Nash’s Aussie Tour Diary – Day Nine
Tuesday 14th July 2009, 3:50PM BST.
Wolves correspondent Tim Nash brings you day eight of his daily diary from Australia – starring a relived ‘Foz,’ a landing eagle and a starstruck David Edwards.
Club reporter John Hendley has had his fair share of ‘stick’ on the trip – mostly from players on about his age after turning 59 on tour.
But manager Mick McCarthy wasn’t about to let the occasion pass without arranging his own celebration.
After last night’s training session, ‘Foz’ duly got his present as the players and McCarthy gathered on the pitch at the WACA to watch him being presented with a chocolate birthday cake, complete with candle.
A relived Foz said: “I knew nothing about it but it was a nice surprise – certainly better than what I was expecting, which was to be thrown in the ice bath!”
They say good management is all about getting the little things right and McCarthy, who arranged it all in secret, certainly likes to do that.
As for Foz, I’m still waiting for a slice – especially as I’ve got to buy him a birthday pint tonight!
Director John Gough has also been a fine ambassador for on this tour, meeting fans and business folk alike to promote the good name of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He’s probably shaken more hands on this trip than he’s had hot dinners in his life.
But he got an introduction with a difference at the Aussie Rules game the Wolves party were guests at.
He was invited to meet the West Coast Eagles very own furry mascot, Aussie, a wedge-tailed eagle.
After being invited onto the pitch to say a few words about the trip, Gough got a surprise as the eagle flew all around the stadium, before landing safely back on the glove of its handler.
Now usually it’s footballers who are the ones being drooled over, with fans asking to take pictures of them and sign autographs.
But for one Wolves player, the boot was on the other foot last night at the WACA.
Dave Edwards is a big cricket fan, alas he was spotted on the pitch with his camera getting various angles of the stands and huge, iconic floodlight towers after training.
He explained: “I’m taking pictures so I can send one to my dad, Randle.
“He was over here for the last Ashes series when we got beaten 5-0 – he went here and Melbourne – and I wanted to remind him what it looked like.”
