Ince finally signs new Walsall deal

Tuesday 14th July 2009, 11:05AM BST.

clayton-inceWalsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince has handed the Saddlers a massive boost after finally signing his new contract.

The Trinidad and Tobago international who agreed to stay over a month ago, has inked a one-year extension to extend his stay with the Saddlers, who he joined from Coventry in 2006.

Ince, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Monday, was named Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season last year and has revealed his delight at the agreement.

He said: “I’m happy with the news, the manager is happy with the news and hopefully the supporters will be happy too.

“Now the contract is signed everyone can settle down and concentrate on the season ahead.

“From a personal point of view I want to first and foremost maintain the high standards that I set myself last year and then build upon them as the season goes on.”

The delay in signing is because Ince only returned for training last week, following an extended break after Trinidad and Tobago’s World Cup qualifiers.

Boss Chris Hutchings, whose side start their pre-season programme at Rotherham on Saturday, is pleased to have secured the keeper’s services.

He said: “I am delighted that Clayton has committed himself to the club. It means that we now have good competition in the goalkeeping department with Rene Gilmartin working hard during pre-season.

“We will use both players during the pre-season programme of matches.”
