Iwelumo faces fitness battle

Saturday 11th July 2009, 11:05AM BST.

perth71Wolves could be without striker Chris Iwelumo for up to three months, manager Mick McCarthy has revealed.

The Scotland international striker broke a metatarsal in last night’s 1-0 win against Perth Glory in Australia as the club’s tour got off to the worst possible start.

Iwelumo, who was playing his first game since injuring his medial knee ligaments against Birmingham on April 6, had the news confirmed after x-rays. “He’s broken his metatarsal. I don’t know whether it will be six, eight or 12 weeks, some heal quicker than others,” said McCarthy.

“I’m hugely disappointed, for Chris more than anything. Chris has played all his career in the lower leagues and worked his socks off to get this opportunity of the Premier League and then he breaks his toe.”

Iwelumo becomes the third Wolves player in 11 months to suffer a fracture to the foot after Jody Craddock last August and Michael Kightly in March.

Craddock took 15 weeks to regain full fitness after complications set in, while Kightly hasn’t played yet as he is still easing his way back to full fitness. Iwelumo probably won’t now be fit until October.

“It’s hugely disappointing for me as well because I’ve lost a player for a number of weeks,” added McCarthy.

McCarthy exonerated former Leeds midfielder Jacob Burns, whose clash with Iwelumo caused the injury. “It wasn’t a physical game – it was an accidental clash,” said the boss. “The game was fine – there was no badness in it at all.”

Midfielder Dave Jones also missed the game after coming off early during training earlier in the day with tendonitis to the knee.

McCarthy gave debuts to new signings Kevin Doyle, Nenad Milijas, Marcus Hahnemann, Andrew Surman, Greg Halford and Ronald Zubar, with Surman catching the eye.

But he was far from happy with the performance as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scored the only goal in the second minute.

“We were hopeless. I hate pre-season,” said McCarthy.

ah Mick you do make me smile with your comments from time to time. I hope big Chris will be back asap, as although i think Sylvan and Doyle will be our main two, Iwelumo can come on a get the odd goal.
Still think we need Mancienne and another striker, someone like Ashton or Bent.
Come on Mick, another big two signings will give us a real chance!!!

I love Mick McCarthy. His personality suits wolves down to the ground. He is the common man, like every wolves fan. Doesnt give non-sensical interviews, powder-puff comments. He’s honest, down to earth and FUNNY. Lets stick behind him all the way this season. We owe him that and we have to be ever so thankful to him and for him everday this season.

Never been as excited and optimistic as a wolves fan before. Mick truely is a magician.

And the reason for that: He simply isnt better.

I like Big Chris. He seems like a good guy, and he did score some good goals last year. But he is nowhere near good enough for Premiership football.
I wish him a speedy recovery, then hope he will be soon be on his way out.

I am sorry, but there really is no room for sympathy in the Premiership.

I was at the game and must say that PG gave them a hard time! Wolves still have a lot to do before the season kicks off. There was too much kicking the ball into nowhere, almost like a panic reaction. They need more composer…it will come as the team gels. Keogh was dynamite…he is gonna do well in the EPL!!! It will be interesting to watch how Fulhum come off against PG on Wednesday – they have already lost to new boys Goldcoast United! Wolves have got Queensland Fury just before Fulham come on – 4 hrs of football back to back…wooohoo..

Speedy recovery hoped for with Chris, as although not a gifted player, would be great to bring on last 15 minutes to put himself about in the box and perhaps get on end of some long throw ins from Halford!!

Shame about big Chris, he must be truly gutted, didn’t even got to kick a ball in the Premier and he picks up an injury, chin up mate, get yourself back as quick as possible.
As for the result of the game, as we all know the results in pre-season never give a true indication of how a team is going to perform when the games really count, at least the new signing are getting a chance to integrate into the team, we won, but as Mick said it was not a good performance, im sure the lads will be up for it when it counts when the Prem kicks off.

17,.Grace 12 is entitled to his opinion just as you are,Whether or not big chris will be good enough for the prem time will tell.Agree with most posts on here a good quality striker is needed to have a squad big enough to compete and cover for injuries(as we have already found out).Although we have signed some potentially good players we still have to acquire 1or2 established premiership quality imv.

How many forwards do you want??

    Doyle
    SEB
    Illewemo
    Keogh
    Vokes

If you look a little further we also hae Ward & Halford who have both played up front, then we have a couple of young lads, junior pro’s. Elliott, I think is one who come on against Barnsley.

So I think we have alot of cover up there, the other thing is that we don’t want to blow our budget in August we may need to invest in January.

Perhaps time to bring in another forward to cover Lumes enforced absence – we possibly needed another face in this position anyway, damn shame we didn’t move a bit quicker for Fraizer Campbell.
As regards Leko as well as not being young he is not particualrly hungry either, demanding £30k a week – who does he think he is? McCarthy from the Accies makes much more sense.
Also why do we need Zat Knight? With Mancienne coming at least on loan, Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Craddock, possibly Balde if he cuts the mustard. Someone like Matt Mills would be money better spent than Knight and he would be hungrier you would have thought and probably demand less wages and has more long term potential than Knight.

    17) Oh dear oh dear! Well after Perth Glory I suppose our next leg of the Oz Tour is in Auckland (lol).

I’m not questioning his commitment. Its second-to-none. However, I am stating the obvious – That he is not good enough for Premiership football. Thats my opinion, and hasnt got anything to do with not appreciating his contribution last season.

I am afraid that we say – Oh well, lets give the likes of Hill, Ward, Iwelumo and Craddock a chance. After all, they did help us get promoted. Then come January, having realized they werent up for it, what are we to do then?

went to the training sessions in perth – doyle very rusty, blake only okay, iwelumo was the best but still only ordinary, keogh not impressive. Of the new signings only Surman looked decent. Haneman looked MUCH better in goal than Hennessey. Zubar, Milijas, Balde – forget it, they are not any better than what we already have. Halford looks a decent signing but nothing special. McCarthy is going to have to shrpen this lot up a great deal and make sure he gets his tactics right. Tough season ahead but the team spirit is strong and they appear a committed bunch. Oh yeah Elokobi looked completely out of touch and Ward was relaible which isn’t saying much about the others.

Hard to see who the starting 11 are going to be, other than Keogh the others including all the new signings were as bad as each other. You havnt got a sponsor, all your players want out and you have took a cheap option manager after being turned down by your first 2 choices.

I would like to see us go in for a big target man now Looms is injured. I think a cheeky bid for Kevin Davies? We are still lacking a no nonsense centre half and a strong tackling midfielder. Mancienne would also be a good addition.

Well I guess I already mentioned in these forums that I thought we would need another Striker to cover injuries and we have one already before the season has started.

I know we have numerous strikers on the books, but still feet we need another QUALITY STRIKER for cover for the front two. We need goals in the team from all positions, but especially from coming off the bench and to cover injuries.

I still think we need wing cover and should be looking at experience and DUFF with Ledley in the middle as well.. I think NM will turn out to be an excellent signing and SEB and Doyle need to play at least 10 together to get a partnership going. Just hope neither gets injured!!! :-)
