Collins put up for sale by Wolves
Tuesday 14th July 2009, 11:18AM BST.
Wolves defender Neill Collins has been put up for sale – with the best possible endorsement from manager Mick McCarthy.
The 25-year-old signed a four-year deal this time last year, but has failed to make the 24-man tour party for Australia.
Collins fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Christophe Berra in January, coupled with the return to form and fitness of Jody Craddock.
Since then, Ronald Zubar has arrived from Marseille and McCarthy still wants to sign another centre-back, with Bobo Balde on trial and Chelsea’s Michael Mancienne a long-term loan target.
But at least Collins will leave with a glowing testimonial from McCarthy.
The manager said: “Neill will move on, just like Jason Shackell and Darren Ward. I want to sell him – Neill doesn’t want to be going out on loan.
“He’s been brilliant for us, but he needs to go and play football.
“There’s nothing in the offing for him to my knowledge, but he’d get into any Championship side. Half of them would make him their captain if he went there.
“I said the same about Rob Edwards and I wasn’t wrong – he went to Blackpool and became their captain. Neill will do the same.
“He has been excellent, but hasn’t been in the team and you just need to change things from time to time.”
Collins has made 81 League appearances for Wolves since making his loan move permanent in January 2007, with a £150,000 switch from Sunderland.
He has scored eight goals, including the winner at Doncaster last season.
But he hasn’t played since scoring the own goal that saw the team lose 1-0 at Reading in January.

