oldham before a permanent switch to Swindon in 2002.

Ipswich spent £550,000 to take him to Portman Road in 2005, but he struggled in an injury-plagued year and moved to Luton for £340,000 in 2006.

Parkin was released by the Hatters at the end of the season, following their relegation to the Blue Square Premier.

Walsall boss Chris Hutchings said: “We are delighted to get Sam on board. He’s a quality player who retains the ball well and brings others into play.

“His experience will serve us well and he has certainly shown the necessary hunger and desire in training. Hopefully we can get him scoring reguarly again.

“This is another excellent addition to the squad.”

Good to see we are aiming high with a player from the lower divisions at the end of his career.

lets hope Hutch can find the Sam Parkin from Swindon Town, as the one from Luton has scored just 9 goals in 63 matches in the last two seasons.

Good signing if he can avoid injury. Now bring back Zaboob to supply the crosses !

Parkin is a good signing – wacca, he is only 28 and Saddler you have to remember that Luton have been a sinking ship over that period. I think the lad just needs some good coaching and to get his confidence back, hopefully we can provide that.
