Hutchings tips new boy to shine
Tuesday 14th July 2009, 11:01AM BST.
Walsall boss Chris Hutchings is tipping new signing Josh O’Keefe for a big future after snapping up the midfielder.
The 20-year-old has penned a one-year deal, following his exit from Blackburn Rovers and adds much needed depth to the Saddlers’ engine room.
O’Keefe attracted interest from Championship sides Blackpool and Derby last season, even having a two-month trial at Pride Park, before leaving Ewood Park.
He made 12 appearances for Rovers’ reserves last season, scoring once.
The midfielder follows Mark Hughes and Steve Jones as new arrivals and Hutchings is thrilled to have got his man.
He said: “Josh is a player that we have been monitoring for some time. This is a chance for him to develop and go on to bigger and better things on the first-team stage.”

Looks a good signing to me. But if you think he’s going to be a star Chris, why have we only got him on a 1 year contract????? The mind boggles.

HI ALAN I COMPLETELY AGREE.

if he does well this season and attracts interest from bigger clubs he will be snapped up for next to nothing at that end of the season at least with a 2 year deal we might get a good offer

Exactly what I’m thinking 1. and 2.
We’re having to build virtually a new team every season and have done for 5/6 years now. That give no stability, creates no loyalty and most of all, does nothing to build a relationship between the fans and the players which leads to a dull atmosphere.
We know we’re likely to see different teams season after season.
If the lad is this good, why isn’t he on a 2 or 3 year deal? At a bare minimum, I hope we’ve got a 1 or 2 year option at our discretion, not his.

SO as he is under 24 would we get anything even having him on a 12 month contract? BUT TOTALLY AGREE WHAT IS THE POINT OF A 12 MONTH CONTRACT, why not just call it a season ticket?

Saddler….what you on about? I just bought a new home top with TRIALIST printed on it.

I hear what you all are saying but what if does not settle or he does not perform? its wages we would have to pay for a player of no use to the manager for another year! If he impresses he will be offered a new improved longer contract before the currant one expires. Exactly what happened with Gerrard, then we will go on and sell him for next to nothing.