Good decision by Mick McCarthy and all the best to Neil Collins.
Good luck if you do leave.
We’re all aware of his limitations, but it never stopped him giving 100%. It was the attitude and not always the ability of players like Neill that gained us promotion.
In Mick we trust!
What about this bloke from Hamilton, is he any good.
Possibily the best piece of news all Summer.
Brilliant move by Mick and the team. Think Collins has been one of those players who will put himself on line in the name of the team, but he is not really good enough for the premiership.
Glad Mick has seen this too and doesn’t seem to be keeping onto players he doesn’t think can do the job in the Prem. He’s obviously determined not to get relegated this time round.
Always gave 100% and a terrific servant to the club. Will be fondly remembered and will grace any Championship team.
would not have been my first choice to sell, has potential and is young…I would have sold Jody craddock
Report abuse
A good decision as he falls well short of what will be required this forthcoming season but, from what I have seen so far, he is no worse than Berra and has scored some crucial goals for us in his time here.
Good for Neil and good for Wolves. Never doubted the lads effort – just not the ability levels needed for the Prem’ (or top 5 of the Champ).
Sure we’ll make a nice profit on him !
Always tried his best when wearing the wolves shirt but made far too many silly errors that were punished by the opposition time and time again. A good threat from corners/setplays and admired his courage but Mick is right by moving the boy on. Wish you luck at your new club and in the future….
Brilliant in the air, too slow on the floor. I reckon that we might struggle to sell any of the surplus centre halves.
I see we have been linked with Knight again at £3 million. In my opinion, he would not be any better than Stearman!
Good luck to him in the future but nowhere near good enough for the Premiership. He used to fill me with panic whenever someone ran towards him. Zele on target again yesterday hopefully he will be playing in Gold and Black in the Premiership in a couple of seasons.
omg mick, how can u say that collins would get into any championship side and become captain? he is useless and i am so glad we r sellin him, he may hav tried his best but he was terrible. I cant see anyone buyin him so we may hav to wait for his contract to run out in 3 years :S personally i think he wud just about make it into a conference team
Report abuse
Nice to see some positive parting comments for neill. He always gave 110% but at times just found himself lacking a little! An integral part of our promotion success none the less and a player who never whinged and moaned when played out of position he just got on with the job to the best of his ability!
Good luck neill wherever your career takes you and thanks for playing your part in wolves history!!!!!
So why did we give him a 4 year contract then when he was clearly not good enough? Stupidity by Mick and Moxey!!
Nice profit? Who on earth is going to pay money this Collins??? Some people on here are completely deluded – probably the same people that think Stephen Ward is a good player!!
Lets hope we can re-coup the money from him. He was never a great defender, very limited in ability and I for one would like to pay for his taxi out of Moli. Harsh but business is business.
Thank you, Neil. You have been a good servant, giving your all when ever called upon. I wish you every success in the future and as with all former Wolves’ players, I will follow your progress by way of the Sunday newspaper football reports.
The correct decision to sell him. He is not going to play in the prem, so why keep him.
Despite his limitations he always gives his all and was unlucky not to get back into the team after the sending off at Reading. That own goal was the direct result Foley being fluffy in the corner and Hen refusing to leave his goal line in the build up. Collins played well that night and I really don’t think Berra is much better than him. But then I am less than convinced Berra will be up for the Prem either !!!!
13–never kick a man when he’s down.
15–get a life & go back to wba, when you get it.
Its the right decision, personally I think he should go to a lower championship or top League 1 side. Would knock an airbus out of the air but lacks the pace to deal with the premiership.
Giving him a 4 year contract was so that we can get a fee for him, im sure there will be interest and I would hope at least we can re-coup the 150k paid for him.
We all know his limitations, and i’ve being one of his biggest critics, but he always gave his all, and scored some vital goals. Was also rock solid alongside stears when we nearly broke our record for consecutive wins at the start of last season.
I reckon he will go on to shine at his level (i.e. the middle to bottom of the CCC) as mick says.
All the best Big Neil.
UTW
Report abuse
Anyone regardless of their ability and potential who helped us out of the championship deserves our thanks and good luck……Not the worst of our defenders though…..Can’t seen premiership strikers worrying about Craddock or Berra and we only hope that players like Zubar are good enough and that Starman Elokobi and the others can step up to the plate. Some good signings potentially but in for a long season defensively unless we sign someone of known quality I think
Report abuse
Gave his best but not good enough.
Would be ideal for a smaller club in the Championship…….interested Baggies?
We all knew it was going to happen!
Just wish it had of been sooner!
for all you saying that he was good enough for the prem, this obviously shows u doesnt it that he wasnt!
Glowing tributes now that the man is leaving, pity it was not the same when he was doing his best to earn an honest living at wolves
Report abuse
He scored 8 goals… but how many penalties did he give away?? At least double that!!
Little confused by the timing of this. Surely, it would have made sense to have put him on the list at the same time as Shackell, Ward etc. but can only assume Mick wanted him as cover had we not been successful signing other centre halves. Hope that readling between the lines, this means we have another centre half lined up (preferably Mancienne rather than Balde, not least as it should be cheaper since Mancienne can share all of McCarthy’s apparrel!)
Good luck Neill. I’m sure that when we have a corner with 5 minutes to go and we are looking for an equaliser/winner, a number of fans will be wishing that you were still with us.
On another note, is this a sign that McCarthy is maturing as a manager? He clearly has a soft spot for Collins having signed him from Falkirk (I believe) when he was at Sunderland and then obviously signing him for us. But he also knows that he isn’t ever going to be good enough for the top flight and should we get relegated, we have better depth now for the
Championship. I hope so.
Neill I’m proud to have supported you as a Wolves player and after years of watching players who couldnt care less about playing for this club you were exactly the type of player we needed. Thank god we’ve got Mick and Jez at the helm of this club and not cretins like ‘Bob Wolf’ who come on these pages and display their ignorance for all to see. Good luck Neill wherever you end up.
Some of the comments show very little understanding of the way football works. It is because he was given a new contract that we can get a fee for him, ( he could have gone free in the summer) plus the longer the contract the larger the fee you can ask. Neil has never cheated the fans he has always played to the best of his ability, and given 100%. How many games has he won in the closing stages with a brave header. Good luck to him, and WolvesMod should go back to the WBA(we are bottom again)site and talk about his own team. What a sad life he must lead with such a negative attitude, it must have been a very sad day for him and the other moaners when MM won the championship last May in spite of them
Report abuse
I’m not a Collins fan, far from it. I’m glad he’s leaving because he’s not good enough.
But in some ways, a part of me is glad he was given a 4 year contract. Has football always got to be about profit?
I wish him well.
Think of all the late goals his scored with his head, His one of the reasons we won some of the games!
I think we’ll see Collins playing in the championship next year and good luck to him, as many have said, he gave 100% but that just won’t be enough this season.
13 – He’s a better footballer than you are a speller! does teacher know you’re on the internet?
15 Bob, If we’d not put him on a contract and waved him goodbye on a free would that have been good business? NO! but as it stands we might get a few hundred grand in the bank – seems like damn good business to me
Report abuse
Good look Neil always gave 100% but as we all know he had his moments but scored some really important goals. I dont rate him any less than Berra and think Stearman is a lot better and can play a bit as we saw with his runs. I still don’t think we need anyone else in central defence, still like that premiership midfielder with experience. Like i said well done Neil i would clap him if he returned.
Would get in the tescos team no problem
We still need 3 players in my opinion
bale – spurs
mancieene – chelsea
viduka – newcastle
all on loans?

