Nash’s Aussie Tour Diary – Day 10
Wednesday 15th July 2009, 11:55AM BST.
Wolves correspondent Tim Nash brings you day 10 of his daily diary from Australia – starring ‘Foz’ on his birthday night out, a Tiger Woods-esque John Gough and a wayward Stephen Ward.
Club reporter John Hendley finally got out for a birthday drink last night.
Twenty four hours after the players sang ‘happy birthday’ to him on the WACA pitch and being presented with a chocolate cake, ‘Foz’ invited the small group of media here – as well as director John Gough – out for a tipple in Perth to celebrate his 59th.
But, while the rest of the hacks were happy to be away from their laptops for a few hours, Gough remained ever the true professional, retiring early and taking a cab home before any damage was done.
He was keeping himself sober and fresh for the big match today.
But that wasn’t Wolves’ date with North Queensland Fury – he was up at 6.30am to play golf against manager Mick McCarthy.
After already taking money off the boss over nine holes at the nearby Burswood club last week, Gough was looking to make it a double.
At the end of another triple training session yesterday with football in the morning and evening under the floodlit WACA for the final time, there’s nothing like shooting practice to revive the players’ enthusiasm.
So cue some wildly contrasting fortunes that unfolded in front of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
Prompted by the ever-encouraging assistant manager Terry Connor, Dave Edwards seemingly couldn’t miss for a while before hitting the bar three times, while Karl Henry proved that he can really smash a true ball.
But spare a thought for poor Stephen Ward, whose efforts showed more chance of troubling the huge cricket scoreboard and the fans behind the goal than Hennessey’s net.
In one session, players were also encouraged to use their weaker foot, with Edwards and Henry again impressing in their group.
But it seems it didn’t matter for Ward, as the Irishman was heard cursing himself as shot after shot went high and wide.
Watch out you Hammers, Wardy’s coming for you.
