Wolves weigh up another striker bid

Wednesday 15th July 2009, 10:30AM BST.

iwelumoWolves are weighing up a loan move for a striker to cover for the injured Chris Iwelumo.

Manager Mick McCarthy also revealed that the club’s main transfer activity was completed for the summer, effectively knocking down speculation linking them with Villa defender Zat Knight.

Scotland international Iwelumo is set to be out for two month, after breaking a bone in his foot in Friday’s 1-0 win over Perth Glory.

Wolves have bid £500,000 for Southampton’s attacking midfielder Adam Lallana and also want another young target, as well as Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne on a season-long loan.

But McCarthy has now hinted he could move for a striker on loan as well to join Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, £6.5million Kevin Doyle, Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes.

The manager said; “I’m happy with what I’ve got up front, but that’s not to say I won’t do something else, if there was something available.

“We’ve got to have seven substitutes as well this season and we must have competition for places.

“We saw how thin on the ground we were last season when we had to take Marlon Harewood on loan and we can’t allow that to happen again.

“Once the season starts, we can’t take anyone on loan. I want as big a squad as I can possibly get.”

Wolves have signed six players in readiness for the Premier League and have former Celtic defender Bobo Balde on trial.

But McCarthy insisted he wasn’t chasing more deals.

He said: “I’m delighted with what I’ve got and if there’s something we can do and we can manage it, fine.

“I’m not busting a gut.”

McCarthy cautioned fans against thinking a deal was already done for Mancienne.

The Wolves boss said: “He is a good lad and I’ve asked the question but it’s not down to us.

“I would have taken him at the drop of a hat and still would, but it’s down to Chelsea.”

He denied reports that the club had bid for the England under-21 international, after being linked with a £4million offer.

The Squad looks a bit light weight to me.

Get an injury in midfield and I think we may struggle. I would have gone for another 3 players, another midfielder, another striker and mancienne..

Mick’s going for two of them, but the midfield is my biggest worry.

I hope we’re not done especially after being linked to Nolan, Dunne, Ledley. We backed out of the Leko deal so obviously we were looking to add strength in that area so surely we still need to. I’m really pleased with our transfers and I’m convinced we will be fine (I even did the predictor on the BBC.co.uk/sport, go to football them premier league and go into predictor) I gave very fair predictions and we survived easy. Worth a go so check it out. We need Mancienne another Midfielder and a striker, there are still good players on free too.

Defo go for a new striker on loan …

No disrespect to Vokes but it’s a load of pressure on the kid if we have another ‘striker down in action’

May be have a look at Man City who are over loaded with strikers and see if we could get one on loan (with them paying part of the wage bill) – Bonjov (sp) or perhaps Benjani (sp)

You have completely mis-read what Mick is saying. He isnt saying we wont sign someone on a permanent basis, he is merely saying that the option of signing a loan player like last year wont be available when the season starts so we cant be in that position!! Where does he say we want a loan signing in?? You have twisted this to make a story from nothing again. He says we want as big a squad as we can but doesnt say we are limited to the loan market as you state.

I thought some of these players were fringe players and we would be buying just a couple of people with experience. Remeber Stoke did it last year and look where they finished i just feel we are gambling and Moxeys statement was un true. Grace – Kites has only recently started his comeback. He was earlier quoted (not sure if it was here or on the official site) that when the team do three sessions he only does two. When the team do two, he may only do one. He’s being eased back into it – mainly from a fitness perspective because he had a lot longer off than the majority of others. There’s still a full calendar month until the season starts – I’m pleased that he wasn’t being risked in the end of session kickaround. If it was a fortnight until the season starts, then I’d be a little more concerned.

Agree with you about Vokes – think he could be an impact player from the bench potentially. When big Chris is back, then maybe look for him to go out on loan, but I’d chance him for a last 20 mins impact when the season starts. The problem is that if we were to have SEB or Doyle out for a month say, we’d need a better ‘proven’ centre forward, in case we’re both too optimistic about Vokes’ potential.

While I do not agree with ‘lisbeth’ in considering Robbie Fowler as a future Wolves signing, I do agree that the premiership experience he gained would be invaluable to our lads.
Forget about his stint at Cardiff, he was never able to fit in, and Cardiff were a rubbish outfit when he was there.

I would have thought getting a forward in permanently as opposed to loan would have been the best option. McCormack at Cardiff would appear to have all the right credentials, a natural goalscorer, young, has tasted international football.
With Lallana, the new broom at the Saints are apparently not short of a bob or two and so I think a £1 million take it or leave it deal makes sense.
I wish Man city would damn well leave Chelsea alone re. Terry so we can sign Mancienne and bid £20 milion for Jo Lescott instead so we can get a windfall… very wishful thinking.
I certainly hope its not the end of the transfer activity. Whilst the squad has some quality in depth now MM seems very confident that we can more than hold our own in the world’s toughest league.

I very rarely win a week and consider it a damned fine performance if I get 6 of the 10 predictions right (not the scores mind you – 2 is an above average week). And that’s normally when the big 4 are all playing at home!