Why do you always sound so bitter on here? Is it because you can’t afford a season ticket or something?

Brilliant news, awful awful player lets hope Steven Ward will follow.
Just 1 question though why was he given a 4 year contract.
Two seasons to late the bloke is a rubbish footballer.
good luck neil where ever you go. just 1 more thing please stop tim nash doing reports on videos all it is is errrr ummmm does my head in.
15. Bob Wolf. Collins may not have set the world light but put the effort in & I’d rather have people like him in the squad than shirkers like Bothroyd or Eastwood. He was a decent suad member but the Championship was his limit. Maybe we can offer him(or D Ward or Shackell) as part of a deal for Fox, Lallana or McCarthy. As for the 4 year contract, tat virtually guarantees that we will make a profit on him, so good move by th 3Ms.
I dont care what people say collins did us a job….good luck mate all the best and thanks for the goals!!!!
32 – its called abreviations!
Collins may of scored vital goals but he conceded so many penalties, and scored own goals and every time he played he was a burden, it was like playing with 10 men. But good luck to him
Report abuse
Sad to see some of the comments. He was part of a squad that got us promotion after all, and I’m sure would be first to admit to some of his limitations…I wonder if some of the people who post comments would be so honest. On an allied topic…far rather Mancienne on loan than Balde…or buying Zat Knight for that matter.
Woo hoo!
Does this mean Mr Collins has been dumped by Miss McCarthy.
25, bill coventry. Agree totally.
Even though, as i said, i was one of Collins’ biggest critics, i never get on a wolves player’s back during a game.
I doubt the people who have thanked him for efforts on here are “boo boys” either, as these morons don’t have enough about them to do that (See post 13).

Loyal-Cannock-Wolf…
Coming from Cannock I am surprised that you can afford a computer to be on here!!
Good luck Neil and thanks for the commitment and professionalism you have given to Wolves.Never whingeing when played out of position and never sulking when out of the team, just giving 100% and playing to the best of your ability.

This is wolves problem at moment we have 2 much dead wood, it’s not just collins that need’s 2 go the are a number of player’s that need 2 be shown the exit door. Don’t mean 2 cum across 2 harsh but this is so very true.

I dont get on players backs, but i dont cheer when they give away loads of penalties either
Report abuse
I think all wolves fans could see he gave his all and tried his best but we knew his ability is limited,at least he wasn’t like so many that didn’t care and just turned up for the money, good luck wherever you go and i think we should say thank you for his contibution even tho he gave us so many hart attacks with his defending at times, thank you and goodbye.
At least he can put on his CV “The only player dangerous in both areas”!!!
wanderers penn. Sorry, didn’t see comment 42.
I don’t cheer when penalties are given away either, and like i’ve said, i was one of the biggest critics of Neil’s ability. Its just that as a supporter i prefer to get behind any player wearing that gold and black shirt as i think it might give us a better chance of being successful than jumping on a players back whenever an inadvertant mistake is made.

