Prison officer case takes new twist

Thursday 16th July 2009, 11:00AM BST.

amitjo1A prison officer who claims she was forced out of her job after criticism that she was too sexy would sit and chat to inmates in their cells, putting herself and colleagues at risk, a tribunal heard.

Workmates of Amitjo Kajla were also concerned that a number of inmates at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, near Wolverhampton, knew personal details including her address.

The 22-year-old, whose ex-boyfriend was serving time for armed robbery, was warned about her behaviour.

Acting governor Michael Doolan overheard an offender tell her “I wouldn’t mind taking you back to my cell” and spoke to her after she failed to challenge the inmate.

He told the tribunal: “I wanted her to know that she had to assert her authority or the prisoners wouldn’t take her seriously.

“I felt that at times she treated the job as a game.”

Miss Kajla, of Birmingham Road, Wolverhampton, is seeking compensation for constructive dismissal, alleging she was forced to resign in April last year after barbed remarks by colleagues about her appearance and behaviour.

But prison officer Lee Hastings, accused of bullying her, claimed she breached security rules on several occasions.

Blaming her naivity, he described their reaction when the 5ft officer turned up for work wearing one of her own tops, sparking a frenzy of alarms as inmates pressed their emergency bells for attention.

Mr Hastings claimed he was unaware she had been told she could wear her own clothing, while her own uniform was altered.

He also denies humiliating Miss Kajla by swearing and shouting at her in front of inmates, but admitted he could be abrupt but claims he was concerned at her habit of isolating herself so that prisoners could “crowd” her.

Stephen Roberts, for Miss Kajla, claims she was penalised for embracing the prison service’s new policy of ‘dynamic security,’ which encouraged more interaction with prisoners to gain their trust.

The hearing continues.