Strangely though, on the basis of no points against the big 4, a draw and defeat against the next 4 (Everton, Spurs, Vile and Man City) and an average 3 points against the remainder, I’d get to 37 points – so a mere 3 points more than you got to.

Incidentally, 37 points would have been enough to survive 9 of the 14 seasons since the premiership went to 20 teams whilst 34 points would only have guaranteed safety twice.

    52) What a ridiculous way of predicting how our season will pan out. Fulham lost their other game in Oz 1-0 and the Tescos lost to Histon the other day. It means nothing!!!

    55. Andy I would prefer your 37 points to my 34. I think apart from the top 8 teams most sides will have a minus goal difference and for me Pompey, Burnley & Wigan for relegation. This season will be the most interesting from a relegation perspective and I hope we can pull away towards the end of the season so we all have finger nails left.

Benjani on loan would be a shrewd piece of business as would Jerome Thomas as cover.

    Extremely Sad Wolf

55 – Andy. I think that’s a genius way of looking at things.

From that I would create a mini league of relegation candidates with 37 points as a fair target for survival and see how each team is performing in relation to this after each game. The one point against sides 5-8 would be based on a home draw whilst I’d split the 3 points target against 9-20 teams as two points average for the home game and one point for the away game.

That’s why I’m extremely sad but it could be interesting to see how this looks throughout the season.

not that im anywhere near the football “expert” rich5wolves is, but with Seb and Doyle our only feasible prem strikers, we’ve needed a backup even before Iwelumo got injured.

i hope Mick;s radio silence on the matter means there are delicate negotiations underway

9 Brummiewolves,Wait for the moans from the normal whingers saying that we have not signed any proven Premiership players etc. There is a big gulf between the prem and championship as Boro showed us in the FA cup last season.Last season we had spells when we were positively awful but thanks to the two spells of good runs we survived to win the championship. In my opinion we need to sign a proven quality left back,Centre half,Ball winning midfielder, and another striker.Although we have spent 14 million most people agreed that 20-25 would be the minimum required to invest in the right players to sustain our posistion in the prem not just for the coming season but for years to come.

Wanderer in Eire after giving up trying to decipher your drivel I have a couple of points Gudjohnson waould never have been a target for us as he simply wouldn’t have been interested so his price is irrelevant! I don’t think anyone is expecting any of our forwards to score 20+ not many have over the last few years so 10-13 would be fantastic and achievable. What has buying players and selling them on go to do with anything? when you buy a player you are hoping that he will be at the club for a long time and a success it’s not EBAY you idiot!!!

Winslow Wolf I am so sorry u didnt understand if dat makes me an idiot so be it as long as u r a bright spark!!!why reply 2 an idiot winslow wolf??seeking attention or argument??
my point is simple when u buy a player more often than not they r sold on.So wen u buy a player 4 1mill and sell him on 4 3mill a few yrs later it means de player was a success hence de increase in value!!and if dis was done 3 times out of 5 de club wud be investing in de correct personal!!resulting in success on and off de field!!!as 4 gudjohnson sorry didnt realise he your best mate that u now he wud not come 2 de wolves so why bother asking!!!take man city as an example they asked kaka he was never going 2 go der but city benefited by showing an interest by appealing 2 other players such as tevez/adeybaor!!it raised der profile 10 fold by being linked 2 kaka as de world press did dis 4 dem. just like de link dat as been created wit john terry he will never go 2 city but they then go and make 15mill offer 4 lescott!!so when lescott as talks wit city hughes says we tryin 2 buy jt and pair u together!!4 lescott dis is an attraction!!get me drift now wolf man??some how i think u dont as u now it all!!!dream on boy as u de real idiot!!

    76. You talk drivel, have just confirmed your total lack of understanding of anything and have just embarrassed yourself. No need to say anymore. But I will the Kaka saga was a farce and showed City up for what the are, do you really believe such a public snub by one of the top 5 players in the world increases the profile of the club? Of course not. I don’t need to be Gudjohnsons mate to know that his wage demands are out of reach and he would have the pick of clubs outside the ‘Big 5′ unfortunately that isn’t us. with regards to buying and selling, as I said it is not Ebay clubs generally at our level do not buy a player with a short term view to move him on, that usually happens only if the market or a player or his agent drives it, so the point you make is pointless and pretty senseless, (although I am impressed and frankly surprised you have a grip on rudimentary maths!) as if a player is a success you endevour to keep him. You make the rest of us look bad so pipe down eh?

76 You are a total tool, the only thing worthwhile about u is u support the mighty wolves. Shut up you mug! if aint got anything proper to say or even understandable, just zip it yeah. 77. spot on also no offence to big Jol but City aren’t able to sign the best players in the world so they are buying the best of the rest, so the thing about linking yourself to Kaka etc is a load of ‘kaka’!! If we linked ourselves to Rooney or Xavi would other players look at us and go brilliant I’ll have to sign up too? No we’d look desperate just like Man City. 76. once more for the record u r a toooooooool!!!!