Out of order slating the guy now , the right decision for club & himself has been made .
If you think of a lot of players over the last 15 years who have been at the club & just couldnt give a toss , at least he always gave 100% in the shirt but fell short of the levels of consistency needed .
Best of luck to you in future .

Time for a reality check methinks:
1) You don’t buy a defender to score goals – although it is always a bonus if they can put the ball in the net. If you’re a poor defender, you’re a poor defender irrespective of however many late goals you contribute.
2) Any professional footballer should work their guts off for the team so the fact that Collins always gave 100% and didn’t complain is irrelevant. The fact that others whinge says more about them than it shows up Collins for being virtuous.
3) Most objective fans never rated his defending. He was accident prone and lacked pace.
4) Those of you who think it was a stroke of genius putting him on a 4 year contract for re-sale purpose forget that his salary would have been improved as a result which compares strangely with players of arguably greater ability who have never been given the same level of chances or contract…Jones, Gobern and Little – to name but 3.
5) I think close season deals have been excellent but the spirit of pre-season euphoria shouldn’t blind us to the reality that MM grossly misjudged his ability and this announcement is an endorsement of that. I wish the lad well – as do many others – but I’ll save my tears for those who never had a chance when they deserved it rather than one who has lived off misjudged generosity for the last year.
we should sell Craddock aswell, there is no room for sentiment in the premiership,no pace
Report abuse
62) Your point is? Zat Knight is a donkey that believe it or not has a full England cap. Anyway it looks like he is going to Bolton for £3.5 million.
People on here have mentioned Viduka??? Lazy, overweight = not ideal for our team and the young work ethic.
People are constantly commenting on here about our Championship players. They are missing a big point here in that most are full internationals and have therefore faced some quality opposition eg Hennessey, Edwards and Vokes have played v Germany etc.

Good luck to the lad, he will do a job for someone in the Championship or League 1.
He came in when at the start of the 06/07 season we were looking at going down not a place in the the play offs and the lad like the other 100k or so players that were brought in, done a good job for the club.

all the best 2 neill sorry 2 c him go

Thanks Neil Goog luck else where
Now for the negative people on here
as brummie wolf says our squad may not include premier experience but as with the stearman signing last season has got experience
Hannahman (prem)
Foley (int)
Sterman (int)
Craddock (prem)
Berra (int)
Jones (prem)
Kightly (int)
Seb (int)
Keogh (int)
vokes (int)
Hennerssey (int)
Edwards (int)
Iwellumo (int)
ward (int)
so lets just get behind them they have experience just not in the prem and the only way to gain that is to play there (the season may be hard ) but if we can stay up then we will have learned as a group of players as a club and set of fans and more importantly as a collective family unit Wolves is ours lets all stick together
COME ON YOU WOLVES

It is a business.McCarthy and Co have a lot on their shoulders.Prem is very tough on Wannabees.
Wolves have to adjust to a much higher level of play now.
Good luck to Collins. The leagues are made up of a lot of players like him and we enjoy watching them week after week. Thanks Neil.

A great bit of busienss last season, giving him a 4 year contract has enabled us to sell at a profit.
Superb business yet again.

i like Neil Collins.
Under-valued by the fans, and his mistakes got much worse when the moaning whingers got on his back. Who wouldnt show a bit of nerves under those circumstances.

Good luck Neil. Thanks for your effort and commitment.

“But in some ways, a part of me is glad he was given a 4 year contract. Has football always got to be about profit?”
You are kidding right? What about the dozens of footballers given free transfers at the moment? Well, lets all feel for them and sign them on.
Mick has made very few mistakes, but giving Collins a 4-year contract was undoubtly one of them. The only reason he did so was because the fans was on his(Collins) back and stubborn Mick wanted to show who was in charge.
15 – Bob Wolf
I see you used this story to have another pop at Stephen Ward. I’d rather have him and Collins start every game next year than have you at every game.
Go and find a team that wants you. Plenty of room for you at the Hawthornes which is where I suspect you watch most of your football anyway.
In Mick we trust!

Wasn’t a bad player, scored some crucial goals. It’s players like him, Steven Ward and Richard Stearman who were crucial in our promotion so I wish him well.
67. Well ‘stubborn’ Mick is now telling us that he is not good enough for the prem and we will recieve a fee. If I was the manager of most of the championship sides I would take him, we highlight his mistakes but I remember away at sheff Utd last season he was absolutely superb.
I am very confident of us staying up, we have added undoubted quality to our squad. Bring Nolan in as club Captain. Joe Ledley and Michael Mancienne will do nicely.
67 – well said. Totally agree with you.
Mick has made some excellent signings – Jarvis, Kightly, Ebanks-Blake to name some. Collins was a mistake, and should move on the a bottom club in the Championship or a League One club.
Talking about profit. Mick bought Collins in 2004 when in charge of Sunderland, then paying Dumbarton £25,000.
3 years later, having played 18(!) league games for Sunderland, Mick buys him again, this time paying £150,000 for him. To this day, I am wondering, how on earth he managed to play so well in those 18 games, that his value grew so much.

One down, now just Keogh to dump and then we will start to look like a serious team.
What ever happened to the 20 goals he promised that he’d score at the start of last season?
Seriously, we still need a hard, fast central midfielder, a General like Billy Wright or Mike Bailey. Certainly somebody of that style to keep the young lads heads up when we get some drubbings next season. It is sure to happen, and we need to learn how to handle it and overcome.
Norway Wolf – dont be such a bufoon.

I reckon Derby will sign Barker the Blackpool centre half and then Blackpool will sign Collins to partner Edwards once again. They made a reasonable partnership at times for us at Championship level.
101- Hang on just a minute. Just Keogh to dump WTF? Ok maybe he is not the most prolific of strikers, but one thing I’m sure of is this. I would rather have a guy like him in the prem who WILL create chances for others due to the problems he will cause defences cos the guy will run himself into the ground for the cause, and has done so on many occasions last season if you recall. He is still young yet and I’m sure given a run in the side will do the business. Anyone remember Derby away? Just imagine a player like him coming off the bench to terrorise an already worn out defence late in a match or would you prefer a lazy player like Viduka? I wouldn’t.
I don’t know if any players read these comments or not but if they do, Is it going to improve their confidence for the season ahead. I THINK NOT!

What you need to look at is, what players from our team that went up, would other prem teams want to sign, maybe 3 possible 4, just because some of us do not agree with everything that MM and the others do and say, does not make us any less suppoter than them who bow and pray to everything they are told by MM and others.

112, spot on, Bob Wolf yur opinions are about as welcome as an STD in a brothel.
The hostility felt towards one of our own players is shocking, this lad, who lets face it always knew deep down that he wasn’t good enough for the Prem, gave his absolute all to the cause last season. And I don’t care what anybody has to say, he was brilliant in the air, just a bit clumsy on the deck, and mistake prone.
As for comments about why he was given chances above other players, Jones – we had cover his position, Gobern, I think you’ll find he was injured, Little – would you of dropped Foley last year then?
But why do people have to lambast the lad for this, even when he’s on the way out. I think its because there’s a section of very bitter support who can only express happiness in others failings.

112 Agree entirely. He is a Tesco (WB=West Bromwich) Even his Inglish gives him away.

Thanks for the service you gave, Neil -even though it was a mixed bag, if truth be told. Best wishes for the future because we know you gave 100%, if nothing else.
Question is, how is it that Mick’s suddenly bright enough to see Neil’s obvious limitations, yet, just a year ago, Collins was awarded a huge, 4 year contract? Did Mick REALLY think Collins was good enough to warrant it? Daftest decision in years, I’d say, considering the bloke’s a bit of a liability.
If Wolves merely recoup what they paid, that’s a result.
